Md. Boy, 15, Charged With Killing Family

By KASEY JONES

COCKEYSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A 15-year-old boy fatally shot his parents and two younger brothers as they slept, then spent more than 12 hours with friends before returning home and calling 911 to report that his father was dead, police said Sunday.

Police went to their suburban Baltimore home and later charged Nicholas Waggoner Browning after he admitted to the slayings, Baltimore County Police spokesman Bill Toohey said.

Browning was charged as an adult with four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of his father, John Browning, 45; his mother Tamara, 44; and his brothers Gregory, 13, and Benjamin, 11.

The teen had not been getting along with his father, police said. On Friday night, he went into the house after other family members had gone to sleep and shot each of them. His father's handgun had been in the house, police said.

After the slayings, he threw the handgun into bushes near the house, police said. The gun was recovered, Toohey said.

When the friends took him back to his house at 5 p.m. Saturday, Browning went into the house and came back out to say that his father was dead.

Browning called 911, telling the dispatcher that a "45-year-old male was lying on the couch with blood coming out of his nose. He was not breathing," according to charging documents. Officers were sent on a "call of a cardiac arrest."

Police said Browning's father was found in a ground-floor room and his mother and brothers were dead in upstairs bedrooms. There was no sign of a confrontation, Toohey said.

The tall, gangly sophomore at Dulaney High School in neighboring Timonium was denied bail; a bail review hearing was scheduled Monday. He was being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center in a special section for juveniles.

Toohey said he didn't know if Browning had a lawyer.

Even if convicted as an adult of first-degree murder, Browning is too young under state law to face the death penalty.

Two of Browning's classmates drove past the family's house Sunday afternoon and wept when they learned from reporters that he was charged in the slayings.

"It's hard to believe someone could do this," Brooke Kebaugh, 16, said.

Liz Lazlawbach, 17, said Browning complained about fighting with his father, but "not about anything violent."

The grounds of the two-story home were neat and neighbor Mike Thomas said the Brownings would even pick up trash along the street. "These people would do anything in the world for you - just incredible people," Thomas said.

Neighbors called each other throughout the night to discuss the killings, Thomas said. He said one of his sons had been in Boy Scouts with one of the Brownings' sons and was devastated when he learned of the deaths.

About 50 people - mostly teenagers - gathered for a candlelight vigil in front of the Browning's house Sunday night. The crowd stood in silence for about ten minutes. Some cried.

John Thibeault said his son Kyle went to school with Benjamin and they were both "traumatized" by the deaths. He said his family locked their doors Saturday night, fearing a killer was on the loose.

Thibeault described Nicholas Browning as "just a regular, normal kid."

John Browning was a partner in the law firm of Royston, Mueller, McLean & Reid in Towson, focusing on real estate law and commercial and corporate law.

The partners said Browning was an accomplished lawyer.

"He was also a person invested in his family and community," the partners said. "He led his local scout troop. He was a leader at his church. In short, John Browning was a great man. We will all miss him very, very much."

The Brownings' Boy Scout unit, Troop 328, meets at Timonium United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Frances Dailey said Sunday that the troop's leaders did not want to talk. He said John Browning was "beloved and well revered. I'm told this is not the kind of family that this could happen to."

Counselors were to be available Monday to meet with students at Dulaney High, said Charles Herndon, a county school spokesman. He declined to say where Browning's younger brothers went to school.

(This version CORRECTS that Browning spent more than 12 hours with friends).)

There are some evil people in this world and unfortunately, they are all related to somebody.

My brother in law has a great family, 3 kids, but one of the kids is pure evil and even at the young age of 11, I'll go on record as saying he will grow up to be a killer.

how incredibly eerie that someone that young can accomplish such evildoings.

as this is a gun forum, i feel compelled to ask how, exactly, the family members could have defended themselves against the miscreant in their midst when a) there was no noise to wake them and thus alert them to the presence of an intruder, and b) they were asleep. i must admit that i am bothered by the fact that unless the young man's weapon of choice featured a silencer, there was a lot of noise--hence, the younger children must have been warned that there was something seriously wrong. and yet, being so young, would they have had the presence of mind to fight back? the report indicates there was no confrontation. this case is kind of bizarre.

:(

bloodedsky, you bring up an interesting point. He would have had to kill both his parents then his two brothers.:( They probably couldn't have put up much of a fight.

Why did the boy kill them? Was he on drugs or something?

I watched a documentary about Columbine. One of the things I remember most about it is that one of the killers dad's, after hearing about the shootings, immediately thought his son could be responsible for it. He even called 911 to tell them about it.

