For my next firearm I'm looking around at smallbore rifles to shoot some paper and maybe some varmints here in Kansas.

I also just wanted to say 'hi' as this is my first post. There are some really interesting threads on here.

Side note: I just convinced my grandmother to let me dust off my late grandfather's rifles and put them to a little use, keeping them in the family, of course, and making sure they stay in decent shape. I haven't seen them since 2004, but I know that he took good care of them. I know, however, come Thanksgiving she's bringing me two Winchesters; a .243 and a .223. Both are good for this purpose, especially the latter (economically), but I was just curious to know what everyones' favorite long-ish range target rifles were.

P.S. She's also bringing a Belgian Browning Auto 5, a Marlin .444 Lever-Action, and a Ruger Redhawk. I love that sweet old woman...

Hi to you to. I would get a 270. It is a good range flat shooting gun. I live in Montana and hunt for Elk. It is a good gun with take down power.

Start with your Grandads guns

The 223 and the 243 are both capable of great accuracy well beyond 100 yards. I am assuming that the rifles you speak of are most likely model 70 bolt actions. If the are pre 64 guns and in very good condition you may want to keep them as collectors rather than shooters. If I were to recomend a rifle/caiber for your purposes I would go with the 223 or the 204 in a Savage 12 BVSS or the VLP. Both calibers are extremely accurate out of the right gun and the Savage model 12 is the right gun.

Try this

Have you ever thought about a Swedish mauser? The 6.5x55 round is flat and fast. The bullet diameter is .264 and the recoil feels like a .243.

Favorite 100 yd target rifle

I had a Savage 10FP 223 and still have a CZ 527 Kevlar 223. The CZ would shoot just as good as, and sometimes a little better than, the 10FP and it was lighter also. The 527's target barrel tapers to 3/4 in. at the muzzle.

The 527 Kevlar has a 1 in 9 twist and the 527 Laminated has a 1 in 12 twist. If you plan to shoot 55 or less grain bullets you might check into the laminated version.

No doubt. My favorite target rifle is my 20" barreled AR-15. Although I'm really starting to like my Swiss K31 when I feel like shooting with a scope.

Both excellent choices, I have an AR-15 with a custom upper by Accuracy Speaks, 22" heavy barrel,A-3 Reciever, Weaver rail gas block. Barrel free floated under handguards. It's better than I am. K-31's are great, I got several while price was very good so I could play with different sighting options.I have not tried the scope yet, just waiting for weather to cool off a bit down here.

My favorite for open sights is a Swiss mod 1911, the long rifle. I feel the extra barrel length( not much more than a K-31) but a much longer sighting radius makes for very accurate shooting, for me probably as good as the K-31 with diopter sights.

for a Target gun, I would not pick 270. There isn't a very good selection of match grade, high BC bullets. 6mm, 6.5 and 30 cal are you friends.

If you want to go long, I'd pick 260 Remington. This round is a rising star in tactical matches for good reason. It fits in a short action (unlike 6.5x55) and there is factory loaded match ammo available from Black Hills. Most Swedes don't have a fast enough twist to stabilize the really high BC long range bullets. In addition, the Swede tends to be offered in hunting configurations, rather than target guns.

For twist, you want 1:8 or 1:8.5. Shooting a high BC bullet like those from JLK, Berger or Lapua, the 260 beats the 308 at 1000 yards and beyond. Another option if you want to go custom is 6.5x47 Lapua. Similar to the 260 with a shorter case accomodating longer bullet.

Swiss K11 with st marie scope mount and 35 year old 3x leupold M-8 scope, I just love messin with the Remchesterby guys shootin their $1500 toys handloading at the bench then Some guy shows up and starts matchin em shot per shot with an old milsurp draggin rounds outa a white GP11 box preloaded :D

+1 to what DMK said. But I guess it depends how much farther past 100 meters you want to go. The K31 is an all around great rifle, although ammo is what's going to get ya with that choice. Something for distances around 300 to 400 meters I'd say go with an AR, plus you can build it yourself and have a lot of fun doing it. But I think it all comes down to how far out are you looking to shoot on a regular basis?

Now there is an excellent rifle. Derrick really knows his stuff.

I agree that an AR is a great target rifle, well beyond 100m.

Welll... You are probably going to love both of Granma's guns. ;)

My own personal favorite at the moment is my 6MM Rem. (Rem. 700 VLS)

Why?
Because it will shoot a ragged hole, when I do my part.

Next is my .22-250 (Rem 788)....But, 200 yds is about max that I shoot it.

Thanks for the helpful replies! I'll get to researching your suggestions.

The .243 is in fact pre-1964. Exactly what year, I do not know. I'm waiting for my dad to e-mail me serial numbers. I may ask for some help figuring out its value once I get the details.

I really would love to build an AR, although I'm not sure how far into the rifle's evolution my funds could get me before the next election. Simply speculating however, I could still at least buy parts regardless of what happens?
