ok..i own .40 and .45 pistols up the wazoo.....my security company requires i carry a 9mm any preferences or best one...say within a $1000. budget..thanks for the help

which .40 or .45 do you like the best? see if that company makes it in 9mm

As much as I prefer my CZ 9mm pistols, the above advice is excellent. Which one of your current guns do you like the best, and find the 9mm version.

Still another very satisfied CZ 75B owner although I am a long time
1911 .45 ACP advocate. I'd also consider what you are already most proficient with if that platform comes in 9mmx19.

FOr Daily carry - I'd consider the S&W M&P perhaps with the
thumb safety. I fired a friend's in .40 S&W - I liked the grip and
trigger, sights and controls much better than another buddy's
Glock 19. Same Day I also fired a Sig 226... kinda weird post
firing spring vibration post shot. but accurate as the others.
I mention the M&P for daily job duties because of the polymer
with all stainless metal parts for low maintenance.

I would consider the G-19 for a couple of reasons. First of all, it's a good gun all around. Second, if this is a work gun, I want one I'm not afraid to beat up. You can probably find a USED one that runs perfectly pretty cheap. For work, I don't want to beat up the guns I really like.

i own a springfield xd 9mm i got it new for arround $540 after taxes and paperwork fees i find it very comfortable compared to a glock although have never actully shot a glock. and is also extremely easy to take apart and clean. also a huge fan of sig arms so i would recommend p226 very acurate little pricer but worth the money

Another vote for G19... get a used one with night sights for around $500~ and spend the other $500 of your budget on ammo to get used to the gun.

PS... don't worry about the 9mm not being "enough" when you are coming from 40 & 45. The 9mm is a fine defensive round with quality ammo.

Ruger P85 MkII. Cheap, reasonably accurate, 15-17 round mags are easy to find. Always goes bang when you pull the trigger. Additionally, it is well built and can be used as a club, if needed. Ambidextrous (sp?) safety and mag release. No magazine disconnect.

Just my .02.

I would highly recommend the Smith & Wesson M&P 9. Depending on the requirements of your security firm, you can get one with or without a thumb safety.

For your ceiling of $1000, you could almost purchase a full sized and compact M&P9. (according to the latest Buds Gun Shop online pricing)

I'd seriously consider the German police & military surplus SIG P6 from J&G Sales at $350 + $20 for an extra mag. It's the same pistol - except for very minor details - as the P225 and while they exhibit some holster wear, internally they're in excellent condition. They're fairly light and the German quality is first rate.

In fact, for less than your $1000 you can own two first class SIGs.

Concealed or Open Carry?

For concealed I would get the Glock 19, if open get the Glock 17 and don't look back. For about $500 it's a steal.

Can't beat a Glock 19. If your company allows you to load it with your own rounds, I would suggest Speer Gold Dots, Winchester Ranger SXTs (I think that is what it is called) or some of those DoubleTap Bonded Defense rounds.

Have you asked your new co-workers for a chance to try out their pistols, if you can't think of anything in 9mm that you already know & like?
What's the job? Are there any other requirements other than 9mm chambering? (meaning ... do you have to have a manual safety? do you have to carry unloaded/empty chamber/round in the chamber? do you have to carry on belt or concealed?)

Seriously, with a price window of $0-$1000, that's pretty much every 9mm pistol, excluding the really high-end custom jobs.

well, let's see, theres the sig p225,p226,p228,p228, all can be found used at a bargain.
any of the 9mm glocks would serve you well
the m&p 9, the xd-9, the fnp9, the ruger series is a good buy also.
then there are the walthers, pricey but can be found under the cap you set, used hk's are out there as well, a usp or similar would be a good buy.
any of these will be more than adequate for your basic pistol needs, there is no best one, just ones that fit right in your hand.

Lots of good suggestions but I'd say Glock 19. Best all around size Glock 9mm.
