.45 ACP for CCW use

Tucker "The Answer"

I have a Tucker Gunleather "The Answer" leather/Kydex hybrid IWB holster. I carry my Kimber 3" 1911 in it with a Liger gunbelt.

Comfort is the best I've owned. Wearing it fr 12-16 hours per day is no issue. I've even taken naps with it on.

Springfield Ultra Compact ,45 (PX9701L), it's a 10-round high capacity, with one spare magazine. Heavy, but it carries well in a HighNoon, Split Decision, tuck-able holster at the 2 o'clock position.

I carry my Taurus PT145 in a Hume H715M clip-on IWB. On occasion, I can be found with a S&W 457 in the same brand and model holster, albeit fitted for that particular gun, of course. As always a good thick belt is essential for satisfactory carry.

What make and model are thinking of carrying? Does make a difference.

Since concealed carry is a 4-letter word in Ca, I'm talking in hyptheticals...
Hypothetically, I would carry my mod 60 most, but I have had occasion to carry other guns. As far as 45 acp goes, I recently picked up a commander sized 1911 that should work well for this (much more compact than my USPs and my gov't model 1911 :D ). As far as leather...I haven't decided yet, but my preference is IWB or even SOB

When I cross the bridge into MO, Les Baer Stinger in a Sparks SSII.

Once our CCW is up and running, it will still be the Baer.

Kimber Ultra CDP.

I use a standard Bianchi OWB holster which should work fine 5 months out of the year... 7 if I don't mind cooking in the heat a bit with a bigger shirt I suppose.

I also have a cheapo Uncle Mikes that I originally bought for a compact S&W semi-auto probably 7 or 8 years ago. The Kimber fits in it well, it's comfy, holds it close and is OWB which is my own personal preference and with my frame I concealed it well this summer.

I also have a .38 snub (642) and I do carry it instead of the .45 probably 25% of the time. Certain situations and stupid carry laws dictate a totally concealable firearm sometimes. My .45, even the small Ultra, will print occasionally espec considering I only do OWB. Don't knock the .38spl... there are some good loads for snubbies. I don't feel undergunned with my 642 and the thing virtually disappears (appearance and weight) where my .45 simply will not.

5" 1911 in a Galco C21B.

The holster is an open topped pancake style. Two reloads on my off side. Very slim package, even though I'm not.

At the moment, I carry a 5" 1911 in a milt sparks summer special II. I want a VM2 someday, but the SSII works well enough at the moment.

Most comfortable .45 ACP

I have carried the following .45s for CCW:

Colt XSE
Colt Series 70 reproduction
Colt WWI reproduction
Kimber 5"
Kimber 4"
Kimber 3"
XD-45 ACP

Of all of these, 1 single pistol stood out as being physically the absolute most comfortable, fast to draw, solid grip in the hand and tack-driving accurate: the Kimber Ultra Eclipse. Unfortunately mine went defective. When it worked, it really worked.

I couldn't carry it for the first about 6 months due to multiple returns to the factory. Finally after 3 returns to the factory, they got it right. But, the trust damage was done. While it ultimately became 100% reliable, I just couldn't trust it anylonger. I persistently wondered when that external extractor was going to fly-off again. When I carried the U.E., I usually had either an additional .45 for a back-up, of a Glock 17 for back-up.

Come winter weather, heavy clothes, few cartridges can out-strip the .45 ACP.

Ruger P97 most days but sometimes according to where I'm going, dressed or just my mood, a Ruger P85 or S&W model 10 and for church, weddings, funerals or functions where having a gun might upset some of the more gentle people, a little Taurus 85.

I don't carry the 45 as much as I'd like to because of what I wear but when I do it's the Kimber Tactical Ultra II in a Don Hume JIT belt holster.

I carry a parkerized Colt 1991A1. Nuthin fancy. The only mods to the pistol are a trigger job, MMC adjustable sights, polished throat/feed ramp and Pachymar rubber wrap around grips. It'll eat anything I feed it, and is reasonably accurate.

In the summer I carry it IWB in a Milt Sparks Summer Special. In the winter,
IWB in a Milt Sparks Executive Companion.

Springfield V10 Ultra Compact in a Bianchi Minimalist holster, or a Fobus paddle holster.

Kimber Ultra Carry in...

1. DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster (made for the mini-Glock)
2. Miilt Sparks Watch Six (Poor man's VMII)

or, Kahr P45 in
1. DeSantis Nemesis (yup, same holster, also fits my PM-9 and my S&W j-frame)
2. High Noon IWB (made for a Glock but fits the Kahr like a glove)

14 rounds of .45, because if I need a firearm, I want to be sure I come out on the winning side. XD45 in a High Noon held by a 1-1/2" Aker gunbelt under a large Hawiian shirt or a "shoot-me-first" vest.
