For those of you in the know, or have already submitted your packet, for the surplus 1911s coming out of CMP soon...

In regards to the FFL portion...did you get a physical photocopy of your FFL's license and submit it with your packet, or did your FFL fax it to CMP? If they faxed it, how did they make sure it was connected to your application (as opposed to others)?

I'm hesitant to ask an FFL for a copy of his license, but also feel like a faxed copy will just get lost, and not having the physical copy with my packet will just make it incomplete and cause it to be rejected.

There aren’t many FFLs who will give a copy of their FFL to anyone other than another FFL.

The CMP website says they confirm via email to the sending FFL that the copy was received. Or the sender will get the fax confirmation.

I wouldn’t use an ffl that wouldn’t give me a copy of his. Too big of pain to get them to send it every time. Many now post it on their website.

The ATF has advised FFL holders not to give a copy to anyone but another FFL. It’s been that way for a few years I think.

That is how the shop I use is. They have it on their website I have their license on my computer. They do a ton of transfers and it makes life easy for them.

Yeah. I haven't found anyone up here yet who does that, but I'm not done looking, either.

BTW, I like your avatar image; been wanting one for many years now.

I have known my FFL holder for over 30 years. You bet I have a copy of his FFL on my computer. I don't even have to tell him when I use it. He holds the packages for me until I come and get them. In the business world its all about relationships.

I have the FFL’s I use on in my phone and just have them email me the new one when the old ones expire.

Shouldn’t be a big deal at all.

I get that, but I don't have a relationship with small, LGS FFLs. I don't generally buy many guns anymore, but when I do (2 in the last year, and none the 20 years prior to that), I usually just go to a box store. I don't like to buy online, and the price of used guns has gotten such that they're no longer a value or bargain. I don't even bother to go to gun shows anymore. At least, that holds true in the places I've lived.

I have a copy of my dealer's license in PDF format on my computer. I just call or email him every time I send it to someone just to make sure he's OK with that. Never a problem.

Time is money for an FFL. They don't do anything that isn't required by ATF if they don't have to. At least the ones that do a lot of transfers don't.

Yea used guns are generally not a good deal. Too many folks think they are buying a “non registered” gun from an individual and are willing to pay new price for a like new used gun. The gun markets been jacked up since Sandy hook. But it’s very nice to see all these new gun manufacturers dukeing it out to see who can make the the cheapest most accurate guns and still make $1. But that leaves us with some real risk of a slew of these guys going bankrupt overnight if something changes down in demand.

You need to find a local FFL that will do transfers for you. Start calling around.

Did I hear a recent interview correctly? They have, initially, 8,000 guns and are going to cap the apps at ~90,0000. Maybe I misheard that.

I got a copy of my local shops license a couple of years ago. I have no idea if they'll give it out to anyone of it he was willing to give it to me because I've had a handful items sent to him and have also bought a number of things from him. Unfortunately It expired in July so I need to call and get an updated one. I would think most shops would be fine giving a copy out to known customer.

I'm sure a lot of shops are hesitant to just put them out there for anyone to use. I've heard of scams where frauds on Armlist take a copy of a valid FFL and photoshop in a different address.

They received 8,000 this year that they can sell. This was how the law authorizing this program was written. I believe in upcoming years they'll be getting up to 10,000 per year. The estimates I've seen are that there should be around 100,000 total in storage. I don't think they can cap the number of applications being sent in...

I may have misheard, but what I was getting at was I thought the CMP director was expecting 90,000 apps for this first round of 8,000 pistols.

Try pawn shops that sell used guns. Some will have nosebleed prices but are willing to negotiate. Some set low prices to keep inventory churning and cash coming in. These places make their money on the financing/pawning and the more they sell above their cost, the more they can finance. A lot of these also do cheap FFL transfers as guns usually are not their primary profit maker.

Yeah. I just got a copy of a license from a local FFL this afternoon. However, they wrote on the face of it "File Copy Only No Face To Face Transfer" in red marker. I'm not sure what to make of that or how CMP will interpret that.

I can envision some unscrupulous FFL getting a copy of someone's FFL, then, in their bound book, disposing of all their guns to that FFL (on paper only), and then selling the guns on the black market. So I can see this "no face to face transfer" as sort of half-hearted attempt to guard against that, but I can also see CMP (or Bud's or whomever) reading that as "they don't do face to face transfers."

So I don't know.

I'm going to put it in my application packet and roll the dice. I didn't get drawn for the last batch of 50 M1 Carbines from Austria 2 years ago, so I'm due lol. (Pull on the one armed slot machine enough times and it HAS to pay out, right? LOL)

FOUND IT.

Applications will be capped at 10,000. So you have a slightly less than 4/5 chance.

Slightly less because the highly collectible, or historical ones will be held back for a separate auction.

Yeah, I'm not really worried too much about it. They'll take the 10k applications, create a random numbering/lottery system, and the first 8k applications drawn will get a gun (of "some" grade, maybe not your first choice.) Everyone from 8,001 and up will get wait listed for the next round of guns, if and when they ever come.

I think the more important question is which is more important: getting any gun or getting the grade you want. I'm inclined to accept only the highest grade (Service Grade, if I recall correctly), but then there is that nagging feeling that if the left takes control of both houses in November, there may never be an opportunity like this again. So if it comes up that I' number 7999, do I take whatever is left, or roll the dice on the political winds? I haven't decided yet.

My copy I currently use has that all over it too. Never been an issue when ordering guns from dealers online or gunbroker. Old guy I used to use didn’t have that on his, but he was an old guy that did guns in his basement. He would call me when something he wasnt expecting showed up and say. “Mr Sam, have you been in gunbroker again?”

I was thinking about this today, and had two comments:

1.) That's an 80% chance of getting picked. That's pretty good.

2.) I'm not sure that article is correct, or at least current (it's almost a year old.) The website says they'll take applications between Sep 4 and Oct 4, feed those names into a random number generator and that's your place in line. If your number 8001, you don't get a gun this year. That said, for them to limit it to 10k they would have to discard a lot of names, and, the only system they have for doing that is first come - first serve. First 8k to be received or first 10k whatever.

So I think it may be more like 40-50k names, of which, only 8k (or less) will get a gun. SO I think my odds are lot lower than you think they are.
