Fixed rear sight
What you are looking at is a fixed rear sight, which is a "trough or a groove" milled down the top strap of the revolver. It's designed for either a weapon that will be put through adverse conditions.....i.e. the S&W or Colt Model of 1917 .45ACP revolver, S&W Model 10 M&P...
It's "T-grip" adaptor.....probably a Tyler or a Pachmayr.....it's made out of aluminum.
By the way, that is another very fine of example of a firearm made by S&W!

Very Nice....yet, another example of a fine handgun by S&W! It's a round butt, unless my old eyes are fooling me.

Bears, handguns & Alaska........
Having lived up here in Alaska since 1968 and selling firearms for a living, I am asked this kind of question just about everyday. If you are looking for a handgun for "bear protection" I would consider the .357 Magnum in a revolver or the 10mm in a pistol...
Try a few boxes to see if your Colt:cool: is reliable with 165gr HS, if it is and you are comfortable with a light-for-caliber projectile, then go for it. I prefer the 230gr. myself.

North American Arm's Guardian .380 or .32 NAA, if you prefer a revolver ( ), as I do, take a look at the S&W Model 940 in 9x19 with a 1 7/8" barrel:cool: .
If you can buy it for $359.00, then I would say it's a fair deal - if it's 95% or better condition. As for it being rare, the 3-inch version would be the model to look for - according to the "Blue Book of Gun Values" only 2,500 were produced.

High Performance .45acp Ammo-
Hello, just for trivias sake may I mention that the FBI once used a 230 hardball load manufactured by Super-Vel that chronographed an actual 1005fps from several 5" 1911s in testing.
BTW, you young bucks ought to realize that Wil Terry is the load development...
Hello all, I'm a new Glock 23 owner and honestly confused with all the available bullet weights to choose from for self defence.
Suggestions PLEASE!
Many thanks group!
