I do own a few pistols and shoot them occasionally. However, I am more of a shotgun guru and don't keep up with the semi-auto pistol offerings near as much. Therefore I need a little help please.

I own and enjoy a Beretta 92FS. A friend of mine likes my Beretta but doesn't want to spend the bucks for one like mine for himself. He has been told that Taurus makes the same pistol cheaper and wants my opinion. Can someone tell me the model number for the Taurus clone if it exists? I want to research it and possibly look at one with him in a gun store when he visits me in a few weeks.

Educate me please.

Taurus PT-92. Very good gun. It was my first handgun purchased 4 years ago. I have several thousand rounds through it now. I carry/shoot the Beretta 92FS at work and prefer the Taurus over the Beretta. Some Taurus guns are junk, but the PT-92 is rock solid.

Many prefer the Taurus over the Beretta, myself included.

The reason, is that Taurus has the controls on the frame that are easy to reach. I have both, and the Taurus is more accurate for me, both the PT92 and the PT99, even though the Beretta has a chrome lined barrel and the Taurus models don't.

I guess it's up to the individual. You buddy can't go wrong with the Taurus PT92 or PT99

Also, it's not a clone. Taurus BOUGHT the factory that Beretta had in Brazil along with all the rights to produce the pistol, it's produced on the same assembly line with the same tooling. Taurus has improved the metal over Beretta and made sight improvements on the design... either way, you can't go wrong.

Beretta vs. Taurus

Baretta got the military contract from south america or parts of s. america and producing the guns in Italy and shipping was a no win proposition so they moved machinery and top gunsmiths to s. america to do their production there. After the contract ended it was either ship all the equip. back to Italy or sell it to a company that produces handguns to save and make it a win win situation. Well no one has to guess who bought it all. Taurus. the only stipulation is they had to change 2 designes on the new Taurus's I forget what they were but baretta users know better than I as I'm a Large bore man like the 50 a&e 45 winchester mag. 454 casull and our old favorite the 44 Mag. I caught this story at a Texas gun show between a taurus lover and a Baretta admirier but I read an article shortly thereafter so I guess its true. Also by the way I'm a newbe and love handguns. Largebore are my favorite my other hobby is raising exotic birds such as Macaws etc. hope I can be an asset to the group and maybe learn something I don't know as of yet thanks gunslinger720

Thanks gunslinger and welcome to "The High Road". I have been here for a few years mostly on the shotgun section. I prefer to listen to those who are helpful and ignore those who would rather criticize than be helpful. Thanks for your insight and welcome to the board.

I would pass. I own one. A spring went missing one day. Now if I want it fixed it'll cost me $60 to ship it back to Taurus + labor. You can't get half the parts for the gun.

i like the taurus model better than the berretta as a matter of fact. i don't like the design, or the da/sa but if i was gonna buy one i would buy th etaurus because i prefer that model to the berretta.

PT92c

First gun I ever bought - mid 80s. Still have it, probably more than 12,000 rounds through it now. Goes BANG every time. Wish I could find a couple more original mags for it!

I also had a early PT92 back in the late 80's, decent gun for the money at the time. I haven't owned or shot any new Taurus.

But how much $$ are you looking to spend?

Even in inflated-price Massachusetts I was able to pick up a used Beretta for $400 which means they must be even less in other states.

I've got a late 80s model as well, also love it. Don't know how many thousands I've fired through it, but the only time I had problems was when the wife fired it and soaked up the recoil, resulting in stove pipes.

This is the one gun I've sold that I wish I could have back.

I put at least 6-8000 rounds through it and never changed so much as a spring. It ate everything I gave it, and it shot well.

For the $250 I sold it for, I couldn't replace it with a similar quality gun.

As do I. Specifically, the Taurus safety allows Condition 1 (C&L) carry whereas the Beretta does not.

I have several of the (pre-lock) PT92 and PT99 models, and think relatively highly of them.

Maybe its a fluke, maybe not, but I will add my experience here. I owned an early pt92. No problems. It fed great and went bang every time. Sold it a long time ago. A friend came over about 3 years ago with one, NIB, never shot he bought of a former FFL who went out of business. Thing would jam on FMJ at least 3-4 times per magazine. Tried 4 different mags, 2 of them brand new in package. The thing couldnt hold a group either. Upon closer inspection when the slide was fully in battery you could wiggle the barrel up and down and left and right almost .030". The thing was a good example of machining garbage.

My PT92 was the first pistol I ever bought. I'm yet to have any problems with it and like others have said, I like the frame mounted safety. Great gun in my opinion.

I have a pre-decocker variant PT92. Over 5k through it. No problems. The location of the safety, and it's action, make it much better to shoot and carry. Beretta built the plant in Brazil as part of an agreement with the Brazilian government when they won the bid for Brazil's military. When the contract was ful-filled, they were free to keep the plant there. However, to continue to operate, they would have been selling against their own Italian plants. They chose not to do that, and sold the plant to Taurus.

I have never heard of a Taurus slide fracturing, and their locking blocks seem to hold up longer than the first variant Beretta pistols. The magazines are not interchangeable without modifications, either.

As for the person with the lost spring, wasn't that your OWN fault? Check with Numrich Arms. Catalog #29, pages 978-980 list virtually every part. So much for
You can't get half the parts for the gun.
:D

Why settle for a copy, when you can have the real thing ?

Why pay $100 or more for the same thing :)

I love my mid-1980 vintage PT-99. Shoots very well. BTW, are the the podcaster Average Joe? If so, love to hear your reviews.

Someone mentioned above that they couldn't get some spring and had to ship it back to Taurus for 60.00.

Midway has EVERY part for the aforementioned Taurus. Cheap might I add as well.
