Weird experience with Buds Gun Shop

Sorry about being a little late to post. I received a response from Bud's on Sunday, but was busy with stuff and didn't get around to posting it.

According to Bud's, they did contact my dealer, but it had nothing to do with me personally. They were interested in finding out if he wanted to become a preferred dealer. Though the person who responded to me was not the person who called.

*shrug*

I'll question my dealer some more. I doubt he wants to steer me away from online shopping, as transfers are probably 60-70% of all his business. And generally, he's a very nice, very friendly guy who's well known in the area. I don't believe he would make something like that up for financial gain. I can believe (and this is what I'm currently leaning towards) that he might've taken a few innocuous comments and read more into them than he should've. It makes sense that they would bring me, a repeat customer, up in a discussion about making him a preferred dealer.

In general, I think I over-reacted. My apologies to Buds and the people on here for raising empty alarms. Do you think it would make it fair if I concluded this thread with a glowing endorsement of Buds? :D Their prices have always been great, shipping fast, and their website is always up-to-date with whether an item is in stock or not -- and I hate, more than anything, when I'm told that an item listed as "in stock" is actually back-ordered with an expected delivery time of 4 months (which I've encountered a couple of times in my online shopping experiences)... I WILL buy from them again (and again and again).
Thanks for the update, nyrifleman. Although I'm somewhat skeptical of Bud's explanation based on your OP of the situation, I agree that moving on is the best course of action. I also am a big fan of Bud's and would rather not feel compelled to discard them based on a single "suspicious" exchange. However, I will file it away and watch for possible future posts of a similar experience.

You may want to simply close this thread and allow it do go away quietly. I don't remember for sure if we can do that on this forum but I'm sure that if we can't you can ask the mods to do it for you if you think that that is the appropriate course of action.

If they don't/didn't send the gun, it is their business. Just as long as you get your money back quick like a bunny. There are enough Interwebs gun dealers out there, find a new one, say good bye to Bud's and don't look back. Especially if you have dealt with them before and didn't seem to have a problem.

I don't believe it. What gun shop/FFL could possibly be a source of exaggerated stories and conspiracy theories?

I have NEVER met someone who worked in a gun shop that took liberties with the truth. They would never ignore the facts for the sake of a good story! ;)

"I've purchased from Buds before, and had a satisfactory experience.

My FFL dealer called me up Thursday to say it had arrived, and also proceeded to inform me that, apparently, Buds had called him before sending out the package to find out more about me. I am not pleased with the fact that they called at all."
So your first concern is that they called to check you out?
Shouldn't you be glad they want to make sure you aren't the local drug dealer?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Apparently, what they didn't like was my good Slavic name of "Yuri".
You have purchased from them before but they all of a sudden don't like the name Yuri

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Not to mention, in the words of my FFL dealer, "it's a bolt-action .22 for God's sake, not really the kind of weapon you'd be looking to turn to crime."
Unless you want to shoot the guy you don't like from maybe a block away???Don't forget that most criminals are criminals because they are too stupid to be employed in a regular job

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Unless I'm misreading the situation, if my FFL dealer hadn't answered as affirmatively as he had, Buds might not have sent me the gun. Which is their right, as the vendor, but not really reassuring to me as the customer.
Am I simply overreacting to this? Or do you think it's valid for me to be concerned?"
I'll go with overreacting, be glad that someone is looking out for public safety. Maybe, just maybe they have had to deal with some identity theft issues related to internet sales. Maybe they have a new policy. Maybe like you said they don't like the name Yuri. Maybe they recently had an issue with someone from your area and just wanted to be sure it wasn't the same guy using a different name. No matter what the reason is a public forum isn't where you should look for answers. If I were you I would call the vendor and inquire as to why they felt the need to call your local shop. Maybe then you can come back on here and let us know what happened.

Best regards

Now after reading all the replies I saee you did contact the vendor and post a reply (OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT) and a fine way to make my first post. I will go and kick myself in the rear end now.

Its none of their flippen business and your FFL should have told them as much, I'd be mad at him too.

Ridiculous. Not to be rude, but that sounds an awful lot like brady bunch logic.

It's none of their business. Literally.

You don't understand the laws and procedures related to the purchase and transfer of firearms very well do you?

I'll be nice because of your last paragraph!

Welcome aboard, stick around and you'll learn a lot!

"....looking out for public safety...." hmmm...sounds like the PatriotApp is needed to report suspicious behavior directly to Big Sis.

As a private business, Bud's can do whatever they want. If they don't like you, personally, they're not law-bound to sell to you. As a caveat, I live down the street from the retail Bud's store, and they sell allow range access to all sorts and kinds of people.

If this phone call did take place, I'm sure it was for a good reason. They really don't have time to waste, Every employee there is too busy to call a FFL without a good reason.

Actually I think there is noting to be concerned about. Too many links in the chain. It might just have been a newly employed operator / shipping guy that has an issue with names like "Yuri". It could have been that your dealer imbellished (sp?) a bit about the conversation, or was flat out messing with you since you have known each other for a while. It really should have no bearing on Buds or your dealer. It's too far down the chain to get a straight answer & now it has been bloated so much that no body will want to tell you the actual situation. I would let it slip right out my mind if I were you.

it wouldn't have anything to do with Bud's trying to protect themselves from Bloomberg's assault on out-of-state Gun Shops, would it? You did say that you are in NY.

A close friend works for Bud's here in Lexington.

FWIW, he said they are being especially cautious about shipping guns to certain jurisdictions because of the potential those sales raise of having to deal with a BATFE investigation labeling them as "gun runners."

Another friend who runs a shop in a neighboring county flatly refuses to ship anything to several areas, particularly California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and... well... you know the list by heart.

I asked him why (he sells tons of accessories, especially holsters, rail gear, etc.), and he said he didn't want the hassle.

"If the ATF ever asks, I can honestly say that I've never sold ANYTHING to New York, California, etc.

I understand his point of view. I'd do the same in his position.
