Best movies for gun enthusiasts

Sabotage on net flix. Some seems a little far fetched but for the most part I thought the gun scenes were accurate.

Here's a thing I've been noticing about a lot of film and television gunfire scenes lately. No recoil.

I was watching a terrible SciFi channel zombie series the other day and there was a scene where the female protagonist was shooting zombies with a .357 mag revolver (scoring perfect headshots while running at top speed, of course) and the gun was staying perfectly level.

I'm wondering if a lot of productions are now using CGI to fill in muzzle flash and report rather than blanks which should generate at least some recoil.

Probably so. That might help explain how so many semi automatic handguns fail to have the slide so much as budge during "firing".

"Killing Them Softly" has a few good scenes.

The Slo-mo of the Hi-Power(?) is cool. Only fake thing is you can see the obvious use of the 5 in 1 bottleneck blanks being used, and of course no recoil.

The shotgun scene looks realistic, especially the kill shot.

Did anybody say Young Guns. Sargent York made me want a 1903 springfield.

American Sniper....

I saw American Sniper in IMAX on Tue.
Its a good film & actor Bradley Cooper puts a lot into it.
Its a lot like Saving Private Ryan(1998).
The gun & action scenes are good.
My only minor gripes are that in a few combat scenes the spec ops & marines wait for the terrorists to raise weapons or aim. In real CQB or combat that would get you killed.
I also noticed Cooper wore a SIG P220 .45acp cocked. I read American Sniper & Kyle stated he used S-A .45acp 1911s and P220s. He never said he carried the SIGs cocked or in single action mode.

Way of the Gun: this movie surprised me and is probably my favorite "gun" movie.

Commando: I was a big Arnold fan in the 80's. I still have dreams about stocking up in the secret room of the surplus store. I always pick up the good stuff that Arnold overlooked (revolvers and shotguns...geez!).

Heat: I liked that the gun fights used real gun sounds. Pacino's FAL was pretty sweet, too.

The Professional: IIRC there were some pretty exotic weapons displayed.

Tremors: My dream rec room. "Ammo capacity or penetration?"

Ronin
Enemy at the Gates
Band of Brothers
Collateral
Lone Survivor
Fury

That's all I got right now.

I'm not a big fan of Jack Reacher. As a US Army MP(lower enlisted) veteran I can tell you both the feature film & the novel series(by Lee Child) are full of $&@% moments & completely in-accurate points. Both with weapons and US military/law enforcement protocols.
A real "Reacher" wouldn't be a commissioned officer & more than likely, he'd be in Fort Leavenworth KS displinary barracks.
I've only seen the movie, never read the books, but I think it's only fair to point out that in the movie he is a former MP. He is a private citizen, not even a cop, and the plot does not involve the military in any way. I liked that movie because it has nothing in it that violates the laws of physics. Unlikely, yes. Even a bit over the top. But not physically impossible. (Unlike, say, the G.I. Joe or Mission: Impossible movies.)

Heat and Collateral are both good movies. Heat actually shows people reloading.

Saving Private Ryan if you are a fan of WWII firearms. The Garands don't have lockbars, however.

HBO's Band of Brothers and The Pacific both featured some really neat WWII era weapons. You have to get past the fact that they are using 1903a3's at Guadalcanal instead of 1903 Springfields.

Road to Perdition has some common stuff and some odd ball stuff. You expect to see 1911's and even Thompson Sub Guns in a gangster movie, but seeing Jude Law sporting a Savage Model 1907 and a Winchester model 1897 was really cool.

L.A. Confidential is a another really good gun movie with some neat old pieces.

If you're gonna mention an Arnold movie, why not mention the first Terminator movie? It's the first move I remember seeing a big 1911 with a laser on it, and it must of had an extended barrel too. That was a sweet pistol. Then there's the scene where the terminator is at the gun store. Very unrealistic as you can't by an automatic Uzi, but the fact that the terminator specifically asks for the "Uzi 9mm" is pretty cool. I also wonder about the shotgun the terminator used in that seen, the one where the sales guy says "you can go pump or auto" with it.

I haven't seen it yet, but I've read a lot of + buzz/good reviews(gun-tactics) of the crime thriller: John Wick.

He had a cool comp on his P30 and I think its probably the first time Ive seen the KSG shotgun used in a movie.

Loved Terminator. Lots of awesome and realistic gunplay. Shooting, reloading, running...

Not sure whether a car gas tank will explode being shot with a 12 gauge but it moved the story forward. Loved watching the shotgun duel while driving, the chases and gun fights later on... The gun store scene was awesome, particularly the dialogue. As for the fully auto Uzi, I just assumed that the terminator could mechanically alter the Uzi to make it fully auto to suit his needs for max firepower. He selected an excellent variety (shotgun, AK/Galil, Uzi, 1911, and revolver). I loved the police station shootout, the variety of guns and gunplay, etc. I can't recall any real flubs with the gunplay other than perhaps some hip shooting that was popular back then.

It's a common error that AS totes a big 1911a1 .45acp in the nightclub scene of Terminator(1984) but in fact, he's using a Detonics .451 Scoremaster. As a teen I recall a few gun magazines & movie mags saying that point. ;)
For many years, I too thought Chuck Norris used a 30/06 rifle in LoneWolf McQuade but in fact in was a 7.62mm SSR sniper rifle.
Id add that in a brief scene, McQuade's Texas Ranger character moves a OD box or canister marked; 30/06 armor piercing  .

Don Johnson's cop series Nash Bridges had a 1911a1 sidearm too but that was in .38Super. Many fans & "gun experts" said Bridges used a .45acp or .40S&W.
A character once asks Nash what type of pistol he uses & he replies: "A .38 Colt". :D

Posters vs films....

What a film character holds in a movie poster or ad is not whats always in the film.
The DVD cover for the WWII drama; The Raid has a US Army Ranger holding a Beretta M9 9mm, .
Also, I saw a recent bargin bin DVD cover of the action classic: 48Hours(1982).
Actor Nick Nolte holds a stainless Beretta 92F pistol.
This is quite a feat since the police drama was produced about 4 years before the model came out.
Finally, another Eddie Murphy film: Beverly Hills Cop(1984) has a film ad-poster with Murphy holding a stainless Colt .45acp 1911 pistol. In the film, Foley packs a Hi Power 9mm(common among Detroit police of the era).

www.imfdb.org
EDIT, I checked IMFdb.org and yes they have a rather detailed look at the AMT Longslide pistol used in the film. So I guess we all learned something, ;) .

Loved Terminator

Sci-fi films like Terminator and Escape from New York City we're great movies to watch as a high schooler. The weaponry, scene locations and digital-free special effects made them almost believable. My favorite weapons in Terminator were the pipe bombs.
