how do you no if you have the newer mini14 or the older one i bought a mini that i thought was on of the new ones thats supposed to shoot tighter groups. this gun aint no better than the one i had as a kid. i think i might have been douped. yes it was new in the box and from a reputal gun shop. at least i think they are.

I wouldn't blame the gunshop. Go to rugers website you can run the serial number there and find when your gun was made.

The new minis have a SN that starts with 580. You might check to make sure your gas block is even. I have two 580 series minis and both had gas blocks that were not on straight from the factory.

I evened them up before I ever shot them and have no complaints on how they shoot. After all the bad I had read on the internet I was pleased with my rifles.

I have found the Mini 14 and Mini 30 start shooting all over the place when the barrles heat up. I think they are pretty but, poor mag change and barrles get hot fast, and they do not hold a tight group

The new mini14's have tapered barrels. The 580 series includes both non-tapered and tapered barrels. If the barrel is like this D===D=== it is a thicker tapered barrel. If it is like this D======== it is the thinner barrel.

Go to perfectunion.com. They have a lot of good info and accurizing tips for the mini.

the SN starts with 197. thats not good is it . the place i bought it at new i wanted the new and improved mini. and it was new in the box.what tiped me off was the front and rear sights are diff. i had it way to long before i figured it out. so there is nothing i can do about it now. ill be looking to do bizz. with someone else.i should have done better reserch. i read all about the improved mini just never looked at a pic of one or at another store. i thought the guys at my gun store would take care of me. took care of me alright. ill be doing my bizz some where else now if this is an old type mini PS new in box 6-14-08

1:9 twist.

The newer ones have a 1:9 twist, but they were manufactured with different twist rates in the past. IIRC, some older ones have a 1:10 twist or a 1:7 twist.

is there any way to no what twist your rifle is. the paper work that came with the new gun is no help

If you can't find the twist rate stamped on the barrel, you can just call Ruger and ask. The phone number is 603-865-2442. While you're at it, you can also ask them any other questions you have about your rifle.
