Hello all i have just traded a smith 908 for a glock 23 after shooting hundreds of rounds i love the gun.Im just worried about all the talk of kabooms with this caliber and make of gun should i be?

No.

Just don't use shady reloads without an aftermarket barrel. If you reload be very careful. Other than that you should be good.

Don't shoot lead bullets or reloaded ammunition in the stock barrel. Also steer clear of anything marked ".40 +P" or the like.

Agreed with the above, although I would have said no "shady" reloads, period. That goes for any gun. Some time I will put up some pictures of what remains of a Ruger Super Blackhawk I own that was the victim of one.

As for the Glock in .40 caliber, although they do have a couple of design features that may make them a little more sensitive (but also enhance feeding reliability), practically every "KB" incident that has been thoroughly investigated and properly documented has been with an overcharged reloaded or even factory cartridge. When the detonation "flashes" down into the magazine well, the frame, being plastic and not designed to contain an explosion, will often shatter. But if you stick with factory new cartridges or properly executed reloads, the odds of anything happening are next to nil. Finally, this is not the only gun that "KBs" happen to.

I love my glock 23. The best midsize high cap out there. Mine is rather new and has a normal looking barrel. Not really any unsupported chamber look at all. Maybe they changed.

But some ground rules I've learned with the Glock 23:

-use good ammo, no Wolf, no bubba reloads. (you can use high quality reloads you do yourself, not bubbas, not gunshow reloads)

I like Federal 180gn .40 (Walmart) for practice the best. Speer Lawman, Corbon, Federal, or Winchester for JHP defensive rounds.

-clean the barrel. The "you don't have to clean perfection" bit is stupid.
-clean the firing pin channel, keep the firing pin clean, plenty of detail stripping youtube vids, it's easy.
-replace the trigger spring regularly, it sucks when it breaks.
-buy spare mags from online retailers that sell alot of Glock mags like Lone Wolf. Glock constantly updates it's mags. They are on variation 800493.234 by now. Dusty gun store mags stink. I have a few that don't hold max capacity, old folloers, wrong spring, etc.
-get G22 mags for reloads, easier to tac reload and hold 15. (gen 8 follower)
-lube as per the manual
-be ready for a bit more kick than a G19 or most other midsized guns, it won't affect your shooting much, but it's there
-don't use Blazer, Wolf, or Remington UMC ammo in your Glock.

This is a perfect example of internet fear-mongering gone ramped. I have put several thousand round through both of my G .40s without a problem and so has most everyone else.

LOL.

So has 'most' everyone else? If you're not one of the 'mosts' you might beg to differ...

glock's "kaboom" for the same reason other pistols do: weakened reloaded brass/overcharged reloads.

that's why it says in big red letter inside your glock case "DO NOT USE RELOADS".

yes, i know most every manufacturer warns against reloads, and a lot of folks do in fact press their luck by reloading for their glocks, but do you want to press your luck as well?

I own a Glock 27 (40s&w). The internet is a wonderful place if you want to start/feed rumors about anything. Yes, some Glocks have had problems with "being blown up" but no more than any other firearm. As FMJ said don't use reloads or cowboy loads (unless you are running an aftermarket barrel). I don't trust anything I read on the internet anyway without verifying it first. The Glock rumors about these guns "going off for no apparent reason" and "Glocks blowup because their chamber design is inherently flawed" amuses me. You Tube is a tool these guys use to propagate their rumors. Don't you just love the internet.

What's actually "amusing" is dismissing the Glock kaboom as simply internet rumor mill.

To say other manufactures have just as many kabooms is even more amusing.

Glocks loose chamber specs and lack of full case support is also contributing to those kabooms and anyone claiming not is full of BS.....Period.

"Glock Perfection" :scrutiny:

glock's "kaboom" for the same reason other pistols do

This one I can agree with.

Whether there's more or less than other manufacturers really depends on how you want to read the statistics that sound remarkably like no objective research was done.
My personal feelings towards the Glocks is that the 9mm is probably by far their best product, but beyond that anything is pure guessing games on my end and I think on anyone's end here.

