I am not a big fan of "What is" threads....but in looking at them, and I am watching software do all the work this morning....why not.

Now I am not talking about that 45acp luger...What is in your budget....or just a tick out of it that you are going....I have always wanted one of those. Thinking...well the wife will be mad and I will sleep on the couch...but I will have an X.

Myself, I would love an MP40, that is at the upper limit of what I would do for a toy.

In more "normal" area I would love a good Ross, after that I start to get into the odd WWI rifles,

So what is that rifle or hand gun that if you saw somewhere for a price you could really afford what is that item..

Well then by definition, your question is not about "Grail guns". The Grail was an impossible, or near impossible quest. And it just so happens that a .45 ACP Luger is one of my Grail guns. So I'l answer your questions as should be asked:

What are some of the guns I'd buy if I came into enough of a windfall to cover all my debts and have actual expendable income?

Garand or Sharps

Yup,both of those, and I'll expand the second to include a Sharps-Borchardt.

An M1907 Mosin Nagant.

A Kreighhoff 3200. A Remington 3200 would suffice.

A minty Collt M1917, and a more used one for the range.

A Verling in 16x16 over 9.2x74R, with a .22 Hornet in the rib.

And a host of others, but these top the list.

I would like to acquire an excellent-condition G/K43 ... for no more than I spent on my 1969 MGB in 1973 ($1500).

Yeah, I know, not gonna happen ... I missed the boat on those prices. :(

I have even tried to find/entice someone with a surfeit of G/K43s who is interested in one of my (2 of 6) close-to-mint SVT-40s ... no luck.

For me a Grail Gun is exactly as the OP described. Not a .45ACP Luger or Colt SAA serial number 1 but something that is actually attainable. IMHO, an impossible goal is not a goal at all. One of mine came in last fall.

I have been fortunate and blessed. I don't have anything out there that I have a burning desire to obtain right now. Got most everything I thought I ever wanted, and some I didn't know I did.

Now I am at the point where I am buying "Everybody ought to own" kind of stuff. This is how/why I got a budget AR and is likely to move me to get a Shield in 9mm soon. Other candidates down the road could include a 10/22 and a 1911.

Fantasy grail gun: a McKay Brown trigger plate Round Action 20 ga 28" IC/IM

Economically viable grail gun: A Kimber Valier 20 ga 28" IC/IM, or its AKAS/Dickinson equivalent

Stainless 1911 Commander-type. Probably will have one, such as the Ruger, before the end of the year. Maybe even this summer; prices are pretty good now.

M1 Garand (only a recent desire, but probably won't fade anytime soon.)

Mosin-Nagant M44.

Nagant 1895 revolver.

Quality stainless SAA-type revolver in .357.

Walther TPH pistol in .22LR. Can't explain this one. Not gonna try.

Well for some years I'd been looking for a Winchester 94 carbine in 32 Special. It was the first rifle that I'd been allowed to deer hunt with alone but belonged to a much older cousin so I had to return it when, unsuccessfully, done that season. I did find one a few years ago, a flat band version, and have taken it hunting with the continued "success" of it's predecessor. :(
I suppose I am still looking for a butter knife bolt handled Mauser carbine in 7x57 with a mannlicher stock but at my age it's not that big a deal anymore ...

I am a fan of matching pairs of guns in .22 rimfire and centerfire,,,
One example of the eleven I own is a S&W Model 15/18 pair.

My grail gun is a S&W Model 45,,,
That's basically a Model 10 chambered for .22 LR.

Here's a picture of one,,,

Back in 2009 I passed on a chance to buy one for $1,100 cash money,,,
I've been kicking my butt for that decision ever since.

I owned one and it was totally awesome. Anytime I brought it out to shoot, everyone loved it, and I loved it, too. It was in decent shape, but I ended up selling it because I was afraid something would break on it and I'd have a cheap paperweight if I couldn't get the part. I even had the original box and test target.

I'd also bought a couple of brand new mags from Walther and kept one still sealed. I sold it for $80 years later because Walther no longer made them.

I am fortunate enough to have acquired one of my Grail guns, seen in my avatar. Grail gun part deux would be one of the CZ75 compact models.

Winchester 1892 32-20 in fine condition. My father has two in Australia - they're mine one day, but to bring them stateside would cost as much as just buying one here.

Importing them isn't the issue - it's exporting them from Australia where the costs are.

A Mark I Springfield complete with Pedersen Device. Or rather, a Pedersen Device complete with Mark I Springfield.

I once had a Mark I Springfield retrofitted with the special parts to take the Device. Around that time, I had a chance to buy the Device itself for $5,000. That was too much money for me in those days. I passed on the offer, and later sold the Mark I.

I would buy one now for $25,000, if I could find one. That's about what a Thompson SMG would go for, and the Device would have less red tape and paperwork.

M1 Carbine.

It doesn't have to be a government issue one, I be happy with a Universal in good condition. It's just that after buying each of my sons an AR last year, it's really tough to spend hundreds of dollars more for a gun that sold for $89 when it was new.
