100 Arrested at Wal-Mart Construction Site By MICHAEL RUBINKAM, Associated Press Writer
53 minutes ago

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Federal immigration agents detained more than 100 workers at a construction site for a new Wal-Mart distribution center, authorities said.

The workers, who Wal-Mart said were employed by a subcontractor and not by the retailing giant, were detained Thursday on suspected immigration violations, said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Marc Raimondi. They were being taken to Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers for processing, he said.

More than 50 federal immigration agents, joined by the U.S. Labor Department, Social Security Administration and state police, raided the construction site near Pottsville, about 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Wal-Mart spokesman Marty Heires said the company would cooperate fully with federal authorities.

"We have written contracts with these subcontractors requiring that they follow all applicable local, state and federal employment laws," he said in a statement.

At least 120 illegal immigrants, most of them from Mexico, were detained, Schuylkill County Sheriff Frank McAndrew said. He said he began investigating the site and contacted federal officials after getting complaints from local tradespeople.

"You've got a situation here where illegal immigrants are coming into Schuylkill County and taking (local union workers') jobs for eight bucks an hour. They are working for poverty wages, and creating unemployment because our skilled tradesmen are out of work," McAndrew said.

In 2003, a raid of 60 Wal-Mart stores in 21 states led to the arrests of 245 illegal workers. An affidavit claimed a pair of senior Wal-Mart executives knew cleaning contractors were hiring illegal immigrants. The retailer agreed to pay $11 million in March to settle the case but denied senior executives knew of the hirings.

Wow a LEO that is actually doing something about local immigration issues!!:banghead: We must all be dreaming I can't believe the feds actually did something about this!

Gotta love it! Dissension in the Democrat ranks - labor unions versus illegal immigrants. It'll be interesting to see how this one plays out. I'm betting the Sheriff got a campaign contribution from some of the local union PAC's, and is expecting a few more when he's up for re-election.

IMHO they were forced to by the local power groups, not on their own accord as demonstrated by the following quote:
"You've got a situation here where illegal immigrants are coming into Schuylkill County and taking (local union workers') jobs for eight bucks an hour. They are working for poverty wages, and creating unemployment because our skilled tradesmen are out of work," McAndrew said.

Around here, they can just waltz to find illegals. No need to head to a walmart. :barf:

some people smell elections coming on

Good photo op, I'm sure.

If they want to really stop the influx, they know what to do. When I see the full array in action I'll be a believer, not before.

When I read the thread title, I immediately thought 'Seattle?' Are you paying attention, Jammer????

Yup, R.H.-Every time an immigrant crosses the border, he heads for the local Wal-Mart.:neener:

Great. Walmart via their subcontractor (notice the isolation) now has to hire local union help for a decent wage. End result - the price of bread just went up $.02 in all Walmarts.

this is a massive opportunity for labor unions to boost their stock. I don't like unions but I'll take them as an allie against the invasion.

You mean there are construction workers somewhere in this country that are NOT illegal?

Sure can't find any down here in Texas.

NO ONE will EVER stop illegal immigration by raiding the workplace and deporting illegals. Any one who thinks this is the way is mistaken.

To prevent such activities the fault must be placed on the employer. If the government imposed a mandatory 1 year prison term ON THE EMPLOYER for each undocumented worker found working for an employer, illegal immigration would be resolved. It is the employer that needs to be punished, not someone who comes across the boarder to make money for their family back home.

Also, anyone thinks the contractor would have hired union workers does not understand the idea getting the construction performed for lower costs. Union workers would easily double the cost of labor of the Wal-Mart complex. (why do you think they hire and exploit immigrants). This is not a public work so the only wage that applies is the federal minimum wage at $6.25 (or whatever it is.)

Sorry, nothing new here and it has no impact whatsoever on immigration.

That doesn't fit in around here. Vinita, Oklahoma has a Wal-Mart Supercenter and the employees are all pretty much local white people. And the customers are pretty much the same. Working rural people looking to save some money.

Exactly SW. Wal-Mart Hired the subcontractor. Wal-Mart might not be directly responsible for hiring the illegals, but you can bet your 'Always Low Prices' that they knew exactly what was going on. That's one reason you outsource...so you don't get your hands dirty doing stuff like this...

But, since they outsourced that, their hands are clean for now. :fire:

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But. this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people."

a few personal thoughts on the above.
1. Only the children born of legal aliens should be allowed automatic citizenship
2. Allowing for the above any alien that is in the US for more than 5 years with out gaining citizenship will be deported to their native country
3. Fluency in the English language should be required inorder to become a US citizen.
We need to take back the United States Of Amercia from the cry baby feel sorry for every one else liberals.

A good take, Sheldon, although reconciling points 1 and 2 appear to be a problem.

I wonder how many of the people here who are faulting Wal-Mart for the contractor's poor judgement personally checked the citizenship of the workers who built their house, the citizenship of repairmen who work on their house and the mechanics who repair their cars. If you don't verify the citizenship of everyone you do business with, aren't you in fact doing the exact same thing Wal-Mart is doing? How often do you personally verify immigration status before you hire someone to do something for you?

I live next-door to an apt. complex. A few weeks ago, the manager hired three guys to do some roofing work for him. I couldn't help but overhear that they only spoke spanish. I made a phone call, and two days later they were gone without finishing the job. No regrets...

Hah! Before I had all the windows replaced and siding put on my house, I told the contractor he'd never collect a dime from me if I saw a single illegal alien on the job. He started to laugh about it. I told him I'd recently moved from the People's Republic of California, and was all done putting up with illegal aliens.

I've pulled out of a couple oil change places because people weren't speaking English. I take my car to a local shop that does good work and makes a point of mentioning all the employees are Americans.

When I needed a locksmith, I mentioned I'd cancel the order if an illegal alien showed up to do the work.

Wal Mart is my shopping destination of last choice. I don't buy Tyson's chicken.

Unlike the federal government, I put my money where my mouth is.
