The Ruskies make 9MM amoror piercing ammo for military. It is an exposed, steel tip/core round. Said round weighs in at 65 grains and departs the barrel at 1967 fps (an obvious +P+ round denoted as 7N31. I read about this in the GUN BUYER'S ANNUAL PRESENTS #40, "Special Weapons: Military & Police". Or see www.guns-weapons.com

This ammo is said to pierce helmets and body armor? Hmmm. Just sounds like over-statement to me. That really doesn't seem very heavy, very fast, to compromise body armor? Now, a FMJ 150 grain, 30-06 doesn't compromise ceramic plates, so how can this? Or am I making a connection that isn't there, they just mean soft body armor?

The article is on page 78 if anyone is interested. They also feature MANY other extraordinary, desirable little "toys".

Wow looks really interesting. no experience whatsoever in this field, but something fun to think about no doubt... I'll have to look into it more.

Which helmet? What body armor? What threat level were those items designed for? A .32 acp will go thru a WWII U.S. steel pot.

There is more than 7N31. The 9x21 SP-10 wil defeat NIJ Level III body armor at 50 meters, when fired from that pistol or at longer ranges when fireat from this SMG

Some detais on russian AP and other specialized ammo are available at this link - just scroll down a bit

Interesting material

Thanks for the information.

Shove a ball-bearing in a hollow point and you can have AP ammo to,lol!!!and its still illegal,,hahah:banghead:

Probably means Kevlar-piercing. There's not a lot of actual armor plating that won't stop a lightweight projectile at under 2000 fps, even if it's hard and pointy.

Having said that, do keep in mind that this ammo may be intended for use in a submachinegun, in which case you might have 10 or 20 of the little bullets hitting the armor one after another. But that's still not going to make a 9mm a rifle round as far as penetration goes (even a .30-06 lead-core softpoint will undoubtedly penetrate twice the plating that a hot 9mm will).
