Hey folks,

Based on the interest generated in another thread concerning L&L presses, I have started a new thread listing data last updated in March of 2010. The last reported data from the thread of March 2010 (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=500013) is as follows:

Additional comments made by LNL owners are noted below:

---Canuck, IL - Reports that change in primer system came at serial number 7,000.
---Walkalong - Has a Pro-Jector with serial # 18,396. He also says the $29 he spent for his EZ-Ject upgrade was worth the expense.
---Randy - States that Hornady started offering the EZ-Ject system in Jan 2009. Serial number unknown. Converted his to EZ-Ject in June 09.
---Dodge DeBoulet - Indicated his press came with 3 powder drop tubes, two primer slides & seating punches; also indicated his powder screw tubes are not micrometer style which seems to be an add on purchase.
---Ole Farmer Buck - Hornady told him they started the EZ-Ject system with serial number 15,000, so his press at 16,153 is one of the first presses with EZ-Ject. He also reports he just got his 2nd LNL press Jan 2010.
---RNG (Richard) Upgraded to EZ-Ject in October 2009 and considers it money well spent.
---Gryffydd - Powder measure comes with baffle now. Purchased from Graff's.
---1911pewpew - Purchased from Midway.
---Fella5 (Scott) - Purchased from Midway.
---Mongoose - Hornady started offering the EZject in Jan '09--I bought my LnL in December '08 and it has the EZ-ject.
---Thorn originally had wire eject, but has upgraded to EZ-Ject subplate.
---Smith627 has upgraded to EZ-Ject - problems with 9mm. Has problems seating primers low enough
---Sommerled reports his oldest (2001) LNL press has the old primer system with the brass tubes where you remove the whole steel containment sleeve. I prefer this older style. It also has the primer plunger with thumb nut that is a poor design, hard to tighten and comes loose alot. Also the return spring for the powder measure pulls down at an angle with this older press and it sometimes binds up if not dry lubed. The wire ejects work most of the time when I occaisionaly rub a little die sizing wax on the contact area with a Qtip.
---Robctwo reports he has put 117,800 rounds through it to March 2010 and that it was rebuilt for cost of shipping one way at around 85,000.

I will keep adding data to the list as long as folks continue reporting information via thread data, PM, or E-Mail. Of all the owners reporting, only three or four of them report purchases prior to 2008. Obviously, Hornady has sold a whole lot of these presses in the past two years even though they have been making them since 1997. Presses purchased in 2001 and 2004 were just recently reported, and I hope more of these older presses and comments will be reported.

For a challenge of sorts, allow me to point out that I still have the oldest press (serial #1,525) reported so far, so how about some of those even older folks check their serial numbers and purchase dates and report them? Come on, let's see some folks report some of those LNLs with serial numbers lower than 1,525. I am not the only old guy here.

Also remember that I keep this LNL press info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file to anyone who wants it via E-Mail.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If interest in this subject is there, I will update all information provided, record it in an Excel spreadsheet, and provide a copy of the Excel file via E-Mail to anyone who wants it.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

My first post on this site is to add my LnL to your list. Purchased 11-23-11, Serial Number 36156. Advised my BIL to sign up as well, his # will be a few less than mine. I'll have to ask my LGS who he ordered the LnL through.

I will keep adding data to the list as long as folks continue reporting information via thread data, PM, or E-Mail. Of all the serial numbers reported, only six or seven were purchases made prior to 2008. Mine is the only reported press purchased before 2000.

It seems Hornady sold about 4,000 units in the first four years between 1997 and 2001, 6,000 units in the next five years between 2001 and 2006, and a whopping 26,000 units in the last five years between 2006 and 2011. A lot of folks are buying these units, so Hornady must be doing something right by their customers.

Come on folks, doesn't anyone have a press older than mine? I cannot be the oldest guy here. Someone has to have a serial number lower than 1,525.

I keep this LNL serial number info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file via E-Mail to anyone who would like it.

I would say that the bullet deal has been a marketing success. I'm not saying anything against their presses, they make good solid equipment. But how many times have you heard folks say that the free bullets were the deciding factor between the Hornady press and the brand X press.

I hope whoever came up with that idea got more than an 'attaboy' and a pat on the back.

Seedtick

:)

Hey Seed,

You are absolutely correct. In all those years Hornady was offering their bullet deals, a majority of folks on the forum talking about buying a progressive press were obviously very focused on the bullet offer.

You might also remember during that same time, that I was advising folks to make their decision based on an informed investigation of each of the different progressive presses available. I implored folks to not make their decision based on a limited bunch of free bullets. I tried to impress on folks that that they would be using whatever press they chose long after any free bullet offer would be just a faded memory.

In 1997 I chose to buy the Hornady L&L progressive, but that was long before they were making any bullet deals. I had spent a good bit of time loading cartridges on different friends progressive presses. I had narrowed my decision to the Hornady Projector and the Dillon 650 and I was leaning toward the Projector. Then Hornady came out with the L&L, and when I looked at this machine, I bought one right away. That is why I got such a low serial number. In fact, they were kind of hard to find in the summer of 1997.

Yes, the bullet deal sure seems like it was a brilliant marketing success, and I am a bit ambivalent about that fact. I just hope those folks who chose to buy a Hornady L&L because of the bullet deal have not developed buyer's remorse after the bullets ran out.

