Best non German mauser...

I've had three Yugo M24/47's and was pleased with all of them. I am surprised at how many of these rifles shoot so well.

Smith, I very much like your FN's. I have two great Safari Grades. They are wonderful rifles but they cost so much money now.

Legend has it that WWI is what stopped the trademark infringement lawsuit by Mauser against Springfield.

I don't think WWI stopped it I think it was just settled. I read somewhere Springfield paid Mauser roalties even during the war.

I've heard that the Germans were still paying royalties to Maxim (who was then in Britain) during the war.

Swedish, argentine and Persians are the best of the Mauser breeds, any one who argues differently does not know what they are talking about.

The general rule of thumb is that contract and swedish mausers are on the high end of the quality scale. While wartime manufactured and post ww2 mausers tend to be on the low end. That being said even a Mauser on the lower end of the quality scale (that is still in good condition) will still be better made then a lee-enfield or mosin nagant.

Almost humorous how trademark laws supersede declarations of war between countries.

Like the old sayings go....

"All is fair in love and war but Buisness is Buisness"

It doesn`t say Mauser on it but the Win M70 is a Mauser design all the way. Double opposing lugs, swing safty, claw extractor.

I like my 1904/39 Portuguese Mauser with the crest of Carlos the First on the receiver. It was made in Berlin in or about 1904 and converted to 8mm by the Portuguese Army in 1939. Really quite an odd piece. I sold my Moroccan Police Mauser some years ago. It was .30'06 chambered and made in Belgium. 16 inch barrel three digit serial and no other marks on the receiver.

I believe the OP was asking for opinions on reasonably priced Mausers that compare to the German versions that often bring premium prices, primarily due to their historical markings.
For quality and decent shooters, the VZ-24 is a full length action that is well made and has consistent heat treat and can work well for custom action.
The 24/47 is an intermediate length action that is also well made and is often in near new condition from some distributors.
The M48 has the same intermediate length action as the 24/47 but the actions are usually not quite as smooth and are harder to find in the condition you find on the 24/47.
All these models will serve you well and not break the bank.

I was fortunate to get a few K. Kale Turk Mausers in good condition, back several years ago when they were selling for around $60, and I made a few custom rifles for myself.
I also have a VZ-24 that is rebarreled to 6.5x55 with an A&B heavy barrel.
