Got a knock at the door and went to answer. Two gentlemen were standing there and immediately, one flashed the badge -- ATF. I locked up not knowing what to say or what they were here for.

They said they were doing an investigation about some stuff I purchased off the web from Germany. I was thinking, oh great...

The company where I got my parts had been illegally importing suppressors to internet clients. My gun in question was my Walther P22.

They asked if I had purchased a suppressor and I quickly told them the truth, "NO!". Then, I made it clear by telling them that I am a criminal justice major, a former Marine, and the fact that if I wanted a suppressor, I'd get my sheriff’s signature, wait the 90 days for a background check, and pay my $200 for the stamp. This gave them some reassurance that I did nothing illegal.

Luckily, I had the Pay Pal records from the purchase. I had gotten the parts off of eBay using "Buy It Now" and there was a record of my transaction that I was thankfully able to find. I had purchased a grip frame, a 5" target barrel w/ comp, a scope mount, and a scope. Not a thing more!

I disassembled the pistol and also brought in the boxes from the parts that I had purchased. They were concerned because the Walter has a threaded barrel that could accept a silencer. It took a while to explain to them that the barrel was threaded in order for the barrel cap to keep the barrel sleeve in tact which kept the barrel from falling off the gun.

They had a print out from the site in Germany that offers the parts. They had a picture of a suppressor and the adapter needed but I had proof that I didn't order a suppressor nor an adapter. More concern from them was that a suppressor could be made that used no adapter. I assured them, again, that I would only pursue legal avenues if I ever wanted a NFA item. I also reiterated the fact that I had received no such suppressor nor adapter.

Anyway, the guys were nice, but it still made me a bit nervous since it seemed as if they had been accusing me of illegally receiving a restricted item from overseas.

For any of you thinking about ordering from this place: http://www.kaehny.de/export/export.htm DO NOT DO IT!. I am going to make my way around several forums now and spread the word not to EVER purchase anything from this company!!!

Thats odd there was a guy on glock talk that had the same thing happen.

Weren't they the same company that was selling standard caps on gunbroker during the AWB? I was always leary of them after seeing some of the ads they had there.

Apparently, they limited the questioning to the purchase, correct? They did not have any 'list' of other firearms you may own, and did not question you about anything else?

The one on GT was me if you are saying you saw this today.

Documents in order? Well, kinda. I just had my Pay Pal history. Thank God I used Pay Pal and had a record of my purchase.

I assume that customs busted someone on an illegal import and then they somehow got access to the company's export/sales records.

If they had that info, then it should suffice to say that they would have seen that I had never ordered such item. I ain't that stupid nor am I a criminal!

Did they have a search warrant??

I would have been hesitant to allow them inside the house. . .not rude or anything, but I would have spoken to them on the porch and if they needed anything asked them to wait till I got it.

good thing you had all the documents in order.

It's always good to have documentation but it's not like they could do anything unless you actually had an illegal suppressor or say a suspiciously tapped 2 liter bottle. :D

Scary absolutely. Luckily most every case that I have ever heard of that is like this puts no responsibility on the end buyer other then relinquishing the items in question and puts all the responsibility on the importer/seller. Seems like they want the big fish.

I really wish I could see what the big deal with supressors are. Hell I think they should come with every gun instead of a damn trigger lock at least they would actually do something good for the public at large.

Laws on objects are stupid.

Thanks for the warning... I just got a Weaver rail adapter off ebay from them, so I'll make sure to keep my reciepts. Was also eyeing their blank firing guns for use on some movies I'm working on, but I'd probably go through an FFL on that just to cover my bases.

It does say on their site that they aren't responsible for checking local laws, that it's up to the buyer to make sure everything is legit... but yeah, that's kinda shady.

Clearly we all know it's illegal to buy a supressor without the NFA rigamarole. However, I'd really like to know if these plastic coke bottle adaptors are legal:

Mod Note: Image removed due to dubious legality.

 Rather amusing, to say the least. Reminds me of the old coffee can on the tailpipe trick.

German dealer and paypal

I see that sight no longer accepts Paypal. Either Paypal shut them down or THEY desided not to use Paypal because of what ever.

If it reduces the muzzle signature, it's a suppressor. I believe there is at least one fellow who is doing (or did) federal time for possessing a firearm and a potato during the commission of a crime, and was convicted of having a suppressor to wit the potato.

Cortland I assume you are joking but if you are not that is most certainly illegal in the eyes of the BATF. Anything that can be attached to a firearm and used to suppress sound is a sound suppressor and therefore falls under all Class Three laws. So technically that bottle would require a $200 tax stamp and the paperwork.

Guilty until proven innocent?

What were they planning to do if you didn't keep your receipts? Shouldn't an ATF agent know that a threaded barrel is perfectly legal?

What a HUGE amount of useless foot work for F-Troop to track down every sale made by this company. It is neither our fault nor the German company's fault that the US views suppressors as criminal tools while the rest of the world views them as safety devices.

It also seems incredible (and scary) that F-Troop agents were so unfamiliar with the design and construction of the P22 and don't know that threaded barrels have many uses are not illegal.

If the ATF or any federal agency decides to take interest and focus on something.... then the chances are they will have so much data....the problem will be...for them to sort threw it all... but they will. Ace-Lite

I'd have to see that to believe it, buzz.

After all, what if the guy just happened to be hungry in the commission of the crime and brought along a potato to munch on? I often carry a pistol and a potato. Actually, I've found it to be quite impressive if I carry a large potato tucked into Thunderwear... :neener:

You're a CRIMINAL JUSTICE MAJOR and you let them into your home, presumably withought a warrant?! Are you insane?!?

Guilty or not, I insist law enforcement follow proper procedure, and that they do not get anything more than I absolutely must give.

Art, as stated above, I will prossilby pursue federal avenues for employment when I am done with school. Why make this look worse on paper than it already is?

I am sure that when federal background checks begin, this will pop up. When it does, I want it to state that I cooperated and helped with the case. Why make unneeded trouble?

Good Job

While I do not agree with stupid NFA laws I think that I would have handled this situation similar to how you did. As long as they were being fairly easy going I think I would have followed their lead. If you start being a hard nosed I am sure they will get a warrant. If it is easy to clear up I think I would be as cooperative as possible.

correct actions

USMC.... you did the right thing... and your reasons or actions need no defense...or explanation. thinking the whole world is a battle field... and losing the focus to choose your fights....will always keep you on the wrong side. Arc-Lite

All I can say is that is pretty scary stuff!!!! Millions of illegals cross over the border yearly and THIS sort of stuff is what the Govt. guys worry about!! Unfrickin real!!!!!!