I thought this would be a shock for me but somehow I can see it happening. Take away responsibility, compassion, accounability, and caring you have the makings of this type of tragedy. You have both parents working to maintain a lifestyle, kids being raised by school and videogames, and parents having to start saying no due to a recession, it was only a matter of time.
To make a handgun quiet all yo have to do is add a pop bottle stuffed with tissue or a pillow.

tragic story. i would be surprised if the boy was not on drugs when he did this.

a lesson we can all learn from this is the awesome responsiblity of owning a firearm. my mother's boyfriend is ex-LAPD, and at one time he and one of his children (who was abusing drugs) were having a very difficult time with one another. he made a point to secure all of his firearms, and even building a locked cabinet to keep his ammo in. he knew what this person was capable of when high or coming off the drugs he was abusing. this person has since cleaned up his life and is a productive and upstanding member of society.

it is not clear from the story how the boy got the gun, and it is not the father's fault that the boy committed such an evil act. i mention this only to underscore our responsiblity as gun owners, and that protection from harm means keeping guns out of the wrong hands as much as keeping them in the right hands. my prayers go out to this family

The Bradys are going to jump all over this one.

Does it really matter if the Bradys jump in?Do they have to be linked to every shooting that happens in the USA?
Should we really care what this slowly dying outfit thinks? Why give them any more recognition.Their days are numbered.Let them sink away into the sunset along with the cheating ,now losing New England Pats and another losing Brady.
Long live the perfect '72 Miami Dolphins!
Sorry,couldn't contain myself!

sad , sad ,sad

Im just tired of reading about tragedy in the news, why, r.i.p for the passings of
family , just sad.

I posted the article on TFL as well.

Shootings seem to be more random/senseless lately. Getting tired of it.

and it is not the father's fault that the boy committed such an evil act.

Knowing MD, they'll villainize the father and the gun.

Ironic the Browning name
Only if you don't understand the meaning of irony. Or think it's like rain on your wedding day. A free ride when you've already paid.

It's pretty pathetic when something like this happens and it is immediately posted here in the context of "Oh no, what will Brady do?"

Is there anyone else who wishes the folks on this board would discuss shooting a bit more and randomly posting every news article that mentions a shooting or a gun a bit less?

Acting Out

It will be interesting to see -- provided they'll reveal it -- if this kid was already the subject of counseling activities, and whether there were prescriptions involved.

"Nice, normal" kid, doesn't "get along" with his dad, and then lights up the whole family?

I feel there is more to this than meets the eye.

Especially in light of his remorseless conduct following the incident.

Oh, and just a little note . . .
His father's handgun had been in the house, police said.
. . . but evidently NOT SECURED.

My daughter had some low-grade friends over at our place when she was still living with us. I took the precaution of a) not telling her I had pistols, and b) keeping ALL of them locked up when not actually in my possession. I didn't worry about her doing something, but her OpSec stank, and her friends ripped her off more than once.

If you have a "child" in the house and the relationship is tense, leaving a pistol unsecured is pretty much a non-starter.

Or a no smoking sign on your cigarette break.
I hate to see these stories on this forum. This behavior is rare and when it is spread virally around the internet it makes people uneducated about firearms even more weary of them. If the kid hadn't had access to a gun he probably would have stabbed his entire family.
What a sucky story.

Some have already questioned about whether someone would have fought back. But can you actually imagine fighting back and possibly killing your own child? Self-defense or not. It's psychology. The shock alone of a child turning on their family like that would likely be enough to make one unable to move, much less fight back.

If any of the other family members were awake when the events unfolded I would think they would be in pure shock, such that "fight or flight" would no longer hold true. After all, when "flight" kicks in you run home, where its safe. Well, where it is supposed to be safe. And when "fight" kicks in you never imagine having to fight a family member in such a situation. This really leaves you stuck; nowhere safe to run to and an inherent inability to fight back. Really sad.

Just a few years ago there was an incident around here where a son got a couple friends together and attacked his parents at their work, a family run business. Killed both parents, apparently over money.

Some things in this world I will simply never understand.

I find it wierd that none of the neighbors heard the shots, or atleast none of them reacted. No one called the police after hearing at least 4 shots, spaced out, and likely one of the family members screaming. It just seems like its missing alot of important details.

Pretty sad though.

Very tragic. My wife read the article and noticed that Tamara, the mother's name, is Soviet (Georgian), so is Nicholas and Gregory. Benjamin is not, but John could have named him. I'm just speculating that Tamara may have been USSR-born and maybe just Nicholas and she immigrated. We'll just have to wait for further details on the family.

hen spent more than 12 hours with friends before returning home

Going to be interesting if interviews of these friends get released to the public to see how the shooter was behaving, and if he said anything to the friends.

And I also wonder why he was able to kill four people in the house without any of them trying to escape or dial for help.

Hey! Winchester, the Dolphins had a good season at least huh? In 1972 anyways..

my worry is that someone, somewhere, is going to take all the gun violence cases and use them for Heller, to try and justify the removal of civil rights for law abiding citizens...

wait, too late..

I bet he was on ritalin, paxil or some other drug....

Seriously, I bet he was and it caused him to flip. Almost all young kids are on the crap now.

I'll bet that like most adolescents, his brain was still developing and not fully capable of inhibiting sudden strong impulses. Whether or not his decision making capacity was influenced by drugs -prescription or otherwise- is completely baseless conjecture.

Blaming pills is no different than blaming guns. True, the former does directly mess with brain chemistry, but it doesn't turn a person into a murderer any more than the latter.

You don't hear that everyday.

Crazy story. Makes you think (if you have troublesome kids).
