If it was me, I would choose an Israeli Galil Arm. A 223. with the reliability of an AK, plus I always liked the looks of the Galil.

I'll be the shallow, ignorant n00b and say I picked the AK-47 because I think it is the coolest. Don't ask me to define cool, I just know it when I see it. :D

And maybe "assault rifle" isn't the best term... maybe "military gun that isn't a pistol" is more appropriate.

I know the DI system is messed up, but I still chose the M4 carbine. It's light, ergonomical, can use many accessories, 5.56mm is flat shooting and controlable.

I almost chose the AK-74 but realized that I've handled AK's, and they feel like a mis-shaped cinder block. Oh and uhh.............CLICK!!!!:neener:

Um only 4 of those rifles you listed are actually assault rifles. The G3 and the FAL are battle rifles.
They are all "battle" rifles, and you use them to "assault" with. :)

It amazes me how so many want to argue the merits of rifles that were only issue for most major armies for a very short time. The AK's and M16's have been in "constant service" now longer than many who post are old.

Well whats available to most civilians isnt really an assault rifle. The rifles us subjects are permited to buy are semi-auto copies of select fire military rifles :p . As far as whats the best military style rifle that question has no one answer. It is a matter of personal taste. For me its the Kalashnikov style rifles for their simplicity, ruggedness, and reliability. For others it may be the AR for its light weight, and accuracy. Others still may prefer the FAL or HKG3 for its powerful round. Whats best depends on what you like and what you need it for. And I consider the FAL and G3 to be "assault rifles" and the Garand, and M-14 to be battle rifles. See the differance?

AK-47, cause even if you die using it, a family member can pick it up and use it without worrying too much about cleaning it.

It's powerful and customizable.

I don't seem to recall ever having seen an M4 on a 600yd DCM line.

I have seen a guy get more hits than misses, standing off hand, with an M4/Aimpoint combo shooting at a steel chest plate 400 yards out. The 14.5" barrel does what it needs to do, accuracy-wise, provided the guy behind the gun has the skills.

Not to cause anymore controversy on the subject matter, but if you go to this other website http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=19066 the U.S. Navy states that the M-4 is an assault rifle.

Look at the tag line.

He may be Navy, but he's an E-3 photographer wannabe journalist. Don't rely on journalists for accuracy. Especially government reporters.

To keep on thread, I vote for FAL

USN
USNR
USNR(ret) (happy place)

There is a difference between assault and battle rifles, yes, but why is this getting so out of hand? Stop giving the guy trouble, or I might just have to assume that those who are were just too dumb to understand his simple question. Come on guys, you know what he meant.

Well I will never forget it.

While I think the FAL is the best rifle of those listed, I voted for the M-4 as the best assault rifle per the definition of an "assault rifle". As far as world of guns web site goes, did you notice the .RU in the end of the link address? Isn't that a Russian web site? I guess I just don't accept the definitions of those that think "vodka" is Russian for "water".:neener:
