A Re-visit to "What to do if someone is kicking down your door?"

You can look carefully at the salient points of your home, neighborhood, neighbors, your ability's, experience, weapons. And a whole parcel of common sense wont hurt.

And go from there.

At the moment it is 9-23PM, I am in the back bedroom, tapping on my Lap Top, one finger! Dressing gown on, Glock 19 in the right pocket.

Paranoid? no, but I always, always, go armed, the pistol sits on the bedside table till showered in the AM, then on the belt. I have a little card in my wallet, it is in case I have an accident!

But I do not go out to have an accident, still got the wee card, and the Glock 19. I hear the two Doberman s next door have the odd Woof, Woof together, the house behind mine, over a fence, two dogs, next door but one, a young found mix, nice dog, nice Guy owns it, walks it regularly.

Walk down the street, lots of Woofs! One way in, same way out, most likely a very safe area. Don't leave your doors unlocked. I back the Jeep into the Garage, nothing parked on the drive, lights on outside all night.

So live your life, be happy.

Oldguy...I like your style. Very matter of fact.

Well here's a real-life example of the sort of incident we've been discussing. This item is from Westwood, KY:

Armed with baseball bats and a toy gun, the two were no match for a man who got medieval while defending his home.

Grant Lambert normally uses his machete for yard work, but Wednesday night at his home in Westwood, he proved it can be an effective makeshift weapon too.

Lambert's daughter and girlfriend were in the living room when robbers broke in the front door.

"It's the scariest thing that's ever happened to me," Lambert’s girlfriend Jackie Cook said. "We were watching TV, and the door just busted in. My heart just fell. Two guys busted in with masks on. I knew we was all gonna be dead."

This is probably the rarest type of robbery, where you're just sitting around the house and then, without warning - BAM! - the front door is kicked and armed masked men burst into the home. Rare, but as here, it does happen occasionally.

The owner was in the other room, grabbed a machete and came out to engage in the invaders. As often happens in 2-on-1 fights, the owner did not prevail and was badly injured. The invaders, however, had to go to the hospital due to the injuries they sustained.

From a Strategy and Tactics perspective, this is how my defense layout is structured, with various weapons in every room so that a forceful response is possible at any time. Carrying a firearm at home is not appealing to me (although I'd consider it if living in a high-crime area). Here, we see a machete is a viable HD option, as would be a sword or similar. Could have worked better for the owner in the story if he'd had a chance to get a good swing in; I suspect they'd closed to H2H range and he couldn't generate enough power in time.

Or it could've worked out better if the Home owner was armed with a firearm.. Others might dissagree with me but if that exact situation happened to me, and my girlfriend, daughter and myself were in that type of danger (robbers busting in ski masks etc) Those guys would have 9mm rounds stuck in their heads, and they might be complaining of a headache later...if they survive. Sorry, but thats just me..

Of course I commend the homeowner none the less for defending their lives and home with the means he had available..

You go out with a gun here in S/E MI---if the BG's are not armed--when you get to court---
You will be convicted of branishing a weapon--you will lose your gun-your CCW if you have one & may pay a fine.
The BG's will be sent home--usually to their grandmother. They will be stealing someone elses car that same night. This is the new America................

...kicking down your door
I think some people are losing sight of this important little detail. (that doesn't mean I will shoot until the door is actually breached -- but it also doesn't mean I'll necessarily wait until I get a good look at their shining faces and ask them what they want.)

Not losing sight of it in the least. Here in MN, simply breaking and entering is not a felony, and shooting them under such circumstances is a felony. That math is not in my favor.

What they do after entering is what determines whether I can shoot without going to prison.

What a contribution to the thread. ""

Isn't there some rule about posting a single smiley as a response?

I question the value of your input to this thread.

You give us an explanation of the laws where YOU are from and state the obvious to those who already know. You want to publicly criticize my opinion and way of thinking? Then I publicly ask that you refrain from commenting any further on this thread and any others I post in the future. I took the liberty of utilizing the great "Ignore list" feature provided to us by the website. Thank you and I wish you the best... ""

And with that happy exchange, we're done with this one now.

Anyone who needs an explanation as to why this thread was closed can feel free to PM me.
