I chose the bare minimum as a 9mm with 7-8 shot . I pick this as it is the same as my Sig P-6 surplus pistol that I carry when riding my 4 wheeler out in the woods and trails . It is the bare minimum that I would goto other than just having a mini .22 revolver in my front pocket when I am in church .
I figure that 9mm and 8 shots were good enough for the German police then its good enough for me when I cant take my high capacity pistol out and about .

A point I've often made is that a defensive weapon must be powerful enough to STOP AN ATTACK. Most people would give up their valuables to a BB gun or a sharp stick pointed at them. Certainly a .22; .25, 32 or .380 is enough gun if you're sticking somebody up. But if I need to shoot to defend myself or somebody else from an aggressive attack, I want at least a little more power than that. I had a Kel-Tec .380. Mine was reasonably accurate and completely reliable. Nothing carries more easily in a pocket AFAIC. I ended up getting rid of it only because I decided for myself not to rely on anything less powerful than a good .38. Nothing smaller or lighter than a airweight j-frame for me.

Your mileage may vary.

I own an LCP. I don't carry it. I trust the firearm, but I don't trust the .380 cartridge.

I own a Kahr PM9, and I carried it every day for three years...and would carry it again. I trust the gun and he cartridge...so I voted 9mm, 6-7 rounds minimum.

I own a Kahr P45, and carry it daily...now that I have learned to carry/conceal it, I am more confident with 6-7 rounds of .45 acp than 6-7 rounds of 9mm. I would prefer a 1911, but the weather and my modest stature make that a difficult proposition.

When the winter comes (such as it is in Texas) and I can wear a cover garment, I will once again revert to an N-frame in .41 Mag or .45LC, or any of a number of 1911s.