But yes, a Glock will go kaboom like any other gun in remarkably ... the same cases. If you stick with factory stuff and clean it and lube it and hug it at night, it'll be fine. 8)

Be aware of bullet "set-back" for any gun that shoots .40 S&W. It's a high pressure round that can be dangerous if the charge should be compressed.

I do think all Glocks have the little no reload warning. Seems to be standard fare.
Now the question really is how many other manufacturers have that warning, which nobody seems to like to point out.

At the risk of beating a LONG dead horse... Your spinning the FACTS to fit your own agenda...

It is a FACT that Glock chambers are less supported than some other designs.

It is a FACT that Glocks have experienced catastrophic failures.

This is where detractors stop thinking, and start ignoring the rest of the facts:

It is a FACT that guns don't blow up unless something ruptures (I'm captain obvious).

It is a FACT that the two ways modern guns blow up are A) Ruptured cases B) Ruptured barrels

It is a FACT that ruptured barrels are caused by over charged rounds OR squibs followed by standard charge rounds - BOTH situations do the same thing - create too much pressure for the barrel to stand.

It is a FACT that ruptured case heads are caused by A) weak / flawed brass B) over charged rounds - too much pressure was created, and the brass cant take it (again, captain obvious).

Thus we arrive at the FACT that a Glocks 'unsupported chamber' has nothing to do with WHY a 'Kaboom' happens.

It is a FACT that once an unavoidable 'Kaboom' happens, a Glock chamber doesn't support the shattered case web very well.

It is a FACT that other pistols with fully supported chambers, such as HK, Steyr, and Walther, have also had similar failures.

It is a FACT that 8 of 10 (or more) 'kabooms' occur with 'Billy-Bob-Joe-Jack's gun show reloads'.

It is a FACT that factory ammunition has also been shown to produce barrel bursting squibs and double charges - simply at a much lower frequency than reloads.

There is no way around it. 'Kabooms' are too well documented, and there is just too much evidence - Guns don't cause themselves to blow up. Bad ammo, either reload or in some cases factory, is the cause of 99.999% of catastrophic failures.

Yes, its a FACT that the Glock design is not perfect; that's marketing hype... But its a FACT that the Glock is a solid, reliable, and effective side arm which has provided amiable service for both police and military.

you made a great choice, the g23 will do you fine.

yes stay away from lead in the factory barrel, there are many people that shoot lead in there, and keep them really clean, however why take the chance. get a aftermarket barrel if you want to shoot lead.

as long as you use factory loaded ammo you will be good to go. I agree stay away from shady reloads in any gun no matter what it is. i only shoot reloads that i have reloaded myself end of story.

Well, you spun yourself quite a web there....LMAO....but the "FACT" of the matter is the one reposted above is the only one that really matters and the reason Glocks tend to KABOOM more often than others.

Of course though, caused mostly by "Billy-Bob-Joe-Jack reloads".

Has it ever dawned on anyone, that maybe these gun show reloaders hate Perfection?

You really are just trying to be difficult now.
I take it the difference between frequency and magnitude is lost on you?

LOL ..... I'm accused of spinning because I dare to explain the reason Glocks tend to kaboom more often than others. Yet I'm the one being difficult. :neener:

I've never said Glocks kaboom on their on without the help of crap ammo. With that said, for some THR members to act as if the loose chambers and lack of full case support does not contribute to the problem is ridiculously negligent.

Most guns, if not all, have a "warning" about using reloads in their manuals. It is not a Glock thing. Anyone ignorant in the reloading hobby can blow up any gun! I know of a local deputy, who is a local competitor, who has shot 20-30,000 rounds of lead (the horror!!) reloads (egads!!) in his stock G22 .40 cal. WITH the factory Glock barrel. His words were "if I can't shoot cast and reloads through it I don't want it" He said a proper cycle of cleaning and care will stave off any issues. That and proper reloading practices.

Grey Morel just got a callus on his Pimp hand from that epic beat down!

And I was trying to stay out of this thread...

What are the odds?
Glock has sold 40 times more guns than all those of simular design...COMBINED:what:

And a few have blowed up...when abused.

Note: I have a Storm Lake 40 t0 9 conversion barrel in my 23:uhoh:
