Buying ammo at Wallyworld!!!

"We went from "not a Rhodes scholar" to "mentally handicapped?" Wow. What a leap!"

You, just combined comments from two different people into one, sorry, but you can't do that. If a person can't differentiate betwen selling 10 boxes of ammo, or one case of ammo that contains 10 boxes, then yes, they are mentally challenged.

"You would have no problem with people you serve coming onto an internet community and insulting you? If I were to insult you, do you think you would take umbrage? I guarantee you would."

You don't seem to understand the difference between insulting a person on the internet without letting anyone know exactly who you are talking about, and actually naming a specific person in your insult. There is a big difference between saying "a stupid wal-mart employee did this" and "John Smith from wal-mart #2305 is a moron"

The first insult is simply letting out steam in an anonymous forum, the second is a personal insult to a specific person that you then name to everyone else.

"You're digressing. We're talking about the attitude of posts on this thread, NOT about confronting a misinformed Walmart employee."

Strange, I thought the posts in this thread were directed at misinformed wal-mart employees.

"Just exactly what do you do?"

I'm an Air Force weapons troop, working around bombs and aircraft.

"One has nothing to do with the other. Your initial insult had to do with them being mentally handicapped. That has nothing to do with "able bodied."

So you don't consider a mentally handicapped person to be NOT able-bodied?
Vice-versa, an able-bodied person is therefore not handicapped. Able-bodied doesn't just refer to physical ability, but mental as well. I would be glad to let a man in a wheelchair be a door greeter, but he sure wouldn't work in the stock room.

"The High Road is not a matter of convenience. It is when it is inconvenient that it becomes "The High Road."

I could have worded that better, but what I mean was, sometimes a thing that is necessary to do does not come across as "the high road" to others.
It is necessary to correct peoples mistakes, even if they sometimes take it as an insult.

I can't control how a person takes my comments, but I can then tell them that those comments were not meant with malice, only to help them improve. Constructive criticism isn't intended as an insult. It's all about the INTENT of the comments, not how they take them.

Odds are the counter person thought that you wanted a case quantity discount, which Wal-Mart does not offer. As for not wanting to go in the back and get you a case, if he or she already knows there are no cases in the back I don't imagine she would hop to it to waste her and your time to go look for something they knew wasn't there.

Also "Please go to the back and retreve me a case of the 100 round bulk pack 115gr Winchester White Box 9mm." is not the most polite way to address someone, why not just add "peon" or "peasant" to the end of the sentence. Next time just ask for ten boxes of the ammo you want.

I rather enjoy going in to WallyWorld and buying ammo.

"I would like some of your fine (cheap) ammunition. What's your price on Winchester White Box 100rd 9mm?"

"$11.87."

"OK. I'll take all you have, please."

(blink blink) "How many boxes, sir?"

"All you have."

...

"OK. I would like 15 boxes."

"We have 8."

"OK. Then I would like 8."

Sigh.

Just this week, I was in Walmart asking about what .22LR they carried. The guy says, "Well this stuff here is copper-plated, and this stuff over here is rimfire." It was kind of funny, but it was no big deal. I don't know about you guys, but I don't have a lot of expectations of the clerk and I certainly don't expect him to know anything about the product and that's ok with me. I assume that's just the department he's been assigned. No big deal. I expect him to ring it up and that's it. 10 boxes of 9mm...one case...whatever gets me out the door with 1000 rounds.

I actually went in Wal Mart today. I was comparison shopping on .22lr and looking for a cheap scope. After a few minutes at the counter writing down prices in my notebook, a very helpful and knowledgeable employee arrived. He answered all my questions with a smile. He was, without a doubt, the best Wal Mart worker I've ever met.

I just want to make two points.

First, every Walmart employee seems to quote state law without actually knowing what state law is let alone the differnce between law and store policy. Our local Walmarts have a no ammo after 9pm policy and I have heard the same thing others have said, that they quote it as being a state or federal law. I also had a 20yr old friend that tried to buy 9mm ammo. The clerk said he couldn't because he was under 21, my friend told him that would be correct if it was for a handgun but he said it was for a rifle. At this point the clerk continued to insist that it doesn't matter. My friend told him to just scan the upc cope and look at his monitor. After a little more arguing he did and saw the question "is it for a handgun or rifle". He pressed rifle and the sale went through only asking for proof of age over 18. My buddy gave him his ID and an ear to ear grin. At this point the clerk admited that he works automotive and was covering for the sporting goods guy that is on break and this was his first ammo sale.

The second point is in line with the story above. Often times individuals from other departments cover the sporting goods section and these individuals often don't admit things they don't know and also overtly assume things that are completely incorrect. There are also those sporting goods employs that assume based solely on their job that they know more than their average customer.

went in this morning and got 3 boxes of probably the same thing. clerk seemed kind of suprised I wanted 300 rnds of 9mm.

he rang it up and said "have a happy.. whatever"

Heh, heh....I had a similar thing happen when I went in to a Wally World in decidedly anti-gun PG County in MD. The clerk, a youngish guy, said in response to my request for 500 rounds of 9mm said, "What do you need all of that for?". I responded that in times of imminent emergency I wasn't at liberty to discuss it.

