Owen - I don't even know if we are talking about the same thing anymore? I'm so  ;)

My point is:

The company known as "Armalite" today had nothing to do with the design or development of the AR15\M16 platform.

The company named "Armalite" that did design the AR15\M16 was actually a Division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation and was established in 1954 . I don't know exactly when the Armalite division started designing the AR-15 but they sold all rights to both the AR-10 and AR-15 to Colt in 1959.

In 1983 Fairchild sold their ArmaLite Division to Elisco Tool Manufacturing Company of the Philippines. Eilsco was not able to make a run of it and due to a number of issues and closed the doors of their Armalite division in 1987.

In 1995, the owner of Eagle Arms, Inc., Mark Westrom, purchased the rights and remaining assets of ArmaLite and they now sell AR platform weapons in much the same way as Bushmaster, Olympic, etc. do.

So, it is my opinion that the only company that can come close to claiming they produce "real" AR-15's is Colt. Everybody else, including Armalite, just produce clones.

Back on topic....

I actually know of a true "prototype" AR-15 type rifle for sale. It is the original tool room model MCR100 (Multi-caliber rifle series 100) from Cobb Manufacturing, Inc. This is it:
