Excluding Glocks since I am not a Glock fan, how would you rate the 10mm's in the market and are there any coming out with any new ones I should be aware of? I am in the market for one.

Regarding the Colt 10mm's I have been informed some are shooters and some are not because the will shoot the frames and guts loose since they were designed as a .45's. True or false? If so Which ones are shooters and reliable?

What are all the 10mm's? Rate from 1-10 please, 10 being the best.

Bren 10mm 10?

Current 10mm production is limited to the following options:

Witness 10mm's - Several choices the most common being the standard size and compact steel frame versions. Similar to the CZ.

Kimbers offering 2 1911 10mm's.

Dan Wesson has made quite a few models. It looks like they may be making 2or 3 in the future.

The two Glocks you said you did not like.

SV will still make a 10mm if you have the bucks and the time.

The issue of the 1911 patterned guns beating themselves to death on the 10mm is basicly BS. There was some non functional frame cracking on the origional Delta designs and Colt just removed that material from subsequent production.

The only Colts I would not shoot are the very rare limited production models and that is only due to collectablity rather than wear issues.

There have been numerous other models made at one time or another. The Bren 10 being the first and most collectable. Due to the lack of spare parts I would not consider them shooters.

Other manufactures have included:
AMT
Smith and Wesson
Star
Springfield
Wyoming

The best shooting are the Glocks in my opinion.
The 1911's are all nice with the Delta Gold cup being hard to beat - You can expect to spend over $ 1000 for a nice one.
The Smith auto's and the Megastar are like tanks and handle the power of the 10 with no problems.
The Smith revolver options are nice if you like wheel guns.
Unless you have the collector bug I would stay away from the AMT and the Wyoming.

I agree with Myself about Smith especially. And with the Smith revolvers you can also safely fire .40 S&W, or so I'm told. (Better get other opinions than mine, as I have no experience with the 610 revolvers.)

And, for goodness sake, forget you even heard about a Bren Ten if you're considering a 10mm for shooting!

Best of luck!

What do you want it for?

Best value in today's market - trade-in S&W

Best revolver S&W 610

Best all around Colt Delta later production with recoil system replaced with aftermarket

Most likely to catch the eye - a sacrifice Razorback or Kimber (but some may offer these at collector prices they don't merit instead of the used gun shooter prices)

The one I want - Dan Wesson Global Hunter pattern with a 6" slide - strongly rumored to be scheduled for more production in 2006

The S&W 1006 turns full-power 10mm into a low-recoiling range round. I can't say that for full-power .357 in a revolver of the same weight. If you can pack a pistol of that size, there's no compromise. If I could ever find a 4" model (1066, 1076) I would fall over myself getting to the counter and sprain my elbow pulling out my wallet.

I actually prefer my 4566 for that reason, plus the ammo is cheaper.

Devonai -

Let me know if you're serious about a S&W 1076, I know a local shop near me that may still have one NEW IN BOX.

I loved my 1076, but have since gone to 1911's and Glocks. I've learned that, in general, I don't like double action triggers.

But dang, that 1076 was accurate and sweet to shoot.

Since I own 5 10mm Autos...

Wtness: Excellent guns for the money. avoid the 10 round magazines (if you can) they are problematic.

S&W 610 revolver: Excellent! There is none better for hunting and general shooting.

DW Razorback: I will NEVER let mine out of my sight! This is the pistol that Colt's Delta Elite should have been!

IAI Javalina: I must have gotten a good one, because mine shoots well.

Glock Model 20: I like it. It is currently perfoming "Nightstand" duty. Need I say more?

Happy New Year.

Scott

i know you said no glocks...i have a G20 that i paid $565 for...i would't have anything else otherwise...YMMV second choice would be the CZ-dan wesson. nice...;) but at 1200 give or take, it's out of my budget's allowance...never shot one though, i just go by what they say about it.

Why do my posts keep getting moved? This is the 3rd forum. I posted a general 10mm auto question and it says it has been moved.

Love my S&W 1066. Picked it up second hand. As has been noted, the S&Ws run like tanks. Very solid, and recoil is quite managable. Sorry, Devonai, you can't have mine!

WRT forum migration, a moderator probably thought you'd get more a response to your question in the autoloader forum rather than the general handgun forum.

Beren, part of managing my addiction to buying and selling pistols is refraining from weapons that aren't sitting right in front of me. Sure, I could order everything that I want from somewhere, then keep it in a paper bag in my shopping cart next to the empty cans and newspapers.

