Your pick for a single stack 9mm that is NOT a 1911 design

I found out, for the both of us :)p):

At first glance it looks as if the 952 is now equipped with a grip safety, for the back-strap is movable, where the 52's is not.

But it isn't a grip safety, it's a firing pin safety that depends on the grip rather than some connection with the trigger. This is a descendent of the 1930s Swartz firing pin safety once found on Colt Government Models and now seen on Kimber's Series II pistols, or S&W's latest 945. It is a better design and has no harmful effect on the trigger pull, which is a creep-free 4 pounds.

So it is a grip safety, just not in the conventional 1911 sense.

S&W Model 59. I say if it is good enough for Col. Hannibal Smith, then it is good enough for all of us!

59 is double-stack.

On that note, my top pick for a single-stack 9mm would be a S&W 952. They're spendy, though. A more budget-minded pick would be the S&W 639.

Actually, since in the first season, Hannibal/George Peppard said "You've got an eight shot Smith and Wesson aimed at you under the table" I'm pretty positive Hannibal's plans came together with a Model 39.

Also, Robert Culp as Bill Maxwell had a Model 39 for the first season of Greatest American Hero, then he went to a 9mm Commander like the Cos had back on I Spy.

The 952 "grip safety" is not as noticeable as the 1911. It only comes with the curved backstrap. The safety is not as nice for me as the 1911. I'm not used to it and the underside is sharp so it hurts my thumb to disengage. Probably will do a bit of work on it this winter.

That's my 9mm Les Baer on the far side.

NON-1911's;
Walther P38/P1
Walther P38k/P4/P5/P5c
Beretta 951/Helwan
Luger P08
Lahti
S&W 39/639/3906/3913
SIG P210/P220/P225/P239
HK P7PSP/P7M8
I'm sure there are others, that what I can think of right now.

I like the Kahr K9, but carried a S&W 439 for a couple of years and like that a lot. The comparable model would be a 908 or 3913. You might also consider the Ruger SR9--it is AS THIN as a 1911 with thin grips--seriously!

Easy choice: A Walther P5. It's the ultimate extension of the P.38/P1 design and a shooter's delight. It's still my favorite take-to-the-range gun.
