Make it easy on yourself: go to a shop that has both and hold them both. If possible, rent and shoot them both. Pick the one that feels better to you. Both are very reliable pistols. My personal pick is the XD. YMMV.

Because of the age of your pistol, it is most likely a "Series I", however an internal extractor is not the indicator of a "Series I" pistol. Technically, there is no such thing as a "Series I" Kimber. They just called any of the newer designed pistols (with the Swartz firing pin safety) Series...

You are wrong. S&W has, and has always had (on ALL of their semi-auto pistols), a reliable external extractor.

If you go with an XD-45, you will not have a rust problem, as the XD-45 has a melonite finish, which is similar to Glock's tennifer finish. If you can't decide between a Glock and the XD, go to a shop and just hold, or, better yet, rent and shoot them both. I bet I know which one you'll like...

My XD-45 ACP Service Model is the best handgun that I've ever owned, shot or carried. I *highly* recommend it. BTW - ALL XD-45 ACP models come with the melonite finish, except the BiTone models, which have a stainless steel slide.
