Lee Pro 6000 unboxing and testing for OAL consistency

I was only casually considering it before you went into the details in this thread.

Now it has moved up my list since the Frankford Arsenal FX-10 seems to be vaporware
If you plan on winning another state IDPA championship, you will need finished OAL consistency.

At the ripe age of 69 and with an arthritic hip, the odds are pretty slim

Maybe I'm just drawn to projects more than finished products...might explain why I've stuck with my Hornady LNL's multitude of fine adjustments over the Dillon's limited coarser settings :p

Oh god, I'm talking myself into buying a Pro 6000

Never had a press with that kind of thing.

I have run at least 100 cases of each pistol caliber, six, I reload through the new 6000 press just priming, no dies installed, to check case feeding and priming. New machine, I need to learn and get comfortable with. I decap only on another progressive, tumble in SS and then am ready to load but this time I needed to go through the pre-primed testers, thus did not prime on that short run.

OH OK
Never mind, I thought you were using a Pro4000 (ABLP)...
it looks like this:

"I decap only on another progressive, tumble in SS"
me too

I decap and then wet tumble before loading on my 4000. Maybe the 6000 will be better and easier doing it all at once???

And... me too... OH NO... I'm leaning heavily toward getting the Pro Six Pack press too!!! :D

This should be, hope it will be, better be! Saved in the files here somewhere...it is the best detailed assembly/how-to video I have seen in a long while.
I do not own this press and I watched and read the whole thing, it was that interesting...what did you say you did for a living?...

what did you say you did for a living?...
Started college as a chemistry major and Army as a medic then returned to college. Started my own business building computers and ended up working for CA state government as associate analyst, Standards Compliance Coordinator overseeing two projects, along the way became federally certified surveyor of healthcare facilities, senior analyst as project support manager and director of facility before retirement after 26 years of civil service.

As SCC/manager/director, I wrote countless policies and procedures including "best practices" guides CA government was starting to adopt in line with private sector/corporate practices. Some of my assignments were directed by Chief of Field Operations to troubleshoot/problem solve to resolution when local/regional field staff could not.

After college, I started shooting USPSA matches for fun having been introduced to 1911 in the Army when I got "volunteered" to help out in our unit's armory to ensure all the firearms operated reliably even new out of the box. Fortunately, a seasoned bullseye match shooter mentored me and taught me to shoot matches, reload and perform light gunsmithwork with focus on details of 2.5 lb trigger job and hand fitting Wilson Combat parts to donor Norinco 1911 - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/trigger-control.834737/page-2#post-11245640

Thank you. I wanted to do an in-depth review and close up evaluation all the way to full disassembly for those curious about this new press whether Lee Precision properly addressed issues customers voiced over the decades (Primer feeding, smoothness of operation, etc).

As I approached retirement several years ago, root cause analysis/problem-resolution approach I used for work translated to reloading/shooting and started "myth busting" threads using objective/measurable/repeatable data to verify various reloading/shooting notions such as use of digital scales for reloading - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-and-discussions.778197/page-11#post-12406419

And conducting "real world" testing with large sample size of 10,000+ rounds of 22LR (After shooting 30,000 rounds in different 10/22s, Take Down, ARs with CMMG conversion bolts) capturing 5/10 shot groups out of new 10/22 and T/CR22 at 50/100 yards to provide full "transparency" of testing where not just the smallest groups were posted but all groups were documented - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/real-world-accurizing-22lr-on-the-cheap.898035/

For progressive press known for shellplate tilt/deflection that can affect OAL variance, finished OAL measurement is the ultimate test, especially for those looking to load match grade rounds, of press operational consistency. And following steps were taken to test "real world" conditions of progressive reloading of using mixed range brass along with sorted headstamp brass to improve consistency:
  • Average case length of .750" was used for "Turret mode" testing
  • Case length was measured after full-length resizing
  • R-P headstamp case was selected due to greater consistency in resized case length
  • Random mixed range brass with different headstamp cases were used for "Progressive mode" testing ("Real world" testing)
  • Measuring tools (Two different calipers) were verified with pin gages and Brown & Sharpe micrometer - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ks-for-digital-calibers.821135/#post-10545265
  • Flaring of case mouth (.380") and taper crimp (.378") die adjustments were done with .750" resized case length

And growing sample size of objective/measurable/repeatable data speak for themselves in expressing SPP/Pro 6000's operational consistency as to what OAL variance range to expect when using mixed range brass or sorted same headstamp brass - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...r-oal-consistency.911743/page-3#post-12446468
  • Blazer unsorted - OAL of 1.128"-1.133" (.005" variance)
  • G.F.L. unsorted - OAL of 1.129"-1.133" (.004" variance)
  • .FC. unsorted - OAL of 1.128"-1.131" (.003" variance)
  • FC unsorted - OAL of 1.130"-1.132" (.002" variance)
  • WIN unsorted - OAL of 1.131"-1.133" (.002" variance)
  • R-P unsorted - OAL of 1.133"-1.134" (.001" variance)
  • R-P "." unsorted - OAL of 1.134"-1.135" (.001" variance)

Livelife, I made a couple of videos about mine as well. Even a short video about a problem I had with the primer return spring. I kinked it. But damn, your post is awesome and completely thorough. Thanks!!

Makes me curious what your pre-retirement day job was.....
State government worker - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...r-oal-consistency.911743/page-4#post-12453362

And I am realizing what people told me about retirement was not true. "Retired" means you just get "tired" over and over, day after day. :D Since my retirement of 7/4/19, I have never worked so hard in my life fulfilling wife's never ending "honey-do" list of projects.

I thought about and tried going back to work (I have 2 active job offers that I could accept one being statewide training/manager where I could set my own hours and where I work at) so I could have some moments of leisure but wife won't let me ... :p

Here I thought I read every post in this thread......missed the career description.....getting old does that.

Since you've gotten so good at influencing others doing your day job....maybe it'll work on your wife. Convince her to get a job, and she'll be too tired to think up domestic jobs for you? ...... and you'll have more time and energy to shoot and reload! ;) I know....wouldn't work at my house either....

After 28 years together, she has been the best thing to happen in my life.

Just as I happily fulfill her "honey do" list of projects, she reciprocates back to me as well. We fully support each other's pursuit of hobbies and I recently increased her "do whatever" slush fund to $15,000, no questions asked.

She took a fall recently and has been stuck with me for a couple of months...it's driving her crazy. ;)
When she reaches that point she goes, "Honey, it's been a while since you went shooting ..." and I happily respond, "You are absolutely correct, it's time for me to go shooting." :D

Heck, she even eagerly helps me load up guns/ammo. :p

You sir, just described my life to a "T".

Right Answer! 51 years for me......better each day....still. 5 kids, 16 grandkids, 5 greats and counting.

One of the reasons my wife is resistant to retire is because she'd have to spend more time with me. She took a fall recently and has been stuck with me for a couple of months...it's driving her crazy. ;)
Sounds like around my house. I just get back on both feet and my wife falls in Pa and breaks her knee. Then won't go to a doctor up there, so I have to drive her the 500 miles home and take her to the hospital she works at in NC. Now she's in a steel splint for 8 weeks.
We've been married for 43 yrs.

Well, this is after all, the "High Road" forum. :)

You know the notion, "Build it and they will come"? So perhaps "High Road" reloaders and shooters gravitated towards THR over the decades? ;)

After lurking for years while on other gun forums, I decided to post on THR more than a decade ago as I found THR more friendly and welcoming, particularly to new reloaders. It's a great forum I have no issues referring new and seasoned shooters/reloaders to.
