Multiple handgun buy

I agree with your sentiments. The extra paperwork is on the FFL's end of things. You shouldn't have to fill anything else out. I've bought two or more in the same week (the rule is 2+ within so many days, not just on the same day) from the same FFL and never been contacted by anyone.

Asked my FFL about it once and he only knew of one of his customers being contacted, and that was because he bought a large number of the same model pistol for his small town police department without going the department purchase order route so BATFE thought he might have bought them to sell or something.

Still, i'd rather they not have the information.

Buy one, put the other on layaway for 8 days.

Its only required for more than one handgun purchase within 5 days from the same FFL. The FFL has to fill out the 3310 and fax or mail it to the ATF by the end of that business day.

I had a similar thing happen to me last year. I purchased 2 p7's from cdnn and when I went to pick them up from my ffl, he mentioned that I may want to take one and wait 30 days before i sign for the other. I guess he has heard of the atf paying a visit to people who have taken delivery of multiple guns at once.

In my state you can only buy one handgun a month unless you have a concealed carry permit.

Let the dealer fill out the worthless paperwork, it isn't your problem and it adds more worthless data to the worthless database in the worthless program that has never prevented a violent crime.

Screw 'em, not your problem, and not a reason to make an extra trip.

In NC, my understanding is the extra paperwork for "two-or-more-handguns" only goes to the local county Sheriff's office and they're supposed to destroy it after eleven days or something like that. I really don't think the notification requirement paperwork goes any further than that. Am I wrong?

Its 5 days here but only if you buy two at the same sorce.
they told me that they even have to send a copy to the sheriff.
I dont think its a big deal but to many people know more than they need to already.So I allways put money down and complete the transaction in 5 days.
I dont like to wait but I like being on someones list even less.

Here is the federal provision for reporting multiple handguns purchases within a five-day period. Chapter 44, Title 18 of the United States Code. 18 USC 923(g)(3)(A) states:

"Each licensee shall prepare a report of multiple sales or other dispositions whenever the licensee sells or otherwise disposes of, at one time or during any five consecutive business days, two or more pistols, or revolvers, or any combination of pistols and revolvers totaling two or more, to an unlicensed person. The report shall be prepared on a form specified by the Attorney General and forwarded to the office specified thereon and to the department of State police or State law enforcement agency of the State or local law enforcement agency of the local jurisdiction in which the sale or other disposition took place, not later than the close of business on the day that the multiple sale or other disposition occurs."

The VA state police have a form anyone can fill out to buy multiple handguns at one time. You just need a reason - matched pair, collection, etc. JT

I just bought three consecutive numbered pistols last week here in NC and had no extra paper work to go along with the purchase. I have a CHL so that may have made a difference. And YES I HAD to have them because they are consecutive numbers..... I don't know why I just did....

In NC, More than 1 = ATF being notified.

For those that prefer that the gov't doesn't know more about them than necessary, it should be noted that the multiple handgun form is one of the few times the gov't actually knows what you bought, including the make, model, serial number, and caliber. For general NICS checks, the dealer just selects Handgun, Long gun, or Other (for receivers and such). A lot more detail than that goes into a multiple handgun purchase form.

You didn't fill out any extra paperwork, but your dealer did. He then sent a copy of the form to the local law enforcement and a copy to the ATF.

The form is a carbon copy in triplicate. Page 1 gets mailed or faxed to the ATF. Page 2 goes to local law enforcement. Page 3 stays with the dealer, generally stapled to the 4473 that matches the purchase.

Funny story here - when we called our local LE office to find out where exactly to send it (they have multiple offices in the county), they wanted to know why we would even submit something like this. Or as the nice lady on the phone said, "Honey, this is West Virginia! We know everyone's got a gun."

What he said.
The form is useless except that ATF uses them to create a database. Of course they don't know what happened to the gun after the form was filed. If you sold it the next day, they won't know that.
