At what point will you start buying primers again?

I still have a decent supply of primers but I’m not using them very much because the replacement cost is so high. One of the online suppliers has them for $89/K with free hazmat over $99. Part of me wants to just suck it up and buy a couple of boxes so I can shoot them up but the cheap side of me wants to wait a few more months in hopes prices come down a bit more. I was paying about 1/3 this price just a few years ago and it pains me greatly to pay so much.

Yes, I know that prices on everything have gone way up, but not 300%. I just don’t want to believe this is the new normal, even though a part of me thinks that might be the case.

Ar what price point will you start stocking up again?

I already have. I don’t really like it. I used to keep a longer stock but I am purposely keeping less on hand these days. I currently have 3 + years worth on hand and just do not want to stock deep at these prices. Maybe I’m dreaming and they’ll never be cheaper.

Timing and demand is key. The war in Ukraine is key.

I broke down and picked up some of the Fiochhi SR a few months ago mainly because they worked so well in a few loads I have going and I was down to my last sleeve of SR's.

For less than the price of 1K of CCI I still got an extra 500. For just practice and hunting ammo I'm not complaining too much. Granted it was far above the last one I purchased, but those were close to 10yrs old and needed to be finished up.

I'm hoping that below $50 will be the norm. But I will probably start buying them when they're in the $70s. I seen at Fins that they brought the primers back onto the shelves in the reloading area, and not behind the sales counter. That's a step in the right direction.

That’s interesting, and definitely correct, but I’m going to call you out for avoiding the question. You oughta known someone was gonna say it. :neener:
Me, personally, I’m not nearly as hung up on price as I am on value and availability. I will start buying when it gets to the point I can’t load the quality of ammo I need for the kind of shooting I do.
For example, I’m out of WLP’s. There’s no load in my personal catalog that isn’t just as good (or really close to as good as) with either a Federal or CCI LPP. The WLP is a touch hotter and works just a touch better with the Accurate ball powders. So if I run low on CCI and WLP comes available, I’ll have to think about buying some, even if it’s not the best price ever. It’s going to be a just-in-time purchase decision.

I buy based on the availability of my funds, not the cost of primers. I’d rather have them at $100 than do without at any cost. It’s still much cheaper than buying the calibers I shoot, but I don’t shoot 9mm.

If I limited my shooting and guns to 9mm, 223, 7.62 nato, I’d probably complain about the price. But at a dollar a round for 44 special and $1.50 a round for 30-30, reloading is still not only economic, but darn economic.

I primarily use Federal SPP and I held out till now. $90/1,000 w/ free shipping but Hazmat still applied.

I was about ready to try some of those Servicios primers... and then I got a notification PV had CCI's, so that's where I went. $99/brick. I was hoping for $79/brick primers, but they had CCI's, and I wanted them... so I paid the price.

I'm hoping once the shelves start to fill back up, we will see them in the $79/brick price, with maybe some lower prices after that.

My local Scheels has them on the shelf... I may have to truck over there and just see what they have.

I bought 10,000 of the Servicios small pistol primers that Norma had for $60 per 1,000 a month or two back. With free shipping and hazmat, that has been the cheapest I’ve found in a while. I’d like to see them for less than $50 per 1,000 out the door before I will really stock up.

I have bought some of the primed .38 Special and .380 ACP brass that American Reloading has had for 25% off with free shipping and hazmat per 1,000 rounds. They show up at my door at less than $100 per bag. The .380 brass is 85% Dakota, which comes from Florida, and truly appears to be unfired. I’m happy with this as I don’t shoot these very often.
