As some of you may know (I'm just occasional lurker here) my family want to make a move to USA in the future. There is a lot of factors behind our decision. Today, however, I want to pay your attention to the one of them – the best suited for this forum.
I want to share with you my own observations about the RKBA for the law-abiding citizens. I have a little bit different perspective than most of you, so I hope you will find it interesting.
I don’t want to put here too many examples from my own life, but some of my experiences will be very useful to highlight the main purpose of this letter.
Everyone of us is sometimes a little bit lazy and not always we are ready for one more step in the right direction. One more step in the name of our freedom and in the defence of our own rights.
So often we can’t realize that small concession from the wall of our rights will lead us to the collapsing in near future. It’s the straight way for losing the chance for our grandchildren – the chance for free and undisturbed decision about their safety and safety of their families.
15 years ago I was in the middle of communistic paradise. Now you can hear my voice from independent Poland. Independent, but not as free as it should be.
My country so hard experienced by the history didn’t do anything (like for example Finland) to increase safety of our borders and citizens by securing the right to keep the arms.
I’m from the family where people lived from the work of their hands. Thanks to them I finished good studies here. Like every man in the family I was in Army. It wasn’t for too long, but long enough to became reserve officer.
Because of the health problems I finished my service and retired.
Some time ago I started my own business and one of every-day activities in my work is money transport from point A to point B. The same hours and route in the dangerous neighborhood. Nearly every bank, post office and gas station in the area was robbed by the gunmen.
I consider myself as a responsible man who never broke any law and always paid the taxes. I was sure I would receive my gun license without any problems, but I was wrong.
I passed all mental and physical tests required for application.
Police refused it and gave me following reasons:
1. „you have not been attacked yet" (!!!),
2. „your application was insufficiently motivatedâ€,
3. „you are not in danger, because the police will protect youâ€.
I don’t know, maybe I could have better chances for the license as a dead victim of violent crime?
I’m not sure about it and I don’t want to check out such possibility, but I know one thing. It’s a "normal" practice here.
In Poland the right to keep arms is reserved and divided between police, prosecutors, judges and politicians. They are well armed and often secured by a large number of bodyguards with automatic weapon. They are safe.
They gave us in the past some hope – one gun in every house to secure family and property. They kept that word. How?
We can have without a license a black-powder gun made before 1850 or modern replica of such weapon...
Isn’t it great?
They used the double standards here. With Glocks, Sigs, Berettas in their holsters they made such parody law for us.
Communism destroyed humans' minds here for many generations – now and in the future our government will know better than me what is good for me and my own security. What is even more strange – it’s a popular way of thinking all around Europe.
The second large and well armed group here are criminals – no doubt here. They shooting at law-abiding citizens without hesitation and any fear of danger. They know well – there will be no armed opposition.
Some citizens in desperate act of insubordination are armed illegaly (especially in the countryside) – just in case. Such practice is furiously persecuted by police and courts.
So, what choice we have here? We can gently wait for the fast death from BG’s hands or we can make a move to the country where government respecting the right of the citizens for self-defense. I prefer the second option and I want to pay my taxes is such place.
As soon as possible I will join NRA.
Now, if you can understand in how comfortable situation you are, don’t be too optimistic.
Perfect example for you is Great Britain twenty years ago.
England started banning registered semi-auto and pump long guns from the homes of licensed gun owners. How it finished? I’m sure you know.
There is only one force in the nation between that vision and continued freedom. That force is you!
Banning of some of your rights now will lead you into the corrosion of your Constitution in the future.
I strongly belive that you all should support the NRA before it will be too late.
I also belive that my dream of living in real free country came from my Americans friends.
There is also one more thing that’s waiting for me over there. Good, old 1911 from my freedom-loving friend from Texas. When I will take this gun in my hand I will not let anyone to put their hands on my right to keep it.
Sorry for my English, but I'm still working on it :)

Best regards,
Adam

Adam, thanks for your great letter. Given what you describe, the Polish revolution against tyranny is not yet finished.

Is there any chance that the Church or unions can get involved in RKBA issues?

Welcome to the USA.

