I shoot two 45-70's, an NEF carbine and an IAB Sharps replica. To date haven't loaded anything over the pressure levels of the loads listed in Lyman's for the Trapdoor Springfield and have found some decent loads. While these loads are pretty "stiff" in the lightweight carbine I was wondering whether thses two rifles were rated at pressure levels any higher.

I did load a few rounds with 300 gr. JHP's and 43 grains of IMR 3031 (max for the Trapdoor) and after a few rounds found myself flinching. Just curious more than anything.

Thanks

Thanks for the info on NEF....anyone have any knowledge about the IAB Sharps Replica?

While the Sharps is a strong design, some are available in 30-40, I would not push them. The 45/70 is a heavy bullet design. Think of it like throwing sledgehammers, you don't have to throw them real fast to get the job done.:D

PS That NEF will kick the heck out of you with Marlin loads. Too light a rifle.

Thanks!

I and my shoulder thank you. I've pretty much found the load that seems to work best, 38 grains of IMR 3031 with either 300 JHP or 405 grain cast.

I have a 45/70 built on a Siamese Mauser action with a 24"bbl.. Best load for it is 52gr of the same powder with a 400gr soft point. Can not be shot from the bench, too painfull! Bad ju-ju for porkers.
