I did a search and didnt really find a good answer to my question.

I'm wondering specifically about the .40 JHP offerings from winchester (WWB) and remington (value packs). What kind of performance do these two rounds give?

I remember looking at the WWB JHP 9mm stuff on ammolab and it looked pretty good, even great for the price. I'm wondering if the same holds true for the .40. I had planned to shoot/carry this in my glock 27, but for 100 rounds the WWB is right at $30, the remington is $20.

So, any good info about performance? Looking at the two rounds, the cavity on the remington is much larger, but i'm not sure how that could affect expansion.

Thanks.

remington makes inexpensive 100 round packs of JHP's in 9, .40, and .45. The only ones I don't have any experience with are the .40's I've just never taken the plunge on picking up a box... but the 9 and .45 are fine...

IMO I wouldn't carry them unless it was all I had left... they are perfect for function testing with HP's. But I usually spend the money for a box or two of good premium defense rounds to carry.

I bet if you ever need them . They would work just fine. It you that must place the round on target. This way you can afford to practice with your carry round. I have the Rem 230HP value pack in my carry 45 at present.

I've been carrying the WWB JHP's in my 9's for quite some time. Same theory as above - I can afford to practice more with the round I actually carry, I know where it hits, and I know that it functions. I'll take that over a small possibility of better expansion with ammo I've not tested as thoroughly.

I haven't tried the Remington but I use the WWB JHPs in both my 1911 and Taurus PT140 Millennium Pro. In 9mm and .38spl/+P I go with the higher end ammo since with the smaller bore the best combo of expansion and penatration is more important. In both 9mm and .38+P I primarily use Speer Gold Dot. However, with the larger calibers there is more margin for error.

In the larger calibers I go with the WWB JHPs because: 1) they seem to do pretty well in ballistics tests you can find online, and 2) I can afford much more practice with my defensive ammo that way then I would with the premium ammo ($14 for 50 rounds of 180gr .40S&W JHP with the WWB v. $14-17 for 20 rounds with the premium stuff). The more you practice with your actual defensive ammo the more confident you can be that it will work well in your gun (150% more practice for the same money allows more chances for it to hiccup- if it always feeds the ammo you can be that much more confident than with less than half the rounds), and you will truly know the POI with that ammo out of you gun.

personally I practice with all kinds of ammo, cheap and expensive... HP's premium and value, fmj's and sp's. That way I can learn to shoot my weapon adequately with ALL brands of ammo and find out what doesn't work with my weapon...

God forbid I'm in a situation where I cannot choose my ammo, and have to use what is available... But I figure that I should be comfortable shooting just about anything out of my weapon...

BTW self defense is not Bullseye...

The 155 gr Jhp made by Remington I believe is issued to by the Border Patrol. Its a 1200 fps round that sounds like a .357 when fired.