Thanks for the offer, though. :D

I went with a Witness due to the affordability, steel construction, and supply. S&Ws are a matter of luck stumbling upon one locally, but then you don't get the nice high capacity. I had to special order mine, but you can't beat 15+1 capacity of 10mm.

If you don't have a 10mm yet, I would suggest the the Witness to start off with. It's very affordable, then if you fall for the round get something different to experimate with.

Remember:

The 10mm is an extremely versatile round. Properly loaded, there are few that can match it. It is not for everyone.

I have been shooting the cartridge for fifteen years, and have at least four of the very best handguns ever chambered for the cartridge, (without going to a fully-custom built pistol, that is.)

If you invest in a Dan Wesson/CZ Razorback, you will not find yourself wishing for a better pistol later. Bob Serva has "done his homework" as far as the 10mm Auto cartridge is concerned. The only way that you could possibly "improve" the Razorback, is to:

a) Install a 22-pound progressive recoil spring,

b) install a EGW stainless, flat-bottomed firing pin stop, and

c) Install a Wolff 10% "increased power" mainspring (read: hammer spring.)

This will allow you to shoot any power-level of ammunition that you please through the piece, without causing any undue wear upon the pistol's fram ore slide.

May God guide you in your purchase process.

what is the going "street" price for the witness?

My 2 cents.....

I have owned Colt, Glock and S&W autos in 10mm. My favorite and the only one I currently own is the S&W 1076. This pistol I favor the most especially with hot rounds. I don't have experience with the Witness but I'm curious and will probably own one at some point.

I bought my witness 10mm for $285 with 5 mags and sold it for $350 with 5 mags and a supersight and spare springs. Great gun, one of the few I made money on. Accurate reliable and overall a great gun, just with a Custom Baer 10mm and an RZ 10mm, why waste a perfectly good round of 10mm in the Witness? Thus I sold it.

More 10mm support

Glad you're looking at a 10mm. You're not partial to Glocks and there are always reasons we prefer one brand over another - to each his own. I've had a Glock 20 for about 11 years - it is large and it does have a large grip. While I also have other semi autos and wheel guns - Beretta's, Colts, S&Ws, Rugers - 9mm's, .45's, .357 Sig's -- .22, .32, .38spl, .357, .41 mag, .44 mag. if I had to "jump and run" I'd be taking my Glock 20 (with a ghost ring sight) and a bag of ammo - as everyone has said, it can do so much. I've not used a 10mm in another brand, but I'd encourage you to try a mag through a Glock - at least once.

Witness Tangfoglio

I have a Witness Tangfoglio and I like it so far.

Review for Witness 10mm

EAA Witness (10mm Auto)

The EAA Witness 10mm is an all-steel, double action pistol with a basic blue finish (with a flat silver "wonder" finish available). Don't let the cheesy website and excess of bikini babes in the ads fool you; the pistols are actually made by the reputable ISO 9001-certified Italian company Tanfoglio. EAA is merely the bonehead American distributor of their products. I owned one for about a year, and in most respects it was an excellent handgun. It was definitely a good value, only costing about $300.

A word of warning to potential EAA Witness purchasers: make sure your pistol doesn't have the old magazines! The old magazines (recognizable by their black plastic follower) could not be loaded to the full 10-round capacity without a hammer and made the pistol a jam-o-matic. The re-designed magazines have a bright red plastic follower and function perfectly. With the wrong magazines, this pistol's reliability goes from 5 stars to about 1. New magazines can be ordered directly from EAA if you need them for a reasonable price. Don't expect the drone answering the phone at EAA to know anything about this; just trust me on this one.

This pistol's main virtues are durability and reliability. Put simply, the Witness is built like a tank. It is an enlarged and reinforced variation of the already very strong CZ-75B design that can easily take the punishment of full-power 10mm loads. Mine would feed and fire any ammo I could stuff into the magazine without a hitch. The standard blue finish is not particularly rust-resistant, but their "wonder" finish version is supposed to be quite tough. Its ergonomics and pointability are also very good, to be expected from a pistol based on the outstanding CZ-75B.

Nice to see the Witness 10 fans come out of the woodwork!

The easy on the budget Witness is one heck of a gun. Could only be better if it was made by CZ.

This is False. The very first batch of Delta Elites had some frame cracks and these should have all been fixed by Colt. The Delta Elite pictured below is a relatively low serial number and has well over 20,000 rounds through. This was my IPSC gun ( in another configuration) for close to 10 years.

For a new purchase, I also vote for the DW Razorback (on the left below). It is the most reliable and best built 1911 I have ever owned.