I wish they will be interested, but no. It's just a small group of people like me. IMO it's because of critical financial situation in many Polish families (when you don't have enough money for food you don't think about other problems) and the other reason is connected with communism - for 50 years they told people that gun is bad thing (armed people are difficult to control for the regime) and many of Poles still strongly believe in this. Just my opinion.

Adam,

Thank you so much for your letter. I was moved by your writing and sharing of experiences.

I wish you the very best and sincerely hope you do make the move to the USA.

Moderators: can we sticky this for a bit? Perhaps even add to our Library?

Good reminder to not take for granted what we have here in the US. Good reminder to NOT be complacent in continuing to be ever watchful, protective of the Freedoms we do have.

Adam, if you settle anywhere near where I live in Atlanta I would be proud to have you shoot a few magazines through my CZ-75. It was made closer to where you live than where I now possess it. It's a shame you can't have one to defend yourself.

I'm afraid many people do take our rights for granted in the USA. It's good to see that not everyone hates Americans out there.

Message received....loud and clear! Thanks for sharing with us.

If you end up in the Washington DC area I'd be proud to share a lane with you.

Adam ... good to see you again. I well remember that great photo you posted some time back. I'd say your English verging on excellent!!!

I am in a sense an ''escapee'' from UK - my prime reason was and is the dear woman to whom I have been now married 4 1/2 years - but second to that I have been glad to once more indulge my passion for firearms, having had that thoroughly stifled back in '97.. Further to that, the ability to carry legitimately - back in UK it was not exactly too legal! ;)

If you stay in touch with THR and come over - I'll all but guarantee that there will be someone not too far from your chosen domicile - who can help you on the way - in many respects but also in particular with shooting activities.

As ever, the criminals win .... and will always be armed. :(

I wish all Americans could read your post. I wonder how many would be ambarassed at how much they take their freedoms for granted, even after seeing what has happened to so many countries throughout history. These examples ignored, I am afraid that most people will be complacent enough until it is almost or already too late.

Adam,
If you are coming to these parts I'd like to meet you and would be honored to shoot with you. Just one thing, if you are coming to Texas, come hungry. =)

Rabbi, your point about historical episodes of atrocities in Poland is taken.

However, to extrapolate the deeds of a few 60 years ago to the entire populace of a country in the present is inappropriate.

I am a second generation American.

If my grandparents had not escaped from their various countries throughout Europe I would not be here.

I hope you make it over to this country, while it has its problems you have much more control over your life here than anywhere else I have been.

Great letter, Adam. Your English is just fine. Hope you get to come over soon. We could use more patriots like yourself.

This letter is something that Al Gonzalez should read.

Adam, if you ever make it to western Arkansas, you've got a free day at the range with me.

hillbilly

Adam - if you wind up in the Phoenix area you'll have a place to stay for free until you find a house/apartment. And someone to go to the shooting range with.

If you do take me up on the offer, just give me a bit of advance notice to get the room ready.

You're already a fine American. Good to have another brother in the ever present fight for our rights.

Adam: You will be very welcome here. You're more American than most Americans. ;)

The Rabbi: Did it occur to you that the letter was written by an individual, and not a society?

If you do make it over here and you get homesick just let me know. I'll take you for a tour of New Jersey and it'll be just like being back in a good ole Communist country.

Thank you all my friends. We still working on our move (second year in row we played on visa lottery) and with the help of our friend from Northern Arizona who is also working on our green cards through the employment way we have some chances. We will see what future will bring for us. I will keep you updated for sure :) All the best for you.

Rabbi, I don't know what your point was (your post was deleted), but I'm open on civilized discussion about every topic. Just for your information - thanks to my big family I'm a "mix" of Polish, Ukrainian, Jewish and German blood. If you have some problem with me (I don't know what kind of problem), just behave like a matured man. It will be a pleasure to learn about your point of view. Thank you.

Adam

Adam, should your travels find you in the Pacific Northwest, feel free to let me know.

I will be glad to take you to the range. Between myself and a few other folks, we can provide enough arms and ammunition to let you have a GREAT time. I, personally, would love to take you to the range as many times as you could stomach it.

A fine home-cooked prime rib dinner awaits you and your family, as well.

Welcome!
