Big Wadcutters For Defense?

In anything 9mm and above I think you've got the energy to consistently open todays well designed jhp's. In 2" .38spls I think that starts to be a very valid theory theory if you're wanting deep penetration, especially without going to +P.

Naw, I worked in a gun range I've seen how annoying revolvers get with high volume
Typical range using NO CLEANING on the retal guns I bet.

Hard cast semi-wadcutters are great they cut a nice clean caliber size hole that BLEEDS. For the snubbys if you are handloading turn the hollow base wadcutter upsidedown with the hollow base out with the standard load makes an awsome defense cartridge accuracy works very well to about 15 yards. What more is needed?

We cleaned 'em the best we could.

Sigs and Glocks were subjected to the same treatment and didnt get as annoying.

Preacherman, I use Rainier plated 148-gr DEWCs in my .38 defense handloads - they stabilize just fine. Berry's work, too, but my testing showed that the Rainiers worked fine for me. I'm sure the Penn 225-gr .45 WCs will work fine, too.

Wadcutters

Preacherman, .357 148-grain DE wadcutters indeed have crimping grooves, and it's a nice feature that provides a little more capacity in a .357 Magnum case. I've loaded those bullets with Unique...seated out...that flirted with
1200 fps from a 4-inch barrel and a bit under 1150 from a 3-inch Model 13.

If someone makes a 200-220 grain DE wadcutter in .452 diameter, it would make for a nice 900-950 fps .45 Colt round by soaking up some of the cavernous case capacity. A .45 caliber full wadcutter at 900 fps would be singularly unpleasant at close range on the receiving end, methinks...

I don't remember the name of the company, but one bullet company out there makes full meplat wadcutters for various calibers in fairly hefty weights. I tried their 230gr .357 bullets and found them reasonably accurate out of my GP100 up to at least 950fps (that's as high as I pushed them). No pressure signs at that velocity, but I didn't have much use for them and stopped there.

Edit to add: here's the page http://www.pennbullets.com/38/38-caliber.html

Scroll down and find the 230gr Thunderhead. They also make a 270gr version for the 45Colt.

Like I said in the first reply! ;)

I just got a package from Bob Palermo at Penn Bullets this afternoon - 35 pounds packed into an $8 USPS "flat rate" box. Yippee - I'll be reloading on Friday! :D
