are my gun tastes odd for a 22 year old?

Here is what I have now:

1. Remington 870 Wingmaster, blued wood, 20" cylinder bore barrel with rifle sights, My most prized long gun. This has hardly been fired since it's creation sometime in the '70s.
2. Remington 870 Police Magnum, 20" IC barrel with rifle sights, Speedfeed stocks, sidesaddle. This is my "tactical" gun I put together before I found the joy of bluing and wood stocks.
3. S&W model 66-6 3.25" barrel .357. This is my daily CCW that I wear from dawn to dusk
4. S&W model 66-2 4" barrel .357. This one is new-in-the box on it's way from a dealer in Wisconsin. I can't wait to get it, will become my primary carry piece.

Here is what is in the near future:

1. S&W J-frame, for pocket carry when I dont feel like lugging around a K-frame
2. Springfield M1A National Match. I want one of these so bad I can taste it. Nothing feels better than punching holes in the center of the center of a bull'seye 100 yards away, with open sights. There is no better weapon for this than an M1A. It is also nice to be able to stop a deer, or a man, or a vehicle up to 500 yards away, and the .308 is great for this.

Perhaps I am different from other 20-something shooters, all my gun buddies laugh at my choices, as they all shoot glocks or HKs or Sigs and ARs and Binellis and "tactical" stuff like that. However, while we are shooting pistols and they are printing a 6" pattern all over their target 10 yards away (using their HKs, sigs, and glocks) , and I let off 6 shots out of my smith and wesson into the center of the center of the chest of the sillouhette target, they stop running their mouths and let my choices be.

I've had glocks and sigs and AK-47s and other assorted "tactical" type weapons, but I just did not shoot them as well, and that is what counts. The only weapons I'm really interested in owning are S&W wheelguns, Reminton 870 (wingmaster and police only, no crappy express models) shotguns, and M1A or M1 Garand battle rifles. With these few systems I am covered from concealed carry to home defense to SHTF to deer hunting and beyond. What more do I need?

I'm 24 and I don't find that odd at all. To each his own I guess. In my opinion, gun ownership goes through stages. Some weeks I'm all about putting 10 bullets through one hole and some weeks I'm about putting 10 holes in ten targets as quickly as possible.

As for your love of wheel guns, I've recently been bitten by that bug. Not only are they great, they really make reloading easy not having to chase your brass all the way down the range.

Go against the grain if it makes you happy. Personally, I don't like semi's. For me, I can shoot my S&W 686 all day. There's nothing better than cold steel draped against my naked slim body :p seriously though, age has nothing to do with it. I prefer to be in a gun battle with my 686 that I can shoot very well than a semi where I'm not as accurate.

Go with what ya like. When I first got involved in shooting, I really only like semi autos. I bought a wheel gun and quickly sold it thinking it just wasnt for me. Since then, the mood has changed. I still prefer semi-auto rifles and pistols, but have a newly developed wheel gun interest. For shotguns, I have a couple of pumps, but would like to pick up a couple semi-autos also. I also generally only like black furniture over wood, however, in the very recent past, I have started to take a special liking to wheel guns with very nice wood grips.

My tastes can change, but hey, their mine. Do what makes you happy. So far, you have a decent little collection especially considering your age.

Be safe

I also have a great time shooting my 686. It's just a great gun with superb balance that feels great in the hand. I find it to be far more accurate than the glocks I shot in BLET.

Whatever floats your boat.

You've figured out what works for you, some people never even figure out what side of the bed they want to wake up on all their lives.

You're one step ahead of the game.

Dude, you are totally headed the wrong direction. Your tastes are wrong, all wrong. You have to stop, especially with the .357 wheel guns. You need to send me the entire collection and start over.
Immediately.
It will hurt me worse than it will hurt you, so lets get it over sooner, rather than later.
I will PM my email to you.

I have an itch for a wheelgun right now, but I generally prefer semi autos. I love my semi rifles too. I'm only a few years older than you are, and I can understand your collection completely. You're not weird :) Or maybe we both are :uhoh:

I'm only 20, and my collection include:

HK USP Tactical 45
HK P2000 9mm
Glock 22
Ruger MKII
Benelli M1 Tactical
16 Gauge bolt shotgun
SKS
AK-47/Mk-90 (not sure... norinco made)
AR-15
old springfield meteor 22 bolt gun
Marlin model 60 22 rifle
and 2 crappy italian pistols... one in 22 short, one 380.

More on my wish list.. but I'm taking a break... need to settle down and fire what I have.... unless I can find a good outdoor range. Then I'll be looking for a few more rifles... and can always use a few more pistols. Revolvers are becomming interesting.

Cyanide

when I initially started collecting, I had the whole tactical mindset as well. all of the sudden wheel guns, lever guns, all the things I previously used to turn my nose up to.... began holding a certain appeal for me. I still keep my share of "tactical" firearms, but I do laugh sometimes thinking of some of the crap I have purchased in the past wondering what I was ever thinking.

sounds like you have a nice collection going.. go with what you like and take anyone else's opinion with a grain of salt.

I started out with a lever action (Winchester Model 94). I carried that gun on the saddle and killed a lot of deer with it. I also had a High Standard revolver and later a Colt M1917.

It wasn't until I joined the Army that I learned to love the M1911 (in a scene reminiscent of Gary Cooper in "Sergeant York" -- "Why, Sajint, this is a FINE rifle-gun!") :D

As an adviser on my first tour in Viet Nam, we were issued only M2 carbines -- I knew that going in, and brought my Colt M357.

Nowadays, I have more revolvers than automatics, my rifles are mostly bolt action (of course, I DO have a Winchester Model 94) and my shotgun is an Ithaca Model 37 -- the last of the classic, all steel guns.

I always prefered revo's and pump action shotguns. I just turned 29. I wouldnt mind and may one day own an auto pistol, I have shot many of them, but I still have to get thru the loong list of revo's that I want much more first. :) I prefer simpler mechanisms and powerfull calibers over mini bullet firing 80 round capacity plastic rifles that look like they came off the spaceship enterprise. beam me up scotty.

My tastes are a little weird for my age as well. All of my other 19-20 year old friends can't wait to turn 21 and go out drinking. I, on the other hand, can't wait to turn 21 so I can buy handguns and ammo! :)

You have picked some high quality, dependable and fun firearms. You did good! Besides, you have what you like and what you shoot well. No way to improve on that. Some people eat broccoli and some can't stand it. Your tastes are your own business. Go with it.

I'm in the opposite boat- I'm 15, and more interested in AR-15s, FNs, Ak-10x, and other various EBR of the more modern variety. As far as handguns, I prefer 1911s, BHPs, and the USP- but I'm stuck in CA, so I've learned to love my M1, SKS, 870, Colt .38 OM, etc.

Ha! I was the same way, when I turned 21 I bought a Glock 31 to celebrate. I traded that glock 31 for my first wheelgun, an S&W model 65 3". I actually quit drinking when I was 20, go figure.....

I'm 19. My safes are already packed with WWII and earlier era rifles.

I don't even have a C&R yet :uhoh:

My friend wants an AR. I'd much rather have a 1903. I think Swedes are some of the most desireable rifles made. Tacti-cool holds nothing next to a handcrafted Mauser. A beat-up Garand with traceable lineage back to D-Day would more wanted to me than a transferable MAC-10 (well, I'd take the MAC-10, sell it, and buy the Garand). I think most good gun innovations stopped after the .308. Even the .308 is debatable.
