i have bought from Buds gun shop and they have been fairly priced and they ship very quick too very pleased with their service

I have to wonder how Buds does their drop shipping straight from the distributor?
I always thought that a dealer had to maintain bound books of all guns sold and that the guns had to be in possession of the dealer and properly logged in prior to being released. If they have an open relationship from their distributor where the gun is drop-shipped straight to a waiting FFL from the distributor, how is Buds properly maintaining their bound books?
Because the gun never gets physically shipped to Bud's so it doesn't have to get logged into their books. Bud's pays the distributor and has the gun shipped directly to the transfer dealer, and provides the distributor with a copy of the transfer dealer's FFL. The transfer dealer logs the gun as having come from the distributor.

Distributor

It sounds to me that the distributor must be an FFL to receive the guns. Being an FFL I am a bit confused. If I sell a gun to Bud's who do I ship the gun to?? Does the receiver of the gun log it into their books per ATF requirements??

Of course they are an FFL. Anyone engaged in the business of dealing in firearms as a dealer or manufacturer must hold a Federal Firearms License.

The only distributor I've received drop shipments from on behalf of Bud's is Sports South. They enclose a copy of their FFL in the box.

If you sell a gun to Bud's, well, ship it to Bud's.

The FFL who receives a gun ALWAYS logs it into his books. You should know that already. ATF doesn't hide those recordkeeping requirements.:scrutiny:

The way i see it is "if you cant beat em, join em"

We have had many local folks buy from Buds because they didnt want to pay the tax and the Buds price was good. It happened so much that we began to embrace the idea because it actually has some upside to it.

If i have to order in a gun for somebody local i have to go through the ordering, pay for it, keep it all straight financially, log it in as stock in our inventory system etc, so there is cost involved with the time to do that.

When Buds ships to us for a transfer to a customer it just arrives, no call etc, we log it into the bound book, do the transfer and get $20 from the customer. Work wise its less then buying the gun and reselling it to them etc.

Do i wish i could compete with them? Yeah of course i do, but i will take the $20 transfer fee all day long if i cant beat them on the gun and make an appropriate profit on it.

Now when you shop for a gun at Buds and pick the Central Ohio area, we are one of the highlighted dealers here because of feedback Buds has received about our service to their customers.

My FFL considers it an almost free 20 dollar bill.

I like my local shop, they're one of those "10% over cost" dealers.

Buds does beat them by anywhere from 10-$50 on many of the pistols on my list. However, unless it gets to be a significant increase, It's worth building the relationship with my Local store.

I'll likely never be standing in Bud's physical store, they won't be repairing any of my antique guns, it's no different to me than buying from Amazon.

For the record, Bud's current price on the M&P .40 is $15 under what I paid locally. The time spent fondling, versus the time spent waiting for the shipping was worth that much.

I have purchased 3 handguns and 1 rifle from buds. I did it primarily to save. They have great prices and I do not have to pay any tax on them but just pay $27 for ther transfer fee. WA state has now passed a ruling that these transfers will have to include the state tx on the full purchase. Last week I bought a Marlin 336 30-30 stainless steel from buds. I had to pay a total of $79 for the transer fee and state tax. Looks like this may be my last purchase of a firearm onlone.:(

When all your local FFL's are out of business, and you are wondering why .... look in the mirror.

When all the local FFL's are out of business, its becausebthey were too egotistical to make a living on transfers. $25-40 for three minutes worth of paperwork seems like a pretty good living to me.

If every local shop goes out of business because they cant meet prices like Buds, then I will open up a shop with about 100 square feet of retail space and a nice counter to lean on while everyone fills out their forms for all those transfers and make a fortune. Its just stupid to tell customers you wont do transfers and they should spend an extra $100 to buy the gun from you plus pay tax ontop of that. do the transfer, pocket the transfer fee and everyone has a good day. Instead of paying the rent on three gun sales a week, make the next two months rent by offering transfers for an honest and reasonable fee and doing 10 per day... all those people will be spending money on everything to go along with the gun...

To be fair, and i am speaking as a recommended transfer dealer for Buds (we show up ahead of others when you look for a local one on their site), we love transfer from them, however it is more then just 3 minutes of work.

When the gun comes in we have to log it in, make sure it is what it says and securely store it until its picked up. While its in our possession its got to be covered by our insurance, fire suppression and all that jazz too.

When the customer comes in they do the paperwork and we do our paperwork, NICS check and all that. Most of the time its all good, but many have to prove residency due to bad addresses on their drivers licenses, being permanent residents etc, which takes time and effort. Now we are almost entirely electronic so we provide the fastest possible service for our customers.

Dont get me wrong, we love transfers because we dont need to extend the hundreds of dollars for the purchase, hold inventory and all that, but i just wanted to point out its more then just a few minutes work that makes it happen. It is easy even for us to sit and see the $20 bill and think, cool its all profit, but in reality its not as pure as we like to think.

I would be happy to have 10+ a day, that would be a fantastic source of income that would remove a huge overhead factor and allow me to invest in other areas of the business.

Find another FFL - that guy's going to be a problem to deal with if he can't accept the notion of online sales. Remind him that he's lucky that the laws force people to do a transfer for online orders - otherwise he would be toast by now.

I have only used Bud's police supply but the deals where outstanding and fast service.
