Id go with the ATI 92c which is a part for part clone of the Beretta 92 centurion on beretta tooling and military grade.

Best part they are 299.99 at cdnn.

I just bought one and I get to pick it up friday(already handled it).

Look up reviews they are great and generally other than the writing on the slide its every bit as good as the 92 centurion.

S&W 5906 is a great gun but I dont care for the trigger and the way the gun fits in my hand.
PF9 is a good value for carry but not for HD/range

CZ's if you shop around, or even if you don't the P-07 can be found all day at $400.

One of the older S&W all metal semi autos such as the Model 5906 in 9mm are practically indestructable and extremely reliable. Second choice would be a used Glock or Springfield.

Don't let the gun store clerk scare you away form that Taurus 92 if that is what you want. I don't own a Taurus and there are varying opinions on them but from what I have heard and read the 92 series is a very solid model.

Having said that if possible try one out first or anything else you are considering.

There are a TON of great pistols in the $500 range but in the end it will boil down to what works best for the person that wants to purchase it.

I will have to echo IMO the SIG SP2022 as a top contender in that price range (I own one myself) and if you can find a nice used SIG P226 I think you would be extremely happy with that also.

OP, Bradis is a great place to buy... down on Kentucky Avenue. You could rent and shoot some at Pop Guns off Washington St. on the east side. A great way to test them out.

Ill say what I say to all the noobs. Try a LOT of guns! I shopped for 10 months and tried MANY MANY makes/models. 9mm is a great choice for a first handgun.

My top vote is for XD9 4". To this day it is my most fired weapon.

Take everyones advice with a grain of salt, what works for me might not be the best for you. Have fun. Be safe.

Recommendations are useless. Everyone is going to recommend their favorite gun and there are a boatload of good 9mm's to choose from.

Stick with a quality brand. Handle/shoot as many as you can and choose the one that feels best in your hand. As you narrow down the list, Google search particular models to learn more about them.

Sigma!:p

I've owned a half dozen and picked up my last one in like new condition for $225.

Great car gun.

Don't believe all the crap you hear about the triggers. It's a simple fix if it's not up to your standards.

The newer ones are fine.

Forget brands for a second. Any top tier manufacturer will be good, including Beretta.

Here is what I would do:

Go to your local indoor range and rent some 9mm's. Pay attention to these things:

1) Natural point-of-aim. Some pistol grips have a sharper angle, like a Glock. See if you like that and if it fits your wrist. Most other guns use a more traditional "American" angle.

2) Play with an SA/DA like a Beretta or SIG. Do you like that snappy SA trigger on the second round? If not, try a DAO like a Smith M&P or similar.

3) How are you on weight, fit and finish? Is Polymer okay? Or do you like all steel? Is this for carry, where weight is a factor? Or is this is a range toy? Are you susceptible to recoil?

4) How about # rounds in a magazine? Grip size? Double or single stack?

After trying all these for yourself, you should be able to narrow down the options. If not, come back here and we'll help ya'!

The Ruger SR9, the Kahr CW9, and the Sig SP2022 are all new for $400 and the same quality as the M&P, the XD, and the Glock ($500-$600). To me, those are the best value (maybe a couple others I'm not thinking of) because you are no more likely to have problems with them than any other top quality gun. The Taurus 24/7 and Kel-Tec PF9, for example, are also pretty good and can be bought for under $400, but I'd consider them a step down from the others.

Right now there are some good deals on springfield xd pistols. Here in southern california I just bought one for $399. It comes with two mags and springfield will give you three more mags for free through the end of november..

I'd say an xd9sc or fullsize great gun for the price and you can get a total of 5 mags if you buy b4 dec.
Cant beat this deal just got my mags it took 8 days.

Glock 17.

Glock 19 if you might CCW in the future.

I was pretty sold on a Taurus 92, but then I was talking my local gun store clerk, who comes from a LEO background, and he said he wouldn't own either the Taurus or the Beretta.

Your gun store clerk is FoS.

I carried a Beretta on police patrol for several years. I patrolled a gang infested Navy town in Washington state, where it was directly exposed to rain, snow, cold, etc. It performed flawlessly - it never hiccupped.

Were I to choose a Beretta design it'd be the Taurus with the frame mounted manual safety. I prefer the Taurus' frame mounted safety to the Beretta's slide mounted safety. Plus the Taurus can be kept "cocked & locked" (like a 1911) to fire the first shot in single-action mode.

Best wishes on your choice.

Sig pro 2022. Buds gun shop has them for i believe right around the 380-400 mark. Really nice gun for the price.

Go to a range and try them out. rent everyone that you are interested in, shoot them, then decide.

I own one and i love it. It shoots great and for the price its hard to beat. The only downside is that it only comes with 1 mag.

Just bought a 95% S&W 915. It is an awesome firearm. I put some night sites on it and it shoots like a dream. I will buy more 3rd gem Smiths in the future.

You will learn that opinions are like a**h0lEs in that everyone has one. Yet it doesn't mean they are correct. Listen to all opinions/comments but make your own decision prior to buying and not someone's word that an entire line of guns should be avoided.

Suffice it to say that the model 92 from either Taurus or Beretta is arguably one of the finest handguns ever designed. I tend to be very fond of Mr. Browning's 1911, but the 92 is every bit as sweet "in my opinion."

-Cheers

You can probably still find some 5903's around and some Sig P6's. However P6 is single stack as opposed to double stack on the S&W'S. They are both good pistols.

What feels good in your hand, what do you feel comfortable with? The controls are a factor. Safe action with no safety, DA only or condition one SA only?
Check out all of this and then ask will I carry it? Do you want an option like this to make an impact on your choice? Would you just buy another weapon later and can you afford it?
I have always been in favor of multi use on weapons if possible. I have suggested a 4 inch .357 to many 9mm lookers for many reasons.
There is plenty of information out there and looking at this site and some reviews should narrow the options.
My final word on it is try and buy American we need the jobs.

you have a few things to iron out first. do you want all steel, or steel slide & alloy frame or steel slide with a polymer frame. 2nd do you want hammer fired or striker. when you have those down it will narrow down your options. at that point see which ones feel the best in your hands & points naturally for you. if it were me i would go for a cz 75 great gun for the money. second would be a used sig 226 or 229 in 9mm. but i like steel or alloy framed handguns with an external hammer. for home defense i would highly recomend good night sights as well, even if you buy them later & have them installed.

Stoeger Cougar 8000. Under $400 for a $700+ Beretta handgun. Best value on the market today.

Do some research on it.

IMHO the CZ 75B is the best 9mm ever made at any price. When you consider that you can buy a new one for under $500, it's amazing.

What is even more amazing one can get one with hammer & sickle plus red star along with bunch of cyrillic stampings (aka Russian hieroglyphics) on it.

So do you avoid German and Austrian goods because of the Nazis, Italian goods because of fascist Mussolini, and Japanese goods because of Pearl Harbor? I'm sure your house is full of "RED" Chinese goods.

I buy American guns most of the time, but I can't resist CZ. Besides, if you knew your history you would know that the Czechs hated the Russians and Communism, resisting them as best they could.