I wouldn't bang on Wally World too hard. I've had experiences over the years in a few guns shops that were pretty ridiculous too, and the clerks were a lot older. Plus they weren't selling in the garden shop or jewelery department the day before.

Maybe I left out some information the first time. I was still chuckling when I got home!!

The first thing I asked was if they offered a discount for bulk purchases.
This Walmart sells an unbelievable amount of ammunition!! The area I live in is rural Arizona. Just about everyone and his dog owns a gun!!! It's not unusual, at all, to see someone packing in the local store!! If there was not any more in the back, then I would have been surprised, not steamed!!! I thought it HUMOROUS that as long as it was not encased in a cardboard box, I could buy it!! I thought the whole thing was funny!! :D

As for asking the clerk to get me a case from the back, there was no insult intended any more than me asking a waitress, in a resturant, to get me another cup of coffee!! The clerk did her job well and I commend her for it!! She was not responsible for Wallyworld's silly rule!!! I did ask her if anyone else had ever bought this much ammo from her and she said NO!!

Am I going to stop buying ammo there?? Please re-read my original post!! It's a 20 min drive from my house. The price is better or at least comparable to what I can get by ordering the same product over the internet, once I add in shipping!!! Heck yeah!! I'm going to keep buying my ammo there!! I'll just take my own cardboard box with me the next time!!

And I'm sure they do have a "general" knowledge of the products with which they deal. But cut them some slack, ok? They make mistakes.
When someone gets hurt because they stuff the wrong ammo in the firearm they just bought from a Walmart clerk who told them that that ammo he just sold them would work just fine in the gun they just bought and it blows up in their face I suppose that that is perfectly OK because after all, those in the know who could have educated the clerk (even though it isn't their job) didn't because they were cutting the clerk some slack.

Walmart provides an excellent service to the general public by selling ammo at really good prices. The problem is (and this is really sad) not everyone has even a fundamental knowledge of firearms and ammunition. I have personally observed a Walmart clerk selling .380 to someone who asked for .38 Special and either didn't know the difference or wasn't paying attention when the clerk handed them the stuff. Hey .380 and 38 - same numbers must be the same stuff right? In that case I don't know if an injury would have resulted or not (IMO not) but what if they'd wanted .45ACP and gotten 45 GAP (problem???).

When you're selling stuff that can result in death or injury it is incumbent on the seller to make darn sure they give the buyer what they want. If the buyer asks for 45GAP and gets it and then gets injured firing it out of a 1911 then shame on the buyer. BUT! If the buyer asks for .45 ACP and the Walmart clerk hands 'em 45 GAP and guarantees it is the same thing or equivalent then shame on Walmart.

Walmart should make sure that the sporting goods clerks who sell ammo be trained well enough to know what the hell they're doing. Heck - maybe even pay'em 50 cents an hour more or something.

The onerous is on both Wal*Mart and the customer. The sales person is responsible to sell the correct ammo. The customer should know what type of ammo he or she requires for their gun. If the owner does not know, the question should he/she own such a weapon? A gun owner not familar with their gun may be in danger both to themselves and others.:uhoh:

The Wal-mart that Denfoote goes to is the same one i go to and is usally very good about helping/knowing something, there is a guy there that i talked to for about 10 min about 1911s and he told me he owns a Goldcup 1911:D
For my money i have been pleased with the help in Wal-mart.

Bying Ammo

I've by passed WW by reloading my 9mm and 40.cal. I'm retired and enjoy the pass time.

Easy, if you do not like the folks at Wal-Mart don't shop there.

When you are a cheapskate and put up with them at Wal-Mart don't complain about them. NO ONE CARES!

Suport you local gunshop.

Also in this rant if you want guns and ammo at wholesale Git your own FFL.

The 9mm and 40S&W was stacked pretty high a week or so ago at our local Walmart, went by today.. nada zip zilch... plenty of shotgun shells and skeet though.. missed out I guess..

More good reasons to not shop at wal-mart.
Only costs me 1 dollar more to buy plinking ammo at the local gunshop that has a range, lots of handguns I can handle, hosts idpa competitions, and does special orders, and the occasional nice used reloading press.

I don't like Wal-mart's practices, and I try to not send my money to china as regularly as I can.

I walk up to Wal-mart's sporting goods counter.....
After bending and squinting,I say...

"I would like a box of Remington Corelocks in 30/06..."
"Ok let me see.....uh.....hmmm...these ones?"
"Ah,no, their in a green and yellow box...."
"Oh,ok......these 'um?"
"No, to your left."
"Oh,I see,.......ahhhh....ahha...got'em."
"I'd like the 180 grain ones, if you don't mind."
"Ok.......ummm.....,,"
"Their right on top of the other ones..."
"Uhhh.....these ones?"
"Yep."
"You will have to pay for 'em back here or else ....they might....the rules...ya' know?"
"Really?I thought..Ok, I'll pay for here..."

I pay, look on as the clerk bags them twice, take 'um and leave.

Not to bad,right?

I guess if I did not like a retailer, I just would not shop there. That solves your problem. Oh, can you step aside sir, there are several customers waiting behind you. Thanks for shopping with us and have a nice day!:)
