Pardon my ignorance, but I know "C&R" stands for "Curio and Relic"...but what does that mean and what's the advantage in ordering? There appears to be a special C&R License...what's the importance of that? How does one get one!

It is a collectors class FFL (Federal Firearm License) that lets individuals purchase firearms over 50 years of age and firearms specifically classified as C&R firearms, from anyone in the US and have them shipped to your home.

Here is a great thing to read, starting out.

You will need to fill out and send a Form 7 CR to the BATFE.

Now, with a C&R license, you can "basically" (there are numerous rules, lists, and restrictions) buy firearms that are 50 years and older for almost wholesale from distributors. They get shipped straight to your address.

So, you'd mail the license off to place like http://www.aimsurplus.com/, http://www.centuryarms.com/, http://www.centerfiresystems.com/, http://www.southernohiogun.com/, etc.... then you get their catalogs and great prices.

You do have to log your C&R purchases in a "bound book".
And you can't make a business out of it.
And you can't let your significant other see the bank account after your first shopping spree. :D

One note of caution. Check local and state laws, especially on handguns and some "assault rifles" (not many are C&R, but some may be).

In Maryland, for example, the C&R category is not recognized and the collectors license is not recognized in any way. A collectors license holder ordering a handgun or "assault rifle" from out of state is violating state law. In fact, the dealer's FFL is not recognized for those guns; a separate state regulated firearms dealers license is the only valid license for dealing in them.

Our gun laws are bad BUT NOT THAT BAD (at least not yet). The only problem with C&R here is that certain dealers like CDNN won't ship handguns into Maryland because of the confusion with the handgun approved list, shell casing, and integrated lock laws (none of which apply to C&R firearms ). The only class of firearms acutally bared in Maryland are so called "assault pistols" such as the AA Arms AP-9; Bushmaster; Claridge HI-Tec; D-Max Industries; Encom Mk-IV, MP-9, and MP-45; H & K SP-89; Holmes MP83; Ingram MAC 10/11 and any variations, including Partisan Avenger and SWD Cobray; Intratec TEC-9 and DC-9 (centerfire only); P.A.W.S.; Skorpion; Spectre; Uzi; Weaver Arms "Nighthawk"; and Wilkinson Arms "Linda".
