A physician in Western Arkansas was arrested for possession of 110 machine guns (actually, some or all may be legally registered, news story and maybe the cops too were unsure how many if any were illegal). but he also had grenade launchers (type unknown) with 6 "canisters of grenades" whatever that means. One "canister" was said to contain 98 grenades.

Sounds like quite a cache.

What makes the story interesting is that a few weeks ago the head of the medical review board for the state, the panel that punishes doctors for bad behavior, was nearly killed by an explosive device planted in his driveway. My first thought it was done by some doctor seeking revenge and now we have this MD with these explosives. And yes, he had faced punitive action from the review board recently. Cops aren't saying he's involved in the attack, but I think many folks are saying to themselves "two plus two equals..."

Paper said the MGs were worth a million dollars. Wonder if they will be melted? The local PD would probably love to sell them and keep that kind of money. Some PDs in AR do sell confiscated guns and some do not. Some don't sell pistols. No idea what policies may be in place on MGs.

Reminds me of a local story from oh about a month ago near me.
A guy bought the contents of a storage unit at auction. Opened up his new purchase and found an arsenal of military munitions. Grenades, mortars etc...

As you said "news stories and maybe the cops too were unsure".

Who's to say the "grenades" aren't golf or tennis balls for his launcher?

I am getting tired of the media spinning the finding of a bb gun with a search warrant into the finding of of a "assault rifle".

Or its just as likely there is NO story. He had a couple dozen LEGAL class III. He also had a few dozen pistols, few dozen shotguns, and a few dozen other rifles. (some of them black powder)
He has a few 37mm "gernade" launchers. (which I understand are legal but am not sure as I don't care) he had boxes of INERT gernades, smoke gernades, other LEGAL practice gear.
There was a attack/it was known he had some full auto (legal) so they do a raid and go for MAX negative publicity.

For posterity...

Ark. doctor arrested on hand grenade charge

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A doctor who has been sanctioned by the state medical board was arrested after grenades were found in a field near his home, but authorities say the arrest is not tied to a recent car bombing that seriously wounded the board's chairman.

Dr. Randeep Mann, an internal medicine specialist from Russellville, was arrested by federal agents on a charge of possession of unregistered firearms. He is expected to remain in federal custody at least until a bond hearing Monday in federal court in Little Rock.

An ATF affidavit says agents interviewed Mann in February after the car bomb in West Memphis critically injured the head of the state medical board. Mann showed them his grenade launcher at the time.

But Austin Banks, a special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says Mann's arrest this week was not tied to the investigation into the February 4th car bombing that wounded Dr. Trent Pierce. Pierce remains in critical condition at a Memphis hospital.

Banks said the arrest resulted from a complaint to the Pope County Sheriff's Office about grenades found in a field near Mann's residence.

The affidavit says a canister buried on the property contained 98 grenades, the kind used in grenade launchers. ATF searched the property and found 5 more canisters, similar to the one that was buried. The affidavit says agents found two grenade launchers in a safe in the basement and 110 fully automatic machine guns valued at more than $1 million located throughout Mann's house. The affidavit says the ATF could not determine if 17 of the machine guns were legally registered to Mann.

a canister buried on the property
Note to everyone who thinks burying anything on property connected to you won't be found during a federal investigation.

ATF searched the property and found 5 more canisters, similar to the one that was buried

They have advanced tools to create images of anything under ground in combination with metal detectors.
BURYING things does not hide them.

He had a couple dozen LEGAL class III
Which are now illegal federal property.
There is a finite number of legaly registered select fire weapons.
Everytime a man with dozens of them becomes a prohibited person and they are confiscated that number shrinks.
They also shrink every time someone breaks one and throws it away, or pass away and they do not end up in the hands of someone with an NFA stamp for them.

That is often the case. Whether they were all legal, or even if he was actualy possessing a single illegal item.
It is all about creating a certain image that sells a prosecution and causes other 2nd Amendment supporters to distance themselves from them.
They will say anything necessary for that, and people just like the guy arrested will crucify him buying right into the propaganda. Absolutely sure they are nothing like the law breaking nutcase they read about in the story.

By mentioning they were buried it automaticly makes it look bad and suspicious. Even if it was just some guy burying his legal stuff in anticipation of an Obama ban.
By mentioning he had machineguns, whether legal or not, it adds to the desired image.
By mentioning explosives or "grenades", even if they were perfectly legal chalk rounds, it adds to the desired image.
Then of course if he actualy had any single thing that was really illegal it automaticly causes the assumption that all the other exaggerations are true and accurate.

There is a war against the 2nd Amendment. Even if they cannot pass new legislation they can fund new ATF activities and crackdowns just like in the early 90's. They will answer to Eric Holder and Obama.

