Just be careful out there. Hang food high away from camp.

Thanks!

I'm going with the 357 and heavy cast bullets. As far as the chances of having to use it, I hope little to none, but I hope the same about two legged varmints and I see a lot of fellow sportsmen still carrying. Now for pepper spray, I'm seen it work and used it myself on men and women (31 yrs a PO), This was only 2% Oleoresin Capsicum. The stuff used on a bovine was the real stuff in the big can and labled bear spray (Kevin the bull's owner, had brought it back from Montana where he had hunted, they take a dim view on shooting a grizz without having large bleeding holes in your body first). Anyway the bull had an attitude. It was raising a little hell and throwing it's weight around when Kevin decided it needed a lesson in manners. Within 5 minutes he had the can in his hands and gave the irritated critter a full shot to the face. Like flippin a switch "irritated" was replaced with "irate" and the bull went nuts. If it wasn't for a tractor we sought shelter on we would have been hambuger. When the bull got tired of trying to climb onto the tractor with us it ran through an electric fence and into the side of a shed where it got caught in a roll of woven fence and broke a front leg. The beef wasn't the least bit peppery, but it was so tuff you could break a tooth on it!

firstly it would be Indian, THAT is hot food
and it works because bears are predators, not worth expending the energy on something your not going to eat.

And depend on their nose for that food, so...
Oh, and they aren't ill tempered farm animals, that are used to people.

This Isn't Hard

Great Scott!! First thing, stand up, make yourself as big as possible, yell, shoot your pistol in the air if you have one, then watch the black bear run away and you can get on with your day. If you are trying to kill a black bear because it is "snooping" around you need to have all of your firearms taken away. This is all said presuming no cubs. I've photographed and filmed bears - both grizzlies and black bears since college in Montana (30 years), this has always worked with black bears.

SHoo Wilbur
you're trying to bring logic and knowledge to a bear thread
These things are all about how big of rocks they have in their head,er.. think they have in their shorts

And what type of MAN CANNON will properly blow a bear to kingdom come... never mind they will probably just end up chew toys.

Logic, KNOWLEDGE, and say, trying to do other things than just wound a bear and piss it off, and then have to explain to the F&G, that are crawling up your backside, why you're not an idiot who should be locked up....

that rarely makes into these threads.

I shoot dozens of grizzlies every summer. With a camera. Sometimes I shoot them from as close as 15 yards. I don't approach them, I just let them walk up to me as they fish. They're aware of me because I show myself to them so they aren't surprised. Sometimes I have a little 12 gauge coach gun, but armed or not I have pepper spray.

Bears are pretty easy to get along with if you don't surprise them.

When hunting with two guys we always used one rifle and one shotgun. At a close range , moving coyote, a shotgun is easier to hit with and is also good against larger critters. Most hunters already own a shotgun.

Shadow - I'm new to THR so I don't have many post's, I'll try to do better:) Also, I'll try to keep logic to a minimum. I'm just saying there are very simple alternatives to killing a black bear simply because he's being a pest, and yes, it does take some stones to be able to do it. As the website states - I'm trying to take the "High Road" here, no reason to kill an animal just because its in the way.

I do like Mr. Beer's coach gun suggestion, compact and can be rigged to a pack pretty easy.
