Sure, you should be able to do it in order to be familiar with your weapon.

It's really pretty simple and directions can be found on the net.

I like to tinker with my guns and replace things like the trigger, so knowing how is very important.

1911s are super easy to take down to the basic parts.

I've done it to all three of mine. One I Gunkoted, one I changed all the springs to a brand new Wolf Service Pack, the other was just a detail clean and lube.

That part of the enjoyment of owning a 1911 . Takeing it apart. Not really all that hard .Many a 7th or 8th grade educated country boy did it for years in the field in Military. Browning made it easy to take apart and clean or repair.
Nice thing about a orginal 1911 with out all the unessary guide rods allen head grip screws and other toys. You could do full take down in field with no tools other than gun parts themselves acting as tool..

Takes maybe two minutes to break it completely down, and I'm slow. Watch the AGI 1911 video, the guy does it in maybe 20 seconds. Knock out three loose pins, pop out the firing pin. The parts are big and easy to take apart and put back together. I like to really clean my guns now and then, and it's nice to know how it REALLY works.

I generally end up taking every gun I own down as far as they'll go, sooner or later.

This gets a bit interesting, every now and then, 'cause I usually take 'em apart without any kind of guide or instructions... but then, most guns come apart and go back together in pretty much the same way. *shrug*

One way or the other, I've never run into one I couldn't disassemble and reassemble without much problem. ( Some have taken a bit longer than others though. ;) )

Every couple thousand rounds they are completely stripped, cleaned and put back together. Between shooting and building a couple I have probably completely stripped a 1911 type 50 or 60 times in the last year.

I broke down my Kimber after 1100 rounds or so.
It wasn't really very dirty inside.

I left it broken down for about a week, because I was debating whether or not to put an Ed Brown MSH in.
Frugality won in the end. Anybody reccomend a decent checkered MSH that isn't $60?

I've stripped my 1911s down to parts to where I thought I wasn't going to be able to reassemble my guns...I also had my smith watch me do it explaining what went where & what did what...I learned alot that night

Scheduled maintenance.

My range guns get stripped once a year, my carry gun twice a year. Everybody who owns a 1911 should at least do it once, just to see the genius that was JMB.

I don't do it every time I clean, but I break them down completely for cleaning fairly routinely.

I have completely dismantled several 1911s and replaced and refitted numerous parts. Compared to a SIG or even a BHP, the 1911 is very easy to detail strip and reassemble.

Nothing to them really, any good armorers video/DVD and or an old military exploded diagram (Schematic to some) and some inexpensive tools and you can do it easily.
When I took one apart 15 years after leaving the service it was like I could hear the DI riding me all over again.
Can't wait to get that feeling again, no .45 in the arsenal at this time but either a build or an RIA are in the works soon.
