Which .40 NOT a S&W, Beretta, BHP, or Glock

Ditto the HK USP40 which I used to have and wish I still had. I’m glad I still have my Sig P226/40.

I would also include the Walther PPQ and P99 AS in .40S&W

I have owned like 5 or 6 P99 A/S models in 9mm over the years. In 9mm, recoil is not bad. But, they do have a bit more felt recoil than most other 9mms. I wouldn't want ne in 40.

The PX4 in 40 and the Beretta 96 are my two favorite 40s.

P226. The p229 is good too and was purpose built for the .40 but I have ever liked them. The grip is too thick and short for my taste.

H&K USP is another good one.

Or if you want the cream of the crop, the FN Forty-Nine.

I had a P-229 Classic that I sold. Same reason, grip was way too fat. A friend has a P-226 that I like a lot for a full size pistol. P-30 is a nice one also if you like the funky decocker. I like the Sig controls better. I have two P-239's I like them so much. USP grip reminds me of a 2x4 but if someone gave me one I'm sure I could learn to love it. I like the HK45 but you don't get to choose 9 or 40.

I really love my SIG P229. Before March of this year they had gotten pretty inexpensive on the used market but I have no idea what they go for these days.

Looking for 1 more .40 to add to BHP, PX4, and S&W.

Prefer DA/SA but would consider a striker fired. Wadda ya think?

Price would be a consideration and so is used (most of my pistols were purchased used).

Don't need a carry gun, prefer "full size." What's a nice under-rated 40s&w for a range toy?

What you have excluded, pretty much leaves HK, SiG, and CZ, or clones/copies of said pistols.

The Walther P99 AS is one of those guns that I just like to shoot regardless of whether it’s 9mm or .40S&W. The forty has more felt recoil than the niner but recoil is no big deal for me. If I find another nice used one at a good price it’s coming home with me and I don’t care what caliber it is.

I really like my FN FNX .40 and my non railed frame P229. The FNX was a night stand gun that I paid $425.00 for last year. The 229 was bought new in 94-95.

Cz Shadow 2 ticks all of the boxes that you mentioned.
Cz Ao1-ld.
FHN Fns40 long slide. (Dirt cheap if any are left)
Dan Wesson Dwx.

The Glock 35 is one of the best pistols ever made. I'd reconsider Glock. Especially for a range toy. Add some Warren Sevigny Comp sights,a Dawson mag well, and Dawson mag extensions, and you have a pistol that rocks USPSA limited, against $5000+ 2011's every weekend.

While I don't have any experience with them if I were looking for a DA/SA .40 I would probably look at the Sigs. I have been lusting after a P-229 for a while. Before Covid I was very tempted by the LEO trade ins that CDNN seemed to constantly have. What held me back is I don't really need one & trying to make sure Mama & the kids are taken care of. Sometimes being responsible isn't a lot of fun. I have a Ruger P94 that meets your criteria. It is the only DA/SA pistol I have owned so I don't really have anything to compare the trigger to. If you were to get one of those I would suggest looking for the decocker only version. I just don't like slide mounted safeties though it might not really matter much for a range gun.

I think the Taurus TH40 would be the ticket. I bought one to be an inexpensive nightstand gun and it quickly became one of my favorite range toys.

I would suggest looking at the Bersa TPR or the discontinued Thunder Pro HC. Budget priced but outstanding build and reliability.

XDM 4.5 10mm.

I shoot 40sw out of my unmodified 10mm XDM.

A real unicorn if you can find one, would be a CZ40B. I had one, was a joy to shoot, best CZ trigger out of the box I have ever pulled!

I’m happy with my current .40s:

H&K USP

Walther P99

I waited years to get the Walther but really like it. It’s one of those guns that, to me at least, feels a little odd in the hand when you’re dry firing at home, but feels great when shooting.

I owned a P226 in .357 and .40 that worked well , too, and would have no hesitation to recommend that, too.
