That's a shame, I think the warning light would have been flashing.
It would be good to give him a break, he needs one. But, if I had to put up with that kind of obvious BS I'd probably just tell him to go try to find someone more gullible, like a 12 year old kid who still belives in the tooth fairy.

Carl...whats wrong with being skinny? I was real skinny in the Army, when that fat guys fell out, I'm kept on running...when it got over 100 an the muscle guys passed out from heat stroke, I was just fine....skinny guys do just great in military service, ever seen Sgt. Hathcock, Nam sniper or that guy from Texas Audie Murphy....ha...I met a guy here at my home town, they call him Rambo, says he was in Nam, an flew helicptors...big talker, any when I met him an he was talking alot of crap...I knew enough of the guy that he wasn't "Pilot" material, I really don't like guys like that...my brother was in Nam, an to say you were or did something you didn't is an insult to those that served...I said to him..."what unit was you with" he started to think, " What branch? What year was you over, my brother was over there too...I looked him in the eye an knew I had him."what helicopters did you fly"....AHHHHHH...all of them, I flew all they had over there, he said...."Name one..."....he couldn't...an I looked at him an turn my back on him...not a Rambo...just a Bonehead...did I mention I can't stand guys like that?

Last I heard, they were having problems with wormholes and ridiculous lockup times... something about the bullet hitting the target before the trigger was pulled... They even had one of those Savage triggers with the little sear that is supposed to keep the trigger disengaged.
Isn't it funny how it's also the latest fad. Some movie comes out and mall ninjas choose that flavor of the month. Kung Fu, Navy Seal, Green Beret, Mafia, International Hitman, and of course, "I was a sniper". Trying to act both cool and tough at the same time with comments just loud enough for everyone within 3-4 tables over to hear and be annoyed by. "Yeah...I just got back from playing in the sandbox"! That one seems to be the new favorite.
One local idiot about 3-4 years out of prison was hustling drinks at a local bar a little over a year ago. Wearing his white t-shirt, camo military pants and boots he started boasting to patrons how he had just got back from the "sandbox" and was ordered back for a mission so he only had a few days left on leave in Vincennes. He snagged several drinks before I finally told the bartender to pass around I had arrested this guy twice in the past. Once for stealing a vehicle and the other for molesting a 14 year old girl. He was quickly run off after that. Most can spot a demented idiot, if not immediately, then eventually.

We have a friend like that. Generally a good guy, and has always had our backs. But you can't believe anything he tells you, and only half of what happens around us.
Once we were traveling from wy to wendover nv. Just a little ways from SLC, ut is Kennicot, (copper mine I think) they have this super big tower maybe 150 feet high. He told us when they were on strike he was a security guard there, and they stationed him on top this tower with a fully auto machine gun, with orders to shoot anybody he saw. We called BS on him. But he was adament. I'll give it to him... he could tell a good story and stick to it. LOL Now when we go past there (15 years later) we always go... "there's marty's tower" never fails to make us laugh.

Duane Dwyer of strider knives had everybody fooled into thinking he was a scout/sniper in the USMC.When his lying partner got busted for falsifying his military record the spotlight turned on Duane and it turns out he was a clerk and jerk office type.He did earn the title of US Marine but still felt the need to lie in order to sell "high speed tools to hard core individuals".Evidently they still sell a lot of knives.

Yeah, it seems like every service member you meet out there some times were "spec ops super top secret squirrel CMH sniper" bubbas. I then proceed to ask them if they can remember the worm formula (or some other nomenclature that would pertain to their alleged "job"), because I can't. If they can't, then I take what they say with a grain of salt and usually make my way away from them. I don't choose to keep company with fakes.
Not to mention being designated a sniper in the military is not cool or fun. Laying in your own fesces and urine for several days, shivering your butt off, and eating 3 meals in 3 days that consist of MRE crackers... well that's just not my idea of a good time. When posers try to belittle that by insisting they were a sniper it really pisses me off. Mostly because I know EXACTLY how painful the work is.

I have known several people that would climb a tree to tell a lie when they could stand on the ground & tell the truth just as easy-I generally just try to be polite smile, nod & go on about my business. For the most part it just ain't worth the hassle to confront them.

Speaking of snipers, I'd like to call for a toast. My wife's ailing grandfather was a Marine Corps sniper in WWII in the Pacific before he caught malaria and had to come stateside for a while. After he recovered he wasn't allowed back into sniper duty so he spent the rest of the war driving a general around China. I didn't know this, but he's never shared any of his war history with the rest of the family. He and I have developed a close relationship, he's unloaded a lot of problems to me that he's carried for a long time. While I'm not a professional counselor, I am a good sympathetic ear (a gift I got from my Mom.) He still beams with pride any time someone in a USMC uniform is around, there's a toughness and respect there that never dies.

I have had te opposite problem
I lived in Thailand from 1965 to 1972, visiting Laos twice and Malaysia once.
I had no job more exciting job than teaching English and TKD. But many times I I have been disbelieved. People think I must have been in the CIA or some such.

---I'm guessing that is a joke...If not I salute your superior kickassness. You can make whatever crack you want about the French but I'm not messing with anyone in that was in the Legion even if they are 80 they could probably still deal out a beat down.
In my life and through the Gun bidness I have ran into countless posers. They receive as little of my attention as possible. I once ran into two posers that were comparing their individual awesomeness to each other. The funny part is while they where comparing their awesomeness there was a real deal retired colonel in the room that called them on it.

I rent apartments in a military town, and had 19y/o soldier tell me that he was a sniper while touring an apartment. I managed to keep a straight face with great difficulty.
Mostly because I know a sniper, went to high school with many years ago, and this kid is NOT sniper material. My buddy wouldn't even admit to me he was a sniper without being plied with large amounts of expensive scotch, and even then I got no operational details. Just stories about nightmares. Felt bad for the guy, and he probably wouldn't have told me what as much as he did if he wasn't temporarily out of the service when the conversation occurred. I might not have believed him if I hadn't seen his pic in a magazine article on the sniper school he claimed to have attended.

I think I know this guy - and, sorry guys, he's legit. We were both in 'nam together. We can't talk about most of our missions, but I could tell you some stories about ban ggog un and duk sayq wak. I'm telling 'ya, it was tough.
We were both awarded four Silver Stars and three Medal of Honors - the last two of the MoH were awarded to us posthumously.
