your "workhorse" rifle

My workhorse gun is a Winchester Mod. 1300 20 gauge pump shotgun I paid $200 for it new with a rather nice wood stock on it(wal-fart),I've found 20 gauge slugs in a smooth bore barrel to shoot better than any 12 gauge and since I can't hunt dear with a rifle here, I threw some tru glo sights on the smooth bore slug barrel and one of those $5 slip on shell holders on the stock(keeps the stinging cold stock off my cheek:)), it's my go to gun for pretty much anything around here, I also have the barrel with screw in chokes for it and it does the job for pheasant and stuff. I almost never use my expensive shotgun for hunting.

sept black bear season, then I use my M7 youth in 7mm-08, it was my first rifle, it's got a Nikon 3-9x40 on it, and the same type of cheapo stretchy fabric ammo holder on the stock, and a cheap black nylon sling, it shoots straight and is a joy to carry around, nice and light, I did refinish the stock though, the cheap factory finish got a little too beat up.

Mine is a 1979 Ruger M77 .243 soon to be HEAVILY modified and will be come my long range "tacticle" rifle, when the project starts I will start up a thread.

Grampa bought his Rem 721(.270 WIN) new in a hardware store that no longer stands in a town that is now "unincorporated" in 1958, IIRC. He killed Mulies, Pronghorn, Elk, even a couple of whitetail with it......... He gave it to me just before he died in '96. The times have changed, hell even the land has changed. Mulies are scarce and you can't swing a cat without scratchin' a Whitetail.......... that rifle still fills the freezer.

This is my Remington model 660 in .308 that's been my main elk rifle for many decades. The .308 cartridge shoots as deadly as 30-06 but with less recoil in a much shorter package. It shoots very tight groups with plain factory ammo.

when I started out, I rallied more toward 12 ga sluggers, but got a Marlin 336 in .30-30 that was liquidated to help pay for a reloaction; I got another lever action, but I went with a Marlin 1894C in .357 mag to match with my Ruger GP100 (wish that I had got another Marlin 336 for more vesatility); current bolt gun is a Savage 111G in .25-06 which was intended for groundhog plunking in spring '08, but didn't get a chance to work up loads, so I used for deer season '07

dad's always relied on a Remington Gamemaster in .30-06 that I has reworked a bit earlier this year since it was going to be my primary deer rifle; he moved in with me and reclaimed it as his own for deer season '07;

I like the Marlin 1894 since it is fun and easy to shoot, but I miss the versatility and light recoil of .30-30; I'm not sure what will be my primary beater rifle...the .25-06 is nice, but not as versatile and easy to lug as a good, solid lever action

Guess mine is my 1896 Sweed , killed 2 deer with it this year. First was a 13 year old's first , took him to my top of the ridge treestand and after 10 waklked I let him shoot one. Killed it good he did, right through the lungs and top of the heart.

2nd was killed by yours truly , Lower Tree stand day after Thanksgiving. First one poked the bones through the brush . Biggest one I have got so far.8 point almost perfet on both sides. Having it mounted now. The Sweed has a factory barrel cut to 17 inches Timney trigger Bell Carson stock , Scope is a 3.5 to 10 x 44 . This old rifle shot the day before the deer kill at 100 yds put the first about 3/8 inch center on a 1/2 inch black dot , the second almost exactly center of the dot. That is good enough for me.

Others of honorable mention are the Rem 70 vssf in Choat ult varmint, Timney trigger 8-32 Burris .

Savage 112 with 3 barrels , 25-06 .222 and 22-250 .250 tight neck 1/9 twist Pac- Nor , Rifle basix 2 trigger at 5 oz Custom bench stock with 4 inch wide forearm and flat bottom to ride the bags well. Bedded and stiffened Factory tupperware stock FOR USE WHEN HUNTING.

Ruger 77 With Bell and Carson bedded stock in 30 -06 , still under construction.

T C Contender with super 16 30-30 , 14 inch .222 14 inch 45-70 and 10 inch .22 rf.

My first deer rifle 30-30 Win 94 cLASSIC , HAVE SEVERAL MORE IN THE OLD SAFE BUT THESE ARE MY FAV'S

Took my .308 Remington M7 to the range today to shoot. I put five rounds into 3/4" at 100 yards. That's the best group I've ever shot with it, usually a 1" gun at 100 yards. I do handload for it, but it's a very accurate gun and inherently accurate round. It's also a very handy little rifle.

Rem 788

My workhorse rifle is my Remington 788 carbine in .308 Win. I bought it new at a gunshow in 1982 for $112 and the dealer threw in a box of 180 gn Winchester Silvertips. With its 2-7x32 Leupold compact scope and Ramline stock, its easy to carry and doesn't get snagged on every clump of brush. 1-1/4" 5-shot groups are the norm with 165 gn Hornady SST's.
Lets the air out of deer real quick.
