Best bear gun?

Bring along a fat fella then simply out run him. Kidding, my two most powerful handgun cartridges are .357 mag and 44 mag. So i'd take along my .44. That's not to so say I wouldn't feel unsafe with my .357 blackhawk loaded hot with hard cast bullets.

Good luck in your decision.

12 gauge. But since that's not a handgun I'll just say the bigger the better. That's JMHO though, others are free to carry bells and whatnot.

Kind of backwards to me that we recently had a thread where someone was asking about a .454/.460 for HD and in a bear thread we've got folks saying a 9mm will do.

True. But you have to realize "best bear gun" is THR member's favorite topic along with "Mossberg or 870". ".45 acp or 9mm".

With these topics consistently being brought up, of course you'll get the guy who says 9mm is just fine. Then a guy will come along swearing his life on bear mace. Then a guy will come along with the story of the woman who killed a grizzly with a .22 lr and shot placement this and that.

My opinion is go as big as your comfortable carrying and shooting in a land where you are prey and not predator.

I was hiking in the Tetons and ran across a bear on the side of the trail. About 20 or so feet away. Pucker factor was extremely high. Not armed. Nothing happened it wandered away. Honestly, after that I wouldn't feel even comfortable with any handgun at all.
A 12 gauge would be about the smallest thing I would be comfortable with, along with a handgun that I could get a lot of effective rounds off as quick as possible. For me that would be a 44 with 240 hardcast bullets. A bear can be huge, you don't get to pick the size or temperament of the bear you run into. IMHO pack as big as you can.

I don't worry about the black bears at home, they are used to humans and skitish. When I go camping up by the Canadian border i carry a 4" 5 shot sp101 with 357's. I'm considering getting a comander or officers size 1911 45 for the same purpose. If I was in brown bear country I would probably carry a S&W model 69 44 or a 10mm 1911 loaded with hard cast. I've never encountered anything but black bears though so my opinion is not worth anything.

I had a similar experience in Yellowstone many years ago. I was maybe 30 or 40 feet away. It was a small bear maybe 500 to 600 lbs.

The experience lead me to the same conclusion at least in regards to packing as big as you can. I'd be comfortable with a big Bore revolver though.

For black bear, a .357 is not too light. When shooting in self defense, penetration is your primary concern and shooting at the nose is what's going to put the bear down the fastest. If you go in through the nose you send it right into the brain, which will kill it instantly. If you go for between the eyes or for the head, you won't get it into the brain, but you can deflect it off of the rather thick bony part of the skull. To penetrate that, you'll need a bigger, heavier revolver with a far more powerful load, and even then it may go through.

Unfortunately, the Ruger GP-100 and the S&W 686 are too damn heavy due to the underlug barrels, but you can find some good, used Ruger Security-Six/Speed-Six or S&W 66 revolvers. They are superb hunting/outdoor pistols and are perfect for use against black bears. Good hunting knives also have been used against black bears (I also know of a case where a man used a 4-inch folding knife against a black bear and saved his wife in the process. A park ranger followed the blood trail the following day and found the bear's body some distance from the fight. In this case, however, the bear had attacked the man's wife while she was preparing the meal and he was relieving himself. He came running when he heard her scream.)

Ruger Speed-Six 3-inch is a great hiking companion.

I don't like taking the lives of animals unless absolutely necessary, so if you have some overweight Hillary Clinton supporters, please invite them to accompany you on your deep-woods hiking, camping or fishing expeditions. If you have no such friends (and who would admit it if they had?), simply try the non-lethal approaches. Nautical horns, bells and pepper spray all have been shown to work.

Hasn't that myth (deflection) been put to bed. Maybe a small caliber pistol with hollow points might, but I doubt a 357 would deflect.

I think the more important factor is can you actually hit a charging bear in the brain pan with a revolver. I fancy myself a decent shot but I don’t know if I could pull that off. That would be about like trying to shoot a softball that someone threw at you.

I actually would think a full-power .357 JSP or hard cast bullet would penetrate that bony section on top. I just never have talked to anyone who's penetrated it. As the bear roars, it tilts its head up, and if the bullet would deflect, that's most likely where it would do so. I'm not crazy about making one angry (you wouldn't like them when they're angry). I've seen penetration tests and .357s are superb penetraters. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go crashing right on through. I just want to see someone else prove it. In other words, I don't want to see the words, “It wasn't a myth!“ inscribed on my tombstone. As a friend of mine would say, “The first fifteen seconds wouldn't be worth it!“

Right now my most powerful handgun is a 4" 357. If I had to go somewhere that I felt I might encounter something big and toothy I'd grab either some buffalo bore or federal 180gr WFN's and feel pretty good.

I love all the Bear internet post. I hunt in the Dismal swamp, have run across a few black bears, but they just haul a&&. I do carry a Ruger LCR9mm, but not for bears, but for any nutcase, two legged animal I might come across back there. I guess If I was in AK, I would carry "Spray" and maybe a light weight 18" 20 ga. like my Mossberg. Maybe with a Pistol Grip. Better and easier to handle than a Pistol or Revolver and plenty of power at short range.
What does scare me more than any bear, is coming across a Big Foot creature. (Not Michelle Obama).

Your 357 is just fine... I live and work in woods of northern Idaho, wa, mt. And I carry an 8 shot 357 daily. I’ve been chased by bears and moose, stalked by cougars and wolves... licked on the face by a bear too! Had need to use my gun for defense twice ( not counting snakes)

But don’t pass up this chance to buy a new gun if that’s what you’re hoping to hear... rarely a bad idea :). In that case you for sure need a 44 or a 454 or a 460 or all of the above.

Just remember the weight of the gun will often determine whether you actuallly have it with you when you’re active out of doors or if you end up leaving it in the truck

I don't suppose you'd care to share some of those accounts, would you? Especially chased by bears, licked on the face and your defensive use of a gun?

I’ll share just one since I’m typing from a phone.. nor do I want to take over someone else’s thread.
Licked by a bear; I was out working in the mountains of western Montana, sleeping under the stars and hadn’t bathed in over a week... a bear confused my head for a salt block and started licking away at my scalp and forehead as I slept. In my sleep I thought it was a big bug crawling in my hair or a chipmunk playing on my forehead and gave it a swat. Slapped the bear on the nose so he let out a surprised grunt/woof which really woke me up fast. I turned around and we were nose to nose. All I had handy was my flashlight so I turned it on and shone it right in his eyes reaching with my other hand for some weapon all I found was a pine cone.. so I threw it at him... he retreated several steps and just kept staring at me ( prob wondering why his salt lick was moving). Once I saw he would retreat I scooped up several more pine cones, as I extracted myself from my sleeping bag and proceeded to chase him a couple hundred feet out of camp hurling pine cones at him in my skivvies. (Me in the skivvies... not the bear ) it was a black bear but he sure looked big standing over me... though he somehow shrunk to half size when I got the flashlight on him.
After chasing him off I retrieved my gun and went back to sleep holding it
So there you have it...

I'd love to see a video of this. :)

blue jeans, we've interacted before I believe on THR correct? You're a stand exam contractor, right?

Correct, 460shooter. I remember your helpful comments when I was shopping for my new gun and had a thread going for recommendations. Speaking of which; the s&w 327 is alive and well.. one of my favorite guns
