The .308 Winchester is burly and strapping:D

The FAL's nickname is "The right hand of the free world"

The .223 is for poodle poping and the 7.62x39 is too communist for a patriot:neener:

So uhhh FAL I vote FAL

Um only 4 of those rifles you listed are actually assault rifles. The G3 and the FAL are battle rifles.

I'd say the M16 is the best. Accuracy, fire rate, and with better long-range accuracy than the other actual assault rifles you listed. The M4 is a close second, it just has less velocity due to the shorter barrel. I would personally choose an M16 of the rifles you listed.

I've always had a thing for the AK-47, reliability and durability. I also prefer post/notch sights.

And yes, I've shot AR's.

I chose the M16 also. The G3 and FAL are battle rifles, the Aks make me want to start a collective farm, and the M4 is a truncated M16,so make it second.

It's kind of a flawed question. Each rifle has its merits, and will perform better in different environments and on different battlefield settings.

Gotta go with the M16. FAL and G3 are full caliber battle rifles (might as well ad the M14 if you're going to have those two). AK47/74 is a cheap, though very reliable weapon most suited to conscripted peasants. It's also piss poor on the ergonomics front.

M4 is better at clearing buildings than the M16. M16 is better at intermediate/long range shooting than the M4. But I'd argue the M16 is better at clearing a building than the M4 is at intermediate/long range shooting.

So I choose the M16.

Like other guys have said, the G3 and FAL are not assault rifles at all (which is not to say they don't have their merits, but its strictly apples and oranges).

Of the assault rifles on the list, my vote was for M4, but M16 is a narrow second. The AKs just are not laid out for use in a gunfight -- most of the controls require the use of the firing hand coming up off the grip or some real complicated rolling manuevers. Mag changes ain't getting done in a timely manner either, compared to the AR-15 type weapons. Either the 47 or the 74 will still kill folks dead as cancer, but they simply aren't as good at it as the M16/M4, in my opinion.

Someone please provide a link where the military officially defines either "assault rifle" or "battle rifle." I think you'll have a difficult time finding one.

I do agree that the FAL and G3 are in a different class. Full power cartridge rifles vs intermediate power cartridge rifles. But since all can be carried into combat, I don't think it's incorrect to include them in a comparison of "combat rifles."

Um, only 2 of these are rifles, the rest are carbines.
Assault can be committed with a dinner fork.
Everything on this list is a Homeland Security weapon.

Which is the better millitary assault rifle?
1st off which military do you speak of? thats a very broad generaization, because we the USA don't use but two of those the rifles listed, and two of which aren't "assault" rifles like they are labled. another generilization made by those that have never had to assualt anything in their lives. the others listd like the fal, g3 etc, are too big and are civilian "assault rifle " cool but don't make the cut for the job being done by the boots on the ground, i wouldn't carry one as an assualt/breech/mout gun no way.

Go to the website http://www.world.guns.ru and you will find that the H&K G3 and the F.A.L are on the list of "Assault Rifles".
Just because it is on the web makes it true? ever think that He, the author of the website is as uninformed as the others that think they are truely "assualt rifles"?

Without more info I picked the AK. Each gun has its own purpose, and each is good at its own thing. But in each and every situation, you need a gun that will shoot 100% of the time, regardless of conditions, dirt, rounds fired, abuse, etc.... This is where the AK excells. There are better guns for individual jobs. But none better than the AK as an all arounder (unless you need really long range accuracy and hitting power in which case I would have picked the FAL).

But then again, I don't claim to be an expert, or know anything more that any other armchair soldier.

Assault rifles are rifles with semi and FA capability, chambered for intermediate power rounds. There's a definition for you, if you're ever wondering. :) (Since "assault rifle" is not an ARMY definition, you'll never see it defined! A 5.56 mm, magazine fed, gas-operated, air-cooled, semiautomatic or three-round burst, hand-held, shoulder-fired weapon.-M4/M16A2)

I'd take the M4. According to doctrine, the M16 only has 50 meters more effective range than the M4. Since the M16 has an overlong LOP, I can't aim it worth a damn anyway, so FOR ME, the M4 is more effective at range!

Notice the FOR ME in my post. 'Course, a 20" barrel with a short or adjustable stock would be the ideal compromise in such a distance shoot FOR ME.

I like the AK's. Totally reliable and no small parts to lose. Not much more refined than a cap gun, the simplicity is beautiful.

John,
I should have paid more attention to your location and the fact that you said at range, not at the range.

Thank you for your service.
