A man walking in Mountain View on Monday morning was robbed at gunpoint by a group of teenagers who police say were gang members responsible for another robbery a week ago at a nearby department store.

The robbery victim was carrying his own concealed weapon but chose not to fight off his attackers and handed over his wallet and cell phone, Lt. Paul Honeman said.

Police say the teenagers were also responsible for a robbery at the Gottschalks store at the Northway Mall on Dec. 11.

The three teenagers -- two boys and a girl -- were arrested Monday and charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree assault, third-degree theft and third-degree misconduct involving weapons. Because of their ages, their names were not released.

As of Monday night, charges related to the Gottschalks robbery had not yet been filed, Honeman said.

One or two other people may have been involved in the robberies, police said.

According to police, the teenagers walked up to the victim, who was not identified, near Peterkin Avenue and Schodde Street around 8:30 a.m. One teenager asked him for a cigarette, then, seconds later, another pulled out a gun and demanded his belongings, Sgt. Pablo Paiz said.

The teenagers fled on foot, police said.

Cha Lee, who lives nearby on Peterkin Avenue, heard the victim approach his home, yelling, "Help me! Help me!" When he opened his door, the man was shaking and "looked very scared," Lee said. Honeman said the victim was traumatized.

Hours later, police tracked down the teenagers several blocks away at a condo at 425 Price St. after one made a call on the stolen phone. In the home, police found the victim's wallet and the handgun, Honeman said. Police also discovered photos of the teenagers displaying gang colors and flashing identifiable gang signs, Paiz said.

The man positively identified his attackers, police said.

Monday afternoon, outside the condo unit, a snow-covered baby stroller sat inside the chain-link-fenced yard, near an upside down laundry basket. Nobody answered the door.

Next door, a teenager said she knew her neighbors but would not speak.

"I don't want to get killed," she said.

Two doors down, another young woman would say only: "They need more things for us to do. Get some programs or something." She, too, was scared to say anything about her neighbors.

On Dec. 2, 20-year-old Fiatau Saena was shot and killed when he ran to the aid of his mother during an armed robbery outside her home on Tarwater Avenue, a few blocks away from the robbery Monday. George M. Romero Jr., 18, has been charged with Saena's slaying.

From the balcony where the teenagers were arrested Monday is a clear view of the alcove in the apartment building next door where 24-year-old Christopher Sanchez was shot four times on Dec. 4, He survived. Police do not believe that incident was gang-related.

Police have made combating the nascent gang problem in Anchorage one of their top priorities since several gang-related murders earlier this year.

any thoughts? any different strategies you might have come up with?

specific comment: The victim survived. Good for him/her. Yielding was the right decision given that the attackers had superior numbers and surprise.

general comments: more people should exercise their right to carry, concealed or open. More people should practice doing things in squads. Failing to move around in diamond formation :neener: , one should still team up with a partner as much as possible.

aside: practicing great compasion thoughts/deeds often do more to get help, supernatural or otherwise  , than relying on the police or the passing good samaritan.

The quick, macho answer is, "They're lucky I wasn't the one they were robbing. Hell, I'da pulled my own piece and perforated the lot of'em."

Given the facts of the story, I think the man's actions were spot-on. He had a weapon, but the robber's had one too and "had the drop on him." Instead of escalating the situation, he gave them what they wanted. Then called 911, played the traumatized victim, and made a PID on the suspects.

Discretion is the better part of valor.

Exactly where should you position the SAW gunner when entering a WAL-MART in a wedge formation?

spiff,

How big is Mountain View? I've been to Mountain View, CA, which is probably why i've noticed it in 2-3 of your recent postings of these stories...

mountain view is kind of like a 'suburb' of anchorage, much like 'hillside', 'spenard', 'midtown'. its mostly a housing area, with various small retail businesses aligning the main streets. i'd guess 1/3 of anchorages population lives in mt view.

not sure if the chicken came before the egg in mt view, but somehow low income housing has led to a high ratio of generic criminals populating the area. while its no compton, it still has a reputation that is bad enough that i dont go anywhere near it.

its the only neighborhood in anchorage where contractors pay cash out of pocket for people to sit in their cars at jobsites to take down immediate info about thieves.

Exactly where should you position the SAW gunner when entering a WAL-MART in a wedge formation?

Generally you want the SAW gunner to the immediate right or left rear of the TL. Of course once you enter the store, the team has to spread out and go from a wedge into "strong wall" and assume points of dominance. A technique that I found particularly effective while playing DoomRainbowSoComHalo 36 was to have the SAW gunner covering Music/Movies/DVD's while the rest of the team moved to Sports and Autoparts. :p

I'm not sure...

what was meant by this quote in the article: "Two doors down, another young woman would say only: "They need more things for us to do. Get some programs or something.""

Was she implying the reason this happened is because the government is not sufficiently entertaining the youth in that town? Why doesn't our young woman do her own "program"?

of course. it isnt the kids faults, nor is it the parents fault. gotta blame someone though.

fact of the matter is that residents of such gang-populated areas of anchorage are frequent witnesses to crimes, but are not willing to come forward to help police because they fear retaliation.

Note: Anecdotal ammunition for the "People carrying are, in fact, capable of exercizing restraint." side of the argument in discussions of Carry.

hate to monday morning quarterback this, but...

The robbery victim was carrying his own concealed weapon but chose not to fight off his attackers and handed over his wallet and cell phone, Lt. Paul Honeman said.

I'm not so sure this was 'exercise in restraint' as much as 'getting caught with pants around ankles'. Could it have been that the robbery victim was just in pure condition White when the crooks got him?

"Help me! Help me!" When he opened his door, the man was shaking and "looked very scared," Lee said. Honeman said the victim was traumatized.

Getting the shakes is completely understandable... but it sounds like the victim was in full-fledged panic mode. Made me think more and more that this was 'getting caught with pants around ankles' again rather than self-restraint.
