What is your preferred woods wheelgun, and why ? Please stick with centerfire cartridges.

Quite honestly, it depends on “the woods” or I should say, location of the woods.
My overall favorite for carrying in the woods is my S&W 327 Night Guard if the woods may harbor 2 legged varmints, mountain lions or rabid chipmunks and squirrels. :D
The revolver I used to turn to if feisty bruins might be encountered (see what I did there?) was my trusty Ruger original Vaquero 7.5” in .45 Colt.
Now I am sure my Ruger has been replaced by my S&W 25-15, but I need a nice holster / rig for this one.

My 327 NG with my G45 (I really need to take more photos of my guns)

I spend quite a bit of time in the woods. You might find me carrying any of my revolvers or pistols. I dont have a designated woods gun. 20190417_191219.jpg
If I'm not planning to shoot, I will often just carry my lcp.

If you dont have a SAA, you might consider one. The .45colt is a heavy, slow bullet when loaded cowboy style. It is accurate and powerful without the high pressure of 9mm, and magnums. The SAA is relatively compact for a .45 bore.
Mine is an uberti el patron 4⅝. Pietta and of course Ruger offers similar.
Probably my favorite woods gun.

My backwoods revolver use to be a Rossi Model 88; stainless steel, 3 inch barrel, and chambered for .38 Special. It was lightweight, comfortable to carry for long stretches of time, and very reliable. That was some years back and I don't do much woods walking anymore having settled in a more urban setting. If I were to go hiking in the woods again I would probably opt for one of my S&W J frame snubbies: a Model 649 or a Model 638.

For my woods, any one of a half dozen ranging from an original Bulldog 44, SP101, Blackhawk 44 special, Blackhawk 357, Model 15, or my Pro Carry. During deer season either my Super or 29-2. Usually a LCP2 in the pocket most of the time

Most often a G29 but sticking to the OP's wheelgun topic:
4.75" 1873 SAA (45C)
When a full cowboy rig isn't practical or on top of a heavy winter jacket:
4" Ruger SP101 (357 Mag)
3" 686+ (357Mag)
For more power;
3" S&W 629 Trail Boss (44Mag)
Chest or Hip carry, for longer hikes, and/or with a hip belted backpack:
S&W 386PD (357Mag)
S&W 329PD (44Spl's).

My favorite trail and woods gun and has been for many years is a Ruger Single Six in 32 mag with mid power rounds. By midpower a 100gr lead bullet going around 950-1000fps. I have loads that will get just over 1300fps with an 85gr bullet but I don't need the muzzle blast. The mid power loads are much more fun to shoot and they have just enough bump to let you know this ain't a 22 yer shootin'.

Is it just for the fun of carrying?

Will we be on foot, or on an ATV? Will we be carrying scientific equipment, or perhaps a large-format camera and tripod? Do we need to carry a tent, a stove, and food and water for several days? Is our main concern violent criminal actors? Are there large mammals in the woods?

Do we really want a "wheel gun"?

Just a few things to ponder before we decide that it would be fun to strap on that big ________ before we go out in the woods today......

Enough. We ain’t dealing with this nonsense in this thread. You wanna pack a gun for all that, feel free to enlighten us. If not, this is unnecessary.

Au contraire. It is central to any relevant discussion.

"For all that"? The question was, for what? It cannot be for everything.

If not, this is unnecessary
In any decision process, the first thing to do is to decide upon the objectives and upon the requirements.

What di you mean by "woods gun"?
