9mm range gun

I am looking at a CZ 75 Compact right now, though I am not sure which one. I dont want a decocker and they dont seem to make one with an alloy frame and a safety.

Go look at a used S&W 5906. You can find police trade-ins for ~$350. They are heavy, very low recoil, very accurate, and extremely reliable.

The Ruger P89 and P95 would both fill the bill.

Witness Elite Match. It's copied off of the CZ 75 so it's very similar. I've had a CZ P-01 and a 75B and I shoot much better with the Witness than I did with either CZ. It is single action only with a real sweet trigger. They can be had in the mid $500s.



The FO front sight was an add on.

How about a Glock 17L, which has a longer barrel than the 34 (6 inches)? If you've got the money, either a S&W 952 or a Sig P-210 (if you can find one). As aforementioned, the Witness Elite Match is a very accurate pistol. However, mine is a 45ACP, so I can't comment about the 9mm...

The CZ Shadow Target looks like a great gun.

I have a CZ75BD witha 5" BarSto barrel that shoots lights out. S&W 952-2 is very accurate. Les Baer 9mm PII is my favorite range gun, but I like the 1911 platform a lot. The CZ is easily as accurate as either of the more expensive guns, and cost about $850 with the new barrel. I only replaced the barrel because of a squib in a double tap. Bulged the barrel a bit.

All three are full sized all steel and good for 4-500 rounds or more at a session if you want.

I have a BHP, put a BarSto in it and it is not as accurate. Local smith installed it, BarSto did the CZ. The BHP has the worst single action trigger of them all.

CZ also has a tactical sport. I have the older Standard IPSC in .40, which is basically the same gun. Very accurate, Hair trigger.

That Witness looks good as well.

I have a Glock 34 which is great, I just don't like the Glock triggers as well. Not knocking it, I have it in my desk at work for personal defense and trust it with my life every day, just not my cup o tea for the range.

+1 on the 5906. Great, inexpensive, reliable 9mm pistol that can last for tens of thousands of rounds at the range and keep on chuggin.

I love the XD Tactical. It has a 5" barrel, low recoil and shoots great. Probably can get them cheaper than some of the others mentioned. It has been very reliable as well.

EAA/Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match 9mm.

It's a Cz-clone that's better than a CZ as in the interest of streamlining the manufacturing this design ended up with less parts to mess up and is far less complicated to detail-strip, upgrade or smith, yet, most importantly, is free of the dreaded CZ-hammer-camming (a CZ trigger CANNOT be made as good as these do to the design differences... no amount of smithing on one can change that).

Use it to annoy any gun-snob friends by shooting it side-by-side to any of their high dollar Ed Brown's, Wilson's, Kimber's, Baer's, etc... laugh at them as they scratch their heads wondering why your $500 gun in trigger quality and accuracy is embarrassing their pricey toys... great fun!

I'll second the CZ SP01 - It's a great, comfortable shooter and it's size makes it a great range pistol. And I love my 92fs - it's a classic design, with lots of available accessories and parts.

The Ruger P series is a good gun - but not quite what he specced out above with 1" groups. Plus, the SA triggers on them aren't that great.

For a range gun? How much do you want to spend? It's hard to beat a Sig P210. Maybe a S&W Model 952.

But for range use, I'd rather have a match-grade .22 and shoot more.

CZ 75B or 75 compact all the way. These are step above the Witness, customer service is good (should you need it), reliable and scary accurate pistols. You can't go wrong with a CZ!

NO, they're not, saying so just means you don't know any better... if you knew, you wouldn't. Those guns triggers are not even in the same league (DA/SA, AND the de-cocker version, you're kidding right...), the only thing close from CZ would be a 75SA or maybe a TS, except they both still have hammer-camming and cannot be made as crisp as the Tanfoglio design will be from the start. I've owned several CZ's, I like them, but detail strip them next to the Tanfoglio design and you'll be surprised... For example, changing to a lighter hammer spring on the Elite Match means knocking out one hammer pin, you need to pretty much take the entire CZ apart to do the same thing including the grips, twice as many parts involved, and hammer-camming will always be present even in their SA designs unless you're a master gunsmith and have no problem cutting sears multiple times until you get one with "neutral engagement", good luck...

I like them, but detail strip them next to the Tanfoglio design and you'll be surprised...

Lighten up, the OP would do fine with either, but having the customer service support can/is a selling point for CZ.

By your logic, Hi-Point has great customer service, maybe that would be the best pick for the OP's "range-only 9mm"?
EAA's customer support is bad, that's known, however, Tanfoglio makes the Elite Match in their custom shop and it's a very high quality piece, EAA will replace or repair it if there's an issue, the thread is about "best 9mm for the range", deciding on a gun based on customer service over trigger quality, accuracy potential, etc. will leave many of the best choices out.

I made my comment because as someone with experience with both it's obvious you made your statement while having no experience with the piece your CZ is "a step above", and saying what YOU said doesn't make it so.

CZ are excellent but alot of $$$$$ i would go wiht the Ruger SR9 and shoot the crap out of it. if i had a CZ it would be in a showcase of bulletproof glass

You might look at the Sig Pro SP2022. It is a full size gun, built like a tank, has Sig's proverbial accuracy, and has one of Sig's best DA/SA triggers. It has been available from CDNN for $399.

+20 on the CZ75!

The BHP is also a good choice. The one below has had a lot of custom work and is even better than my 75B. It is concealable and not too heavy, but would make a great range gun as well.

If I were you I would take a good look at the CZ 75 Tactical Sport in 9mm for an excellent range gun. It is a single action only. Out of the box the trigger runs 22 OZ - 24 OZ on mine (measured). They have a decent sight radius with the 5 1/8" barrel.