Did you get your .44s yet? I hope you are happy with them. To tell the truth, I am starting to get seller's remorse after selling most of my guns. I never even liked to shoot my .44 Ruger Super Blackhawk, but I sure did like walking around Tombstone with it and with my Marlin Cowboy 45-70. I do leather work and had made my hand carved holster and cartridge belt for my Ruger, and I made a matching hand carved scabbard for my Marlin Cowboy that I could carry on my back. Yeah, I know a horse would have been nice, but I seem to fall off horses too easily.

I don't know what I will do for a costume if I make it back to Tombstone again. I do still have the Marlin Cowboy, but no western style revolver. I still would like to go back out there and work in one of the acting companies there. Not much pay, but a lot of fun for me.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

The bullets aren't FREE. It's really a rebate on your purchase price and you pay $14.95 for the shipping & handling.

Great marketing though.

I agree, I am sure a number of folks did not look past the bullet deal. Just like some folks do not look past the price of the progressive press from one of the other players in the market.

Over the two years that I have had my L-N-L, I like it more and more as I make adjustments in my reloading process and improvement tweaks in the press. I am finding the press is quite flexible.

No buyer's remorse here.

Not that I could not make another brand of press do the same things.

Dave, your collection of L-N-L data is interesting.

I agree completely. The bullet deal was only icing on the cake after several months of research. I read everything I could find on all types of progressive presses. I watched all the YouTube's ten or more times. Only after deciding which press was right for me did I consider the "free" bullets. The "something-for-nothing" lobe of my brain made me happy about the deal, but I wouldn't make a long-term capital investment based on an hour's worth of expendable supplies.

I love my LNL. It is just as easy to load a test batch of ten as it is to load 500. Changing the shell plate to change calibers takes well under a minute. Changing the dies out might take it to a full minute, might. I just recently started using the LNL measure that came with it. I bought the micrometer rifle insert. I cleaned all the oil off/out of the measure and it works like a champ using the linkage. I am only using it for one caliber right now.

No regrets here, and I didn't even get bullets with mine, buying it second hand the way I did. :)

Hey Walk,

You are something else. I may be old and stuck in the mud, but you are one old Bama Hillbilly. You sized your cases in a seperate operation, but you also use your L&L to do a test batch of 10!?!? Don't tell me you got rid of your single stage press. Do not tell me that.

You know, my wife is from Perry County, Pennsylvania, and folks up here talk about how slow Perry County folks are. You know, like they try to blow electric lights out or have to divorce their brother to marry their cousin. Well, I am starting to think that maybe my wife's Perry County people may have some close ties to some folks down in Bama. Do you know what I mean, Walk?

Why would you fool around with your L&L for a few rounds instead of your old RockChucker? Geez, if I ever get back down throug Alabama again, I am going to ask you if I could stop by just to see you in person. I'd like to check to see if you might have six fingers on one hand like some of my wife's kin do.

I sure do hope you do not get mad at me for teasing you. You really are quite an interesting fellow, Walk.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

I guess I will put mine SN in to the chart.
Purchased in Jan of 2008 Wire Eject SN 12,9XX
Added the brass feeder in July of 2008
did the EZ-Eject upgrade soon as it was available.

The 1000 Free Bullets was just icing on the cake. I did not consider the bullets in my decision. I calculated my annual usage and how fast it would pay for it self, less than one year in my case. I like the simplicity of the design, 1/2 stroke indexing and priming system.

Would do it again if I had too.

you also use your L&L to do a test batch of 10!?!? Don't tell me you got rid of your single stage press.
Nope, I still have it.

Why would you fool around with your L&L for a few rounds instead of your old RockChucker? Geez, if I ever get back down throug Alabama again, I am going to ask you
Come on down, let me show you how, and when you leave you will wonder why you haven't been doing it my way all this time.

Perry County people may have some close ties to some folks down in Bama.
Most likely do.

you might have six fingers on one hand
Just five each. Heck, if I had six I could really make the LNL hum.

You really are quite an interesting fellow, Walk.
I am flattered. AC

Hey Walk,

I also size cases at a different time than loading them. I prep them shortly after shooting. Small batches go quickly. The primer systems and I do not get along so I prime off the press. No big deal since I resized then cleaned them at an earlier time.

I load virtually all of my rifle rounds on a single stage. I still have two of them.

Why would you fool around with your L&L for a few rounds instead of your old RockChucker?

I find setting up the powder measure to be the most labor intensive part of setting up the press for a cartridge. I have loaded small batches, or batches with test powders by charging the cases off the press then running them through the Hornady for bullet seating and crimping. I currently load 380 ACP that way as I have not ironed out some issues with the case activated powder drop and the short 380 ACP case. (i do not load 380 ACP very often)

Dies set up for the Hornady AP press need to be reset if I wish to use them on my single stage. So, i don't do that, it takes too much time. I just operate the Hornady much like a single stage for the test loads except that the Hornady seats the bullet at one station and crimps at the next station with the same stroke of the handle.

I like the flexibility of the Hornady as I can install dies in any of the 5 positions to suit the task at hand. This could be done on a Dillon or RCBS progressive, but not as conveniently.

Yup, Walkalong has some good suggestions, advice and knowledge.
