I would like to have a 10mm autoloader with a red dot, capable of shooting pretty warm loads. If you were buying one now, what would you get? I really like the 1911 platform, but the difficulty in putting a red dot (that is not high above the bore) makes it less appealing. I am wanting one for deer hunting. I currently use a Ruger single action in .41 Magnum, but the clicks when I cock the hammer has scared more than one deer, so I am looking for other options.

I'd think the "easy button" would be the Glock G40 MOS https://us.glock.com/en/pistols/g40-gen4-mos

As much as I don't personally like Glocks (they don't point well for me and I don't like the manual of arms) they do have the answer to your problem of wanting a 10mm self loading pistol and should at least be considered. A Glock is going to be a cheaper solution and will undoubtedly work right out of the box.

I know it is the "easy button", but I have never liked the way that Glocks point for me, either. I actually had a Glock 20 years ago and sold it. I think I would prefer the Smith, unless someone has a good reason to not prefer it.

I don't own a Glock, and probably never will. However, ...

Since we're specifically talking about a 10mm gun, the Glock G40 has been around for quite some time and if there were any issues, they have probably been worked out. The M&P in 10mm, may turn out to be great, but it is a new offering from S&W.

The G40 gives you a 6" barrel, while the 10mm M&P longest barrel is 4.6".

I suspect the aftermarket support options, at least at this point, are going to be greater for the Glock.

I'd pick an M&P .45 over a G21, but if you're choosing a 10mm, at this point at least, I'd pick the Glock.

One of my rules for life is: 'Don't buy the 1st model year of anything more complex than a hammer'.

Question, how much is avoiding a Glock worth to you?

How hot of a load are you talking about???

180gn doing 1325FPS hot

or HOTTER?

I’m going to list a few facts about me so that you will know that my choice is not brand biased, but from experience.

I’ve been shooting 10 mm since the introduction in the 80’s and have accumulated quite a few tens.

I am a 1911 guy at the roots.

By looking at my Sig collection you would think that I’m a fanboy, but most Sigs leave me disappointed. I think most are overrated.

While I have a handful of Glocks, I don’t shoot them, even my semi custom G20 10mm. I find them mediocre, not enjoyable/fun.

As of now, I find the Sig 220 10mm to be a beast! I have the Legion, not that it matters. It does a great job at taming the 10. I’m not a fan of the 45 220, I never shoot the 2 that I have. But I was pleasantly surprised by this 10 mm 220. It’s a winner for me.

If the Sig is not in your budget, my second choice is the XD. I was surprised how much I enjoyed that 10 mm as well. Mine is the 4.5 model.

I am very curious about the SW MP 10 and XD 3.8.

OP wants optic ready which neither of those are.

Glock 40 or EAA (Tanfoglio) Witness Hunter would be my choices. The Tanfoglio requires a mount that goes into holes in the frame for an optic, but it's not a big deal..just costs more. Not sure if the Hunter is still offered, but they are wonderful shooters.

Looks like two threads were merged. When I wrote my answer there was no mention of optic. I did my write up and didn’t post till a few hours later due to photos. I did see another thread about an optic, but didn’t put 2 and 2 together.

Then again, I could totally wrong and confused. Wouldn’t be the first time.

the slide on my EAA witness wonder 10mm has the slickest slide EVER! In slick… I mean I can’t rack it with some tape on the slide. I’m going to have it milled for a optic

Gah, 10mm ACP autoloader that's optics ready that isn't a Glock...

Getting the slide milled is reasonable given the 'not a Glock' constraint. Going off a quick google search I'd do a Ruger 1911 thing in 10mm. Ruger's pistols can usually take a beating and the money saved can be used for the gunsmithing work. Just wring it out before you modify it so Ruger will still fix any bugs.

Not only does the Glock 40 MOS work right out of the box, you also have the option of trying those silly 9" Lone Wolf 10mm barrels.

More oomph with less bang, if you're into that big - bore revolver vs. 10mm Auto stopping rabid charging alpha male grizzly bear in body armor kind of thing

I own a 40 MOS (and a G20) in 10mm and I love them.
I have pretty large hands.... I could see the double stacked 10mm becoming a grip problem for smaller-handed individuals, but maybe not.

I have the Alpha wolf aftermarket barrel, the primary reason being I'm a hand-loader, and the brass from the greater chamber support of the Alpha barrel prevents the "bulge" in the brass near the case head. I also enjoy the benefit of shooting cast lead through the conventional rifling of the aftermarket barrel.

The amount of firepower with the 10mm in hand, with the 15+1 capacity, the reliability of the Glock, and the accuracy, shootability, etc. of the MOS platform with optic puts this system in a class of its own, there may be a few others....

that’s such a COOL setup! I want one!

It feels great in the hand and eats everything I’ve thrown at it so far. Even my over max 800X loads with 180 gr XTP’s. Only hiccup so far is the Hex factory red dot shuts off after 2-3 rounds so I sent it back for warranty replacement. I’ll give it another try and if it still does it, I’ll move on to a Holosun.

Here it is absent the red dot and with a OLight.

I have the Glock 40 with a Electronic Sight and i love it. Tames a lot of recoil even in the heavier Loads.

Springfield OSP 10mm XD-M. Unfortunately discontinued according to the website but you may be able to find one floating around.

I can't believe it! SA actually discontinued all of their full-size 10mm handguns at a time when 10mm is more popular than ever. What in the world are they smoking over there?? And the XD-M model is completely dropped in all calibers? I know they aren't the most popular handguns, but, I've never heard a bad thing about them. I bought an XDS years ago and it is a great little pistol. My dad has one of the XD-M 9mm pistols and loves it.

When I got mine I chose the 4.25" barrel and started thinking I should have bought the 5.25" barrel.
This solidifies the decision!! Should have bought the 5.25".
Shoots great but the longer barrel would have at least made it different.
