I have a Springfield 1911 a1 that is a NM serial number my father bought me during high school to compete in local IPSC matches and just because it was so cool at the time. During this 12 year time frame it has shall we say wore many hats, for a few years it was a standard 1911, then it turned in a poor mans race gun( nothing speedy about it), then a weird race/CCW piece, then for the last 4 years its lived as a parts robed monster in the safe.

Its now at the point where it will take on its last form for the keeps. I took a cratex wheel set and De-Horned/ melted all edges of the slide and frame to save money. It will be my daily carry piece and range toy so I want something that will not cut my hands to pieces. I am sending the slide on Monday to Heinie Sights for the installation of the classic target sights, then to Clark custom guns for hopefully a new match barrel and bushing and a slide to frame tune up. I would like your opinion of whether to have the front strap checkered at 20 LPI. I have a Kimber Target 45 with a checkered FS but its finer and I like it just fine, but i don't ccw it.

Checkering is a very individual thing..

I prefer extremely aggressive (25lpi on 1911s RTF2 on Glocks, etc.) I live in a very hot and humid environment so I want something to stay put no matter how much I am sweating, etc.

Daily carry piece and range toy? Skip the checkering.

Checkering is great for competition, long defense classes, war, etc. etc. But just eats shirts for CCW. The GC ''Frag'' checkering is my favorite for a CCW. But I think that requires a built up forging to create. I don't think you can cut it into a finished pistol.

I’ve been carrying this for over 12 years and it doesn’t eat shirts. I don’t carry IWB, maybe that’s a different story. I do use an open cover shirt though.

I reckon it’s like @tarosean said, “checkering is a very individual thing”.

I've had skateboard tape on this RO 9mm for years. I tuck the tape under the grips so the ends don't come loose.

Same thing but on Brownells. For about $10 you can try a checkered front strap and see if you like it enough to get it permanently done. It slides in right under the grip panels and is quite easy to put on.

Pretty sure I ordered mine either from them or Midway. Feels like real checkering even. Stainless was like $3 cheaper, so dummy me put the stainless one on a black gun. Which looks stupid, so I ordered stainless MSH, beavertail, slide stop, safety and mag release button. So my $3 savings didn't go very far.