You know folks, sometimes the ATF actually does arrest criminals. I know that some of you want to make everyone questioned by the ATF into a hero, but this guy had GRENADES stored in his home and buried on his property. Maybe the MGs were legal. The paper said that at least some if not all of the guns were legally owned. But GRENADES?

How do you justify keeping GRENADES and GRENADE LAUNCHERS at home? Why would anybody want to have such things?

And I still think this guy is suspect numero uno in the bombing attack on the man heading the board that sanctioned him. If it turns out he planted a bomb under the man's car and nearly killed him is he still your hero?

Just wondering...

Well, 1, a person might be fully and completely trained in the use of such things. A person might want to collect sub-caliber training weapons, too--just winds up being as complicated.
2, A person might be collecting items related to military or police service, too.

Worst part is that we are having to filter this through the press, who went to the trouble of distinguishing "fully automatic" machine guns (thus begging the question of the "non automatic" MG presumed to exist).

Damn, if I could afford it, I would like to have a dozen or so. I would love to have a Panzer tank also. To each his own.

I could see drawing the line at nukes. But this is just my opinion. :neener:

Oh for crap's sake! There goes a bunch of MGs off the registry. Dr. Dumb just had to break the law and posses illegal grenades... thanks to this idiot, MGs are now slightly rarer...

Oh ok. Still though, we don't know if they were real grenades or just dummy rounds or whatever. I'd like to think that he's innocent until proven guilty.

Why does it have to be justified?

BTW, people pay good money at Knob Creek and other shooting events to fire such weapons. Why? Because they're fun. Legal one's are great investments as well.

Actualy it sounds more like the guy had several legaly registered NFA items, the sign of a "gun wacko"! :scrutiny:
When they decided to investigate local registered "gun wackos" to see if any of them were tied to the type of attack a "gun wacko" might commit they ran across this guy.
He was one of only a handful of registered "gun wackos" in the area.

They then realized this "gun wacko" had a grenade launcher, potentialy even a legal registered one as they chose not to arrest him.
However a light went off in Special Agent Hero's head.
Every single round for such a thing needs to be seperately registered with a tax stamp to be legal.
Even if the guy legaly has the weapon along with many other registered NFA items, his ammo is probably not legal, even if he thinks it is!
"Gun Wacko" is thinking he is in the clear, the items he showed them are legaly registered at high expense, and special agent hero is satisfied, off to find the real criminals that resulted in the investigation originaly.

Special Agent Hero and his hero buddies however made note of it. Little did "Gun Wacko" realize that randomly stumbling onto people like him is what they dream of.
What they depend on to highlight how successful they are and that they still deserve massive federal funding in the future. What helps to impress the new administration and others responsible for thier funding.

Special Agent Hero's report caused the Hero agency to aquire a warrant, get thier expensive equipment paid for by tax payers, including sophisticated underground imaging equipment and metal detectors ready for use.
They then paid registered "gun wacko" a visit long after he thought everything was already resolved.

"Gun Wacko" now sits in jail, awaiting a long prison sentence and his legaly registered NFA collection now permanently in the hands of federal LEO. Permanently removed from peasant society where they had posed great danger.
Special Agent Hero saved the day!

wait, I'm trained with Nukes, does that mean I could Own them? lol. But to answer the question on why he needs grenade launchers, .......the gubberment has them, why can't we? Oh wait, I forgot, the 18yo, wet behind the ear, barely passed High school kid can carry them in war against 50 year old AK's and rocks and sticks, but we can't have them against a equally armed government

There was a Doctor blown up in his car one morning in Memphis. It caused ATF and other agencies to hunt.

Most of the stuff owned by the Doctor apparently was legal but the agencies have thier own reasons to take the actions that they take.

I know one thing... if I hear a Thunkthnunkthnukthunk of a M203 Im going to bury myself very deep and pray that those frags dont land anywhere near me or home.

Expect alot of this sort of thing to happen.

If you know an ATF agent, or call one your "friend" realize they aren't. They are your enemy and they will screw you over given the first oportunity. This guy might have deactivated grenades, then again, he might have active grenades.

Doesn't really matter. The ATF it appears just wanted to try to get his MGs and didn't care how.

Do your best to try to have the ATF ignore you. Especially if you are an NFA weapons holder. (much more dificult). Stay on your p's and q's.

So the ATF "didn't care how" they got his MGs according to you. You know this because you saw it in your crystal ball? How do you know this? Fact or pure guesswork?

Meanwhile, the good doctor twice gave up his ability to write narcotic prescriptions (but kept his medical license) because 10 of his patients OD'd and died. Sounds like he needs his license pulled.
