That said there were some old WWII OSS techniques for using a Zippo as a striking tool that you probably won't find for a miniBic.

Yep. One can do the same with a Imco . *evil grin*

I was raised where one was not dressed without a knife, and a means to make fire. Oh I grew up with Zippo's, in fact one was in my dresser drawer crib, along with Case Peanut, a revolver, and all sorts of stuff...

Imco Super 6700 is another great lighter. I come up with Imco's as well, and often carry one daily.

I have a decent collection of Zippo's, but that is all they are, a collection. I don't smoke anymore, and have little need of a firestarter in my daily life. I will throw a few $0.99 Bics in the bag before a camping trip or the like. But then I'll also have flint & steel and other fire starters.

I love my zippos but I only carry one for convenience. If you need a dependable way to start a fire then you need to learn to use one of these...

I always have this on my belt.

Not really flint, its a ferro rod. A great, dependable way to start fires in all conditions.

At least have some strike anywhere matches in a good, waterproof case.

my experiences with Zippos have been hit and miss. i have one or two that have never failed me, for over ten years, and i'e had some that were complete crap; they leaked if they turned upside down, the strikers were too smooth, they dried out too quickly, they rusted, etc....

i always have one in my car, along with a disposable Bic, a magnifying glass, and firestarting kit.

Zippos?

I've recently added the scrolled fancy shamrock and the gold flowery one. Use em sometimes to light my pipes when I cant find matches or my Xikar butane pipe lighter. It sneeks off....

Folks,

This thread needs to stay on track as a use instead of drifting into a collection thread.

for everyones advice on "topping off" the zippo every day or so the problem isnt maintaining the zippo in a controlled environment like your home/everyday life the problem arises when your stuck somewhere without the ability to refuel the lighter

in that situation a standard bic lighter (or any of the sealed lighters that dont dry out) will be a better bet

from a fresh refill to empty the zippo only lights about 1-10% the amount of fires that a regular sized bic can

a zippo still has an elegance to it and holds certain statures in society they can even make a better bludgeon than a bic but as for firestarters the modern plastic (fire tupperware?!?) bic reigns supreme

Just got a new zippo because of you guys. (And a cigar, but I light those with butane)

1941 replica Chrome brushed.

I have lit my zippos after sitting for years, plenty of fluid in them. Any guesses why?

How? I have an old brass one that runs out of fuel real bad. The lid is slightly dented at the rim though.

I smoke and use a Zippo almost exclusively...I do top it off and keep a small eyedrop container of fuel in my ruck. I have never bough a flint since so many of my acquaintances use plastic disposables that I just reclaim the flints when they run out. Even though my current Zippo has a broken main spring it doesn't leak because I don't over fill it. It runs on just about any flammable liquid and it was my 50th B-day present from my kids.
